We all are technology and vehicle <strong>en</strong>thusiasts!<br />
We live what we are doing. Acid tests such as the<br />
Tuareg rally in the desert of Morocco provide us<br />
with the opportunity of subjecting our products<br />
to a real field test.<br />
This year, ev<strong>en</strong> four teams of <strong>AVL</strong> <strong>DiTEST</strong> participated<br />
in the chall<strong>en</strong>ging Tuareg rally in order<br />
to test the <strong>AVL</strong> <strong>DiTEST</strong> diagnostics products<br />
for robustness, reliability, and user-fri<strong>en</strong>dliness<br />
under the most extreme conditions. Naturally,<br />
the teams brought several devices of the latest<br />
robust and mobile diagnostic tools “MDS Drive”<br />
including the innovative diagnostics software<br />
XDS 1000.<br />
Due to the extreme stress, one race kilometer<br />
corresponds to eight road kilometers. Immin<strong>en</strong>t<br />
failures or minor malfunctions must be detected<br />
quickly in order to be able to maintain the<br />
full performance of the vehicles under these<br />
extreme conditions. With a few clicks, for example,<br />
and in record time, an initial diagnostic<br />

by vehicle rollover and total failure of the <strong>en</strong>gine,<br />
were executed successfully thanks to <strong>AVL</strong><br />
<strong>DiTEST</strong> XDS 1000 and a huge team spirit.<br />

Four differ<strong>en</strong>t groups consisting of auto<br />
mechanics, vocational school teachers of<br />
the vehicle trade, trainees, as well as diagnostics<br />
experts have put 17 diagnostics<br />
devices of differ<strong>en</strong>t manufacturers to the<br />
acid test and assessed their functions,<br />
handling, and speed. In all groups, the <strong>AVL</strong><br />
<strong>DiTEST</strong> diagnostics device received the top<br />
grades in all disciplines. Conclusion: “One<br />
of the quickest diagnostics devices with<br />
the easiest operation in the market.”<br />
It’s all about the right information<br />
Thanks to the intellig<strong>en</strong>t assistants of the <strong>AVL</strong><br />
Di-TEST XDS 1000 software, selecting vehicles<br />
and establishing a connection to the vehicle<br />
interface are particularly easy. After having selected<br />
the vehicle, a compreh<strong>en</strong>sive description<br />
shows the connecting cables, real photos of the<br />
vehicle’s diagnostics interface, and additional<br />
instructions regarding the system properties of<br />
the vehicle.<br />
Particularly for state-of-the-art vehicles, this information<br />
should be tak<strong>en</strong> into consideration in<br />
order to avoid time-consuming erroneous operations,<br />
for example the use of the proper connecting<br />
cable for Opel and PSA vehicles.<br />

Going on holiday – with the caravan<br />
The holiday season is about the start! Quickly<br />
booking the low-budget flight southbound or<br />
rather sp<strong>en</strong>ding the holiday in the mountains<br />
or at the beach using vehicle and caravan? The<br />
workshops have their work cut out. Many customers<br />
are now retrofitting their vehicles with the<br />
corresponding tow-bar.<br />
However, what must be tak<strong>en</strong> into consideration<br />
regarding the vehicle’s control units programming?<br />
At this point at the latest, the expert<br />
differs from the layperson. For many state-ofthe-art<br />
vehicles, several control units must be<br />
re-programmed within the vehicle after the tow<br />
–bar was installed:<br />
• The c<strong>en</strong>tral gateway must be informed<br />
about the fact that an additional tow-bar control<br />
unit was integrated into the vehicle’s network.<br />
• The brake electronics and/or the ESP must<br />

It’s all about the right respiration<br />
An <strong>en</strong>gine will only be able to unfold its maximum<br />
performance if it is able to breathe properly.<br />
The air filter for the <strong>en</strong>gine <strong>en</strong>sures that the<br />
sucked-in air is cleaned from any dirt and dust.<br />
In the ev<strong>en</strong>t of a dirty or clogged air filter, the<br />
<strong>en</strong>gine is provided with insuffici<strong>en</strong>t amounts of<br />
air resulting in poor <strong>en</strong>gine performance and<br />
increased fuel consumption. Therefore, the air<br />
filter should be replaced at regular intervals, but<br />
latest during regular vehicle service..<br />
For some vehicles, especially Mercedes B<strong>en</strong>z<br />
vehicles, the air filter teaching values must be<br />
reset in the <strong>en</strong>gine control system after having<br />
replaced the air filter. If this is not conducted,<br />
the <strong>en</strong>gine may switch to emerg<strong>en</strong>cy operation<br />
after a while, because the air volume increases<br />
and the control unit detects an error. Furthermore,<br />
resetting the air filter teaching values<br />
during service is absolutely necessary for some<br />
models, because the <strong>en</strong>tire service cannot be<br />
reset otherwise.<br />

take into account the additional caravan during<br />
stabilization and stabilize the vehicle/caravan<br />
combination as a whole.<br />
• The parking assist system and <strong>en</strong>gine and/<br />
or cruise control systems must take into account<br />
caravan operation and must adapt the speed<br />
and/or distances to other vehicles.<br />

Today, the ECU diagnostics is part of the daily<br />
routine of the commercial vehicle expert as the<br />
bolts are part of the tow-bar . State-of-the-art<br />
commercial vehicles, wh<strong>en</strong> fully equipped, contain<br />
more than 20 differ<strong>en</strong>t control units. In this,<br />
the diagnostics device is an indisp<strong>en</strong>sable aid<br />
for reading out the error memories and control<br />
unit parameters, as well as for carrying out service,<br />
maint<strong>en</strong>ance, and repair work.<br />
A constantly recurring<br />
practical application is<br />
the process of teaching<br />
the position s<strong>en</strong>sors of<br />
the electronically controlled<br />
air susp<strong>en</strong>sion<br />
(ECAS), which cannot be carried out properly<br />
without diagnostics device. Today’s commercial<br />
vehicles and trailers are nearly all equipped with<br />
air susp<strong>en</strong>sion systems.<br />
Electronic air susp<strong>en</strong>sion systems mainly consist<br />
of the control unit, the position s<strong>en</strong>sors, sol<strong>en</strong>oid<br />
valves, and possibly of an external control<br />
module. The control unit actuates the sol<strong>en</strong>oid<br />
valves and varies the height of the air susp<strong>en</strong>sion<br />
with the help of the measuring values of<br />
the position s<strong>en</strong>sors. The advantage of the air<br />
susp<strong>en</strong>sion systems is obvious: the pressure of<br />
the susp<strong>en</strong>sion bags can be varied dep<strong>en</strong>ding<br />
on the load so that the height betwe<strong>en</strong> roadway<br />
and vehicle superstructure will remain the same<br />
at all times.<br />
EVERYTHING BLUE or what?<br />
Giv<strong>en</strong> the more string<strong>en</strong>t<br />
emission standards<br />
Euro V (since<br />
2008) and later also<br />
Euro VI (as of 2<strong>01</strong>3), the<br />
commercial vehicle manufacturers<br />
have switched the majority of their<br />
vehicles to state-of-the-art SCR technology<br />
(Selective Catalytic Reduction) in order to gain<br />
control of the emission of harmful nitric oxides<br />
(NOx). SCR converts the nitric oxides to harmless<br />
nitrog<strong>en</strong> and water by means of a chemical<br />
process. For the chemical process,<br />
an additional liquid must be injected<br />
into the emissions.<br />
The brand name for this liquid<br />
is “AdBlue”. It consists of a 32.5%<br />
urea-water solution and is clear as water,<br />
contrary to the brand name.<br />
In g<strong>en</strong>eral, commercial vehicles with SCR and<br />
AdBlue can be id<strong>en</strong>tified immediately giv<strong>en</strong> the<br />
blue tank and the tank cover directly next to the<br />
actual diesel tank in order to avoid confusions.<br />
The <strong>en</strong>tire SCR system predominantly<br />
consists of tank, pump, filter,<br />
lines, injector, and the control<br />
unit. Since the SCR is an emission-relevant<br />
system, it is monitored<br />
painstakingly accurately by<br />
the control unit. Any malfunction is<br />
punished with up to 40% reduced <strong>en</strong>gine<br />

Traveling comfort, driving characteristics, loading<br />
height, headlight settings, etc. remain constant<br />
this way.<br />
Wh<strong>en</strong> making any changes to the superstructure<br />
and wh<strong>en</strong> repairing and replacing faulty<br />
position s<strong>en</strong>sors, these must be taught anew so<br />
that the control unit is<br />
able to save the proper<br />
data for the chassis<br />
height. Using the <strong>AVL</strong><br />
<strong>DiTEST</strong> XDS 1000 diagnostics<br />
software, the<br />
process of teaching<br />
the position s<strong>en</strong>sors is as easy as nowhere else:<br />
(1) initially, select the vehicle, th<strong>en</strong> (2) execute<br />
an automatic scan, and (3) select the function<br />
for teaching the position s<strong>en</strong>sors and/or level<br />
calibration.<br />
The diagnostics software will th<strong>en</strong> guide the<br />
user through the teaching sequ<strong>en</strong>ce in a stepby-step<br />
manner. After having successfully completed<br />
the teaching procedure, all error memories<br />
should be deleted by clicking “Delete all<br />
errors”.<br />
performance (emerg<strong>en</strong>cy operation), which can<br />
only be remedied by repair or maint<strong>en</strong>ance and<br />
by using a diagnostics device.<br />
At this point, the statistically most frequ<strong>en</strong>t defect<br />
refers to the AdBlue pump mostly failing<br />
on the basis of erroneous refueling, e.g. diesel<br />
fuel. The diesel causes a polymer ball within the<br />
system to swell up and a valve to stop v<strong>en</strong>tilation<br />
and/or bleeding, which will result in a faulty<br />
pump. Furthermore, clogged metering units<br />
may occur every now and again. In the ev<strong>en</strong>t of<br />
defect, replacem<strong>en</strong>t, or obstruction, the system<br />
must be cleaned and purged with water in order<br />
that foreign matter or the crystallized AdBlue<br />
are dissolved again.<br />
The processes of repairing and cleaning the SCR<br />
system are particularly easy wh<strong>en</strong> using the <strong>AVL</strong><br />
<strong>DiTEST</strong> XDS 1000 software.<br />
All important functions regarding the control of<br />
the dosing unit, the inspection of the pump, or<br />
the control of the valves for pressure build-up<br />
and/or pressure reduction are available with<br />
one click upon completion of the automatic<br />
scan.<br />
