The design of the ATMOS S 61 Servant 

ENT workstation makes your patients feel 

comfortable in your practice. All the technical 

equipment is well hidden behind an appealing 

housing – however, all important functions and 

handles are perfectly arranged and provide 

ergonomic working conditions. Regarding 

colouring you may choose between more than 

200 colours, so the system can be tailored to 

match your existing examination room. 

Depending on the requirements, it is possible 

to optionally upgrade the different modules, in 

order for you to adapt your workflow according 

to the increased patient through-put (automatic 

rinsing, instrument warming, and further 

modules from the ATMOS S 61 Servant line). 

This saves time and money. 

You can configure your treatment system by 

selecting function modules for the treatments 

you wish to carry out. After your initial system 

has been purchased, it is possible to upgrade 

the functionality of your unit if required. 

This can be performed on site by an ATMOS 

engineer so allows you to adapt your system to 

meet your changing clinic requirements.

When the suction hose is removed, 

from the docking station the suction will 

be automatically activated. Miniaturized 

light barriers control most part of the 

basic functions of the ATMOS S 61 

ENT workstation. Time is therefore used 

more efficiently with the removal of 

manual switching of the light source. 

DDS secretion container 

Thanks to the Direct Docking System 

(DDS) it is possible to exchange the 

secretion container with one pull. The 

bacterial filter prevents you from bad 

odours in the surroundings of the 

treatment unit and the inner workings 

from contamination.

Radiofrequency surgery 

in the ENT practice 

The ATMOS S 61 Servant Therapy module 

is particularly suitable for integrating a 

radiofrequency surgical device into the 

ENT workstation. 

The radiofrequency surgical device 

ATMOS RS 221 ENT can optionally be 

integrated in a drawer. When the drawer is 

opened, all important control elements and 

handles with electrodes are at hand and are 

ready for use. The innovative radiofrequency 

technology is suitable for haemostasis 

(coagulation) as well as for the perfect cutting 

of tissue with less scarring (nasal concha). 

Radiofrequency surgery with bipolar electrodes 

is used in snore therapy (uvulopalatoplasty). 

Safety has priority 

The ATMOS SE 6501 Smoke Evacuation 

System module can be integrated within the 

ATMOS S 61 Servant therapy so that it can 

be easily accessed when suction of infectious 

aerosols is required.

Mirror pre-heating 

The heated mirror magazine has 

space for approx. 70 mirrors (size 

K2 to K7). In order to prevent 

the mirrors from fogging the 

magazine is pre-heated to body 

temperature (38°C). 

Deposit for used instruments 

After use on the patient you would 

like to quickly remove instruments 

from your working area and have 

them disinfected. The bowl for 

used instruments is spacious and 

readily accessible. It is integrated 

in a drawer and is therefore easy 

to exchange, but at the same time 

it is well hidden and not visible for 

the patient. 

In case you prefer to deposit the 

used instruments in disinfectant 

solution you will appreciate the 

covered bowl made of plastic. 

On request all parts which may 

become splashed are available in 

stainless steel.

professional), or if available you can use the central vacuum supply in your

During the examination with scopes you want to concentrate on your 

patient. The ATMOS S 61 Servant vision offers the perfect solution for 

endoscope handling: 

If required, clean endoscopes can be stored in a heated quiver. When 

removing from the quiver the relevant light source is switched on 

automatically. After examination the scope can be deposited in a second 

quiver which can be filled with disinfectant solution. In case you would 

like to store the scope in the disinfectant solution for a defined period of 

time, a LED indication showing the desired disinfection time is optionally

With the new ATMOS radiofrequency therapy for ENT applications a new 

generation of electrosurgical devices is now available for 

ENT medicine. Especially for the following fields of application 

radiofrequency surgery is advantageous: 

n Immediate haemostasis by coagulation. 

n Very slight tissue damage of the surrounding tissue in the field of tonsil 

surgery. 

n Minimal bleeding

Frequently asked 

questions on the smoke 

evacuation problem 

1. Is normal operating theatre ventilation adequate for 

evacuating smoke? 

No, the rate of air circulation in the room - up to 

24 x volume/hour - is not sufficient to evacuate locally 

generated aerosols and gases; the user is still exposed to 

dangerous laser smoke. 

2. So a normal room suction system (a central vacuum) 

is not good enough? 

No, the rate of room suction in an operating theatre is too 

low, at 30-40 l/min. Research has shown that a minimum 

of 400-600 l/min. is required in the operating field. 

3. How great is the risk of becoming infected from 

biological substances during an operation? 

Research is currently being undertaken to ascertain the 

degree of danger that exists from using different lasers 

and electrosurgical instruments. It has been proven that 

infectious particles can reach theatre staff and thereby 

create an acute risk of infection via the mucous 

membranes and respiratory tracts. 

4. So are the particles generated during an operation 

really dangerous? 

Airborne viruses such as papilloma viruses, proteins such 

as prions (BSE pathogens) and other airborne bacteria 

and funghi are dangerous substances that can lead to 

direct infection. 

5. Do surgical face masks help protect the operating 

staff? 

No, surgical face masks offer theatre staff no protection 

against airborne particles. These masks were designed 

to protect patients from droplet infections emanating 

from the operating team. 

Up to 25 % of air breathed in gets past the mask. 

6. Are there other reasons for carrying out localised 

smoke evacuation, apart from the risk of infection? 

The use of local smoke evacuation, when carried out 

during endoscopies, minimally invasive surgery and 

partially open and closed body cavities, gives optimum 

visibility.

7. How do doctors react to smoke evacuation devices? 

Smoke evacuation enjoys a high level of acceptance 

among medics, as they no longer have to contend with 

an obscured view of the surgical site. 

8. What effects do particles and gases have on 

the patient? 

During laparoscopies in particular, toxic gases diffuse into 

the patient‘s bloodstream. Small airborne particles in this 

smoke (measuring from 0.1 to 0.5 µm) cause ocular 

and upper respiratory tract irritation. 

9. Is there a risk to the patient? 

Medical staff should be aware of the risks to the patient 

from laser use and diathermic smoke generation during 

an operation. Some of the smoke inside a closed 

abdominal cavity can lead to an increase in 

methaemoglobin content, which reduces the capacity of 

body tissue to absorb oxygen. 

10. Does the suction device have to be operated 

separately? 

No, the suction device runs in the background; assistant 

theatre staff do not need to devote any resources to 

operating it. The smoke evacuation unit is activated 

automatically when needed. 

11. How high are the running costs of local smoke 

evacuation? 

The operating costs of the filter system are less than 

1 Euro per surgical procedure and the filter unit has a 

life of up to 52 hours, depending on flow. 

12. Do lasers deactivate dangerous airborne viruses? 

No, research on retroviruses has shown that infectious 

viruses and constituents of virus DNA are carried in laser 

smoke. So it is possible to be infected, for example, 

by papilloma viruses in the laser smoke.
