“No one else is being let into the
bar!” A police offi cer, at E.P. Taylor’s
Halloween pub night yelled
across the lineup that stretched
all the way down the sidewalk and
almost around the building, yet no
one seemed to be getting the message.
“Th ere was a lineup at 8:30,”
said Scott Toole, Student Association
events programmer.
“Th is is by far the craziest pub
night there has ever been.”
Th e crowd grew more aggravated
and hostile by the second, and
began chanting to let them in.
“It’s ridiculous, but everyone
out here is just trying to have a
good time, so kudos to them,” said
Steve Bourget, a fi rst-year Fitness
and Health Promotion student at
Durham College.
Sara Fransky, a second-year Bi-
ological Sciences student at UOIT,
said, “It sucks that we have to wait
in line so long and I sure hope it’s
worth it.”
For many students the long
wait ended only in disappointment,
as about 600 students who
were ready to party were turned
away from the event, and students
who were lucky enough to make
it in said it wasn’t even worth the
wait.
“It’s pretty good, not the greatest,”
said Luke Vandenkroonenberg,
a fi rst-year Music Business
Management student at Durham
College, who arrived at 9:30. “I
hopped the line, otherwise it
wouldn’t have been worth it.”
Brandon Alexander, manager
of E.P. Taylor’s, said there were
400 people inside and another
100 people could fi t, however
authorities wouldn’t allow it and
they stopped letting people in at
around 11 p.m.
“Th e bar didn’t expect this num-
ber of patrons that were supposed
to get in,” said Sergeant Haskins, of
Durham Regional Police, who estimated
1,000 people showed up at
the event.
“Th e purpose for us to be here
is crowd management. We didn’t
make the decision to shut the bar
down,” said Haskins. “We haven’t
had to intervene at all.”
Nick Verona, an Oshawa-based
musician dressed as Mr. Incredible,
was not impressed by the
lineup or the event.
“It’s bad. No fun, bad music. Th e
only thing that is making this happen
is the beer,” said Verona.
Paul Wade, Chad Deighton
and Ivana Muic had something to
smile about, despite the madness
outside: cash prizes for best costumes.
Wade received $200 and a bar
fridge for fi rst prize as Hulk Hogan,
Deighton took home $100 dressed
at Barney, and Muic came in third,
winning $50 as Wonder Woman.
