Lords defeat Georgian 3-0
By Chris Jones
Chronicle Staff
Th e Lady Lords volleyball team
started their season Oct. 25, and
what a game.
Th ey beat the Georgian Grizzlies
three sets to none on home
ground.
As the girls were warming up to
the remix of Crazy Train by LiL Jon
featuring Trick Daddy and Twista,
spectators began to fi ll the stands.
Once the whistle went off to
begin the game, the Lady Lords
showed no mercy, taking a quick
9-4 lead.
Good serving by Cheryl Silva
kept the ladies up the fi rst set.
However, later in the set the Grizzlies
found some momentum, to
make the score 22-16.
After that, they served into the
net to give the Lords the ball back.
Th e two teams continued to
rally back and forth until the Lords
stepped up their game to take the
fi rst set 25-21.
Th e second set was a little different.
After a small Lords rally,
they found themselves up 9-7.
Th e Grizz battled their way
back to tie the game at 9, but a nice
block by Amanda Doris sparked
their off ence. Th ey went on a fi vepoint
rally and found themselves
ahead 14-9.
Th e rest of the set, these two
teams found themselves dead even
going down to the fi nal serves. Th e
Lords found themselves tied at 24.
Stan Marchut, Durham College
hall of famer coach, decided to call
a timeout to calm his girls down.
“Th ey weren’t passing well, we got
to get the ball all around the court,”
he said.
But it was the inspiring words
of associate coach Jessica Powell
that sparked the girls.
“I asked them what kind of team
did they want to be,” she said.
Apparently they wanted to be a
good team. Th ey came back to win
the set 26-24.
Th e Lady Lords kept the momentum
in the third to take the set
25-19 and the sweep.
Karlene Risebrough Barnes
led the Lords off ensively with 11
kills and two aces. Silva ended the
game with six kills, fi ve aces, and
two blocks.
Powell thinks her team looked
good, but they still need some
work.
“We are optimistic about the
upcoming season,” she said.
“We just have to keep up the offence.”
On Nov. 2-3, the Lady Lords
played in a tournament at Humber
College. Th ey don’t have another
home game until Nov. 13 against
the Redeemer Royals.
Th e season is now over for the
Durham men’s soccer team but
three of its players were given recognition
by the OCAA.
Fabrice Kabongo was named
top goaltender in the east region.
He fi nished the season with four
shutouts and the best goals against
average in the west.
Last year’s all-Canadian defenceman
Trevor Delpippo was
named a league all-star.
“Our all-Canadian Trevor impressed
me all season, especially
in the playoff game against Fanshawe,”
said head coach Stan
Bombino. “He showed his true grit
in that game.”
Rashid Koriya, the Lords midfi
elder, was also named to the
league all-star team.
sisters get
fi rst points
this year
Th e UOIT women’s tennis team
has fi nished its second season,
showing steady signs of improvement
over last year.
Two of the women, Bianca
Savarino-Easter and her sister Giannetta
Savarino, won their doubles
match and both their singles
matches against the Waterloo
Warriors to capture the team’s fi rst
points of the season.
“Th e fi rst year was a rough
one,” said Kane Easter, assistant
varsity coach. “We showed some
improvement this year but failed
to win any overall matches against
the seven universities we played.”
Bianca Savarino-Easter was
pleased with her play this season
after a couple of year’s layoff from
University tennis.
“I haven’t played in a couple
years so I just wanted to go out and
compete,” said Savarino-Easter.
“I wasn’t expecting a lot because
I was playing against women
that have been playing at this level
for years. I won’t be returning next
season but I was satisfi ed with my
performance.”
Dawn O’Brien showed the most
improvement this season and impressed
her coaches with her work
ethic.
Th e Lady Lords of volleyball
went into Seneca with a
positive mind, and shut out
the Sting three sets to none,
capturing their second win of
the season and their second
shutout.
It took the ladies a bit to get
into the game, but Amanda
Doris stepped up her game.
“Amanda played sensational
in the centre position,”
said Charlene Risebrough
Barnes. “But our passing was
still weak in the fi rst set.”
Th e passing may have not
been 100 per cent, but they
still took the set 25-18.
Th eir passing improved in
the second set, which they
won 25-14.
“We focused more on our
passing in the second set,”
Barnes said.
Th e third set was a little
diff erent. Th ey were losing,
but their off ence turned the
momentum around and they
took the set 25-23.
for sure,” said Easter.
“She put in a lot of work over
the off -season and she really wanted
to get better. Every one of her
matches was competitive.”
For next season the coaches
are hoping to continue to improve
and they want to win one of their
overall matches against the other
schools.
“I feel that we can go out and
get a win next year,” said Easter.
“We will be losing three of our
top women but we will get better
through recruiting.”
Now that UOIT has been established,
the word is spreading
through the GTA that a university
is in Oshawa.
“We want to attract more players
here and I think the word
is spreading around about the
school,” Easter said.
“UOIT is so new that we expected
it to take some time and go
through the growing pains.”
