German-born Siegfried<br />
bettman begins<br />
manufacturing Triumph<br />
motorcycles (a name<br />
chosen to sound british<br />
and to be <strong>co</strong>mprehensible<br />
across Europe) at Much<br />
Park Street, Coventry with<br />
the assistance of Chief<br />
Engineer Maurice Schulte,<br />
whose expertise was behind<br />
the very first Triumph<br />
motorcycle, a 2.5HP,<br />
240cc model.<br />
determined to prove the<br />
reliability and speed of its<br />
products, Triumph steps<br />
up its <strong>co</strong>mmitment to the<br />
Isle of Man TT. In the 1908<br />
single cylinder class,<br />
jack Marshall wins on a<br />
Triumph 476cc with a<br />
fastest lap of 42.48mph.<br />
This was the first victory of<br />
a motorcycle with its frame<br />
and engine built by a<br />
single manufacturer.<br />
More than 30,000 Triumph<br />
Type H singles were built<br />
at a se<strong>co</strong>nd manufacturing<br />
facility, Coventry’s Priory<br />
Street, for the Allies in<br />
world war One. The bike<br />
was so reliable that dispatch<br />
riders affectionately referred<br />
to it as the ‘Trusty Triumph’.<br />
The first Triumph car made<br />
its debut in 1923. Costing<br />
£200, it featured a 1.4 litre<br />
engine designed by Harry<br />
Ricardo. En<strong>co</strong>uraged by this<br />
success, Ricardo went on to<br />
design several bike engines.<br />
Two new models appeared<br />
during this period: the LS,<br />
a 350cc side valve and<br />
the Type P, a 500cc side<br />
valve single.<br />
ALL OVER THE WORLD<br />

reaching 30,000 machines<br />
by the end of the decade,<br />
british motorcycle<br />
registrations set a re<strong>co</strong>rd<br />
that would stand for twenty<br />
years. The 1929 crash<br />
necessitated a new strategy<br />

resulted in 18 new models<br />
