Why Use Fluoropolymers?
Most of the useful properties of fluoropolymers are due to fluorine, the most electro-negative element
and the most reactive non-metal. Its atomic radius is the smallest next to hydrogen, and it forms
extremely strong bonds with other elements. When reacted with carbon in fluoropolymers, the
extremely strong, tight bond produces an extraordinary combination of properties.
Extraordinary Properties
• Chemically inert • Nontoxic
• Nonwetting • Nonstick
• Low Coefficient of Friction • Highly fire resistant
• Low dielectric constant • High temperature ratings
Solving Problems and Reducing Cost
This unrivalled combination of properties frequently makes fluoropolymers the product of choice when metals
and less expensive plastics fail or where long term reliability is required. Fluoropolymers are often used to
solve existing problems or to develop new technology. Despite a relatively high cost, fluoropolymers have
frequently been used to substantially reduce overall system cost.
In many cases, fluoropolymers provide solutions when nothing else works. For example:
• Fluoropolymer insulated plenum wiring eliminates the need for expensive metal conduit.
• Fluoropolymer insulated wire reduces weight in airplane wiring.
• Fluoropolymer lined industrial equipment has substantially lengthened equipment life.
Diverse Uses
Fluoroproducts are used in virtually every manufacturing industry and in many service industries. They are
woven into our way of life from PTFE coated frying pans and oil additives to fabric-covered sports stadiums,
computer hook-up wire, aircraft wire, fire alarm wire, under-hood car wire, down-hole oil well wire, plus seals
and bearings for valves, pumps, and other industrial equipment. New needs and applications are constantly
being uncovered.
KEY INDUSTRY NOTES:
1 Metals Coil coating Why Coat? – Fluoropolymer coatings can transform any metallic surface to those of a fluoropolymer.
2 Rubbers Continuous belt Product Types – By altering the binder (adhesive) resin, cures can be designed that will not harm
3 Plastics Ceramic coating temperature sensitive substrates, including plastics, wood, and even paper.
4 Ceramics Dispersion coating Product Size –Tiny valve seats to 50 ft. long rocket casings can be successfully coated.
5 Dip spin coating Thousands of small fasteners can be coated at once using dip‐spin techniques.
6 Extrusion coating Custom Coaters are located throughout the US, who can do from one to millions of parts as the
7 Electrostatic powder application demands. Freight costs tend to limit the trading area.
8 Flame coating Coatings – The market tends to be served by about 50 formulae, but hundreds of materials are
9 Fluidized bed commercially available for special applications.
10 Tumble coating The Process consists of Cleaning, Coating, and Curing. The choice of how to do each is governed by the
11 Electrostatic liquid needs of the specific application and may vary widely.
World's largest supplier of contract electron beam irradiation of PTFE scrap or offspec
virgin materials. After irradiation, PTFE can be micronized into a fine powder.
Micronized PTFE is used as an additive in inks, coatings, lubricants, and
thermoplastics to improve rub resistance, lubrication and other properties.
PVDF, ETFE, and ECTFE are often crosslinked by electron beam irradiation to
improve the physical properties of tubing, wire jacketing, and molded parts.
For over 45 years, Enflo has been a processor of PTFE resins into basic shapes.
These include: molded sheets, skived film up to 72” wide, slit tapes, extruded rods,
molded rods, extruded tubing, molded cylinders, & custom-fabricated parts.
Pressure sensitive & etching upon request. Available in virgin reprocessed &
Enflon®-filled PTFE. Enflo Corporation services U.S. customers while Enflo
Canada Ltd. services Canada and international.
Processor of PTFE basic shapes and custom-engineered profiles, guiderails,
wearstrips, and machined parts. Surf Chemical is part of an American
manufacturing organization that produces the widest variety and sizes of PTFE
basic shapes in North America (plate, sheet, tape, rod, tubing, profiles, mechanical
grade PTFE, glass-filled PTFE and specialty compound filled PTFE).
SPI Fluoropolymers Division
Founded in 1937, The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) represents 1,300 members covering the
entire plastics industry supply chain, including processors, machinery and equipment manufacturers and raw
materials suppliers. The U.S. plastics industry employs 1.3 million workers and provides $345 billion in annual
About FPD
The Fluoropolymers Division (FPD) of SPI was formed in 1956 to promote the growth and advance the
interests of the Fluoropolymers Industry. Its goal is to assist members in a collective effort to promote the
benefits and use of Fluoropolymers, to provide a common voice to address important industry issues, and to
ensure a healthy and vibrant industry. Its members − suppliers/distributors, fabricators, equipment suppliers,
and consultants − include the industry leaders and major international companies. FPD’s key objectives are to:
• Promote the use of fluoropolymers in new applications and markets worldwide.
• Address worldwide technical, legislative, regulatory and business issues related to fluoropolymers.
• Provide a forum for the exchange of information among member companies, academics, the scientific
community, and end-users.
• Gain a better understanding of the global marketplace opportunities for fluoropolymers.
Why join SPI/FPD? What are my benefits?
• SPI/FPD can protect your company and the industry against inappropriate legislation and regulation
• SPI/FPD keeps you informed and provides a forum on state and federal legislative and regulatory
matters, as well as industry trends and issues.
• Three active FPD Sections tailored to your particular industry needs. Each of these sections provides a
forum for the exchange of information among member companies and addresses worldwide technical,
legislative, regulatory and business issues related the processing of fluoropolymers
Custom Coaters Section – www.customcoatings.org
Processors Section – www.ptefparts.org
Wire & Cable Section – www.datacable.org
• Bi-annual conferences to discuss mutual interests and meet peers, suppliers, customers, and industry
consultants. Both meetings focus on critical business issues and include professional speakers,
including end-users and the scientific community, who provide insights on business and personal
improvement and industry updates on new materials, processes and developments.
posted on the main FPD web site, www.fluoropolymers.org.
• SPI FluoroGuide is a comprehensive FPD Buyers Guide, which is posted on our FPD main web site.
Who can join?
To join the Fluoropolymers Division, a company must be an SPI member, be an active fluoropolymer
processor, equipment or materials supplier to companies that process fluoropolymers, or a consultant, and
