Travel Health
By Louisa Lammers
Travelling is great fun but
two major factors can
impact on your health:
the actual travel (long haul
flights can be very taxing on
the body) and also coping
with a new environment when
you reach your destination.
Being seated and inactive
for long periods on long
haul flights is a risk factor
for developing the serious
condition of Deep Vein
Thrombosis (DVT) which is
blood clots in the legs. Moving
about and doing exercises,
including foot pumps and ankle
circles can help, but for those
at extra risk using compression
stockings is a must.
Air pressure changes with
flights can cause discomfort
in the ears and sinuses, so
using nasal sprays with a
decongestant can help open
up the ear and nasal passages.
Alternatively relief can be
found with a product called
Ear Planes. Chewing and
yawning during the take-off
and landing can also help.
Anyone who travels has a
50 percent chance of suffering
from a travel-related illness
with the dreaded traveller’s
diarrhoea (TD) being the most
common. This can involve
tummy cramps, nausea, fever,
vomiting and diarrhoea.
To avoid TD, use bottled
water or purifying tablets and
don’t have ice in drinks. Wash
hands regularly, use hand
sanitisers such as Aquim Gel
and avoid eating any foods
that have not been thoroughly
cooked.
If you still get TD, use an
oral rehydration therapy such
as Hydralyte which comes
in easy to mix sachets. If
symptoms persist beyond 48
hours an anti-diarrhoea tablet
like Imodium or Lomotil may
be useful. Taking a probiotic
like Ethical Nutrient’s Travel
Bug will boost immunity and
help to prevent TD.
By taking these simple
precautions, you can relax and
enjoy your fantastic holiday.
Happy travels!
