2 Characteristics<br />

2.1 Uses<br />

The linearly polarized Log-Periodic Antenna HL033 (see Fig. 5 and Fig. 6) provides general broadband<br />

transmission and reception in the frequency range from 80 MHz to 2000 MHz.<br />

Especially in connection with a test receiver or a monitoring receiver, the <strong>antenna</strong> is suitable for a variety<br />

of reception tasks; i.e. the direction of incidence and the polarization plane of electromagnetic waves as<br />

well as the field strength can be determined. The advantage of <strong>log</strong>-<strong>per</strong>iodic <strong>antenna</strong>s is that they are<br />

mainly frequency-independent of base impedance and radiation pattern. Very wide frequency ranges<br />

(>20:1) can therefore be covered by means of just one <strong>antenna</strong>. In combination with a test receiver, the<br />

<strong>antenna</strong> is ideal for field-strength measurements. The <strong>antenna</strong>-specific k factor required can be<br />

obtained from the CD-ROM (which is supplied with the <strong>antenna</strong>) since every <strong>antenna</strong> is calibrated. For<br />

a typical curve, see the annex (see Fig. 9).<br />

Note:<br />

Free-space <strong>antenna</strong> factors are to be used both for field-strength measurements to CISPR and VDE at<br />

a measurement distance of 10 m and 30 m and for usable field-strength measurements (e.g. to CCIR).<br />

In case of field-strength measurements, the reference point for setting the distance of the DUT is the<br />

center between the longest and the shortest radiator.<br />

The HL033 can also be used as a transmitting <strong>antenna</strong>. The max. transmit power is frequencydependent.<br />

For more detailed information, see Specifications (section 2.3).<br />

2.2 O<strong>per</strong>ation and Design<br />

The <strong>log</strong>-<strong>per</strong>iodic dipole principle was selected to obtain an extreme broadband characteristic of 1:25.<br />

The feed-line of the dipoles is at the same time the <strong>antenna</strong> supporting structure. This setup has the<br />

following advantages:<br />

• Low frequency-dependence of radiation patterns and input impedance.<br />

• Owing to the optional central holding device of the <strong>antenna</strong>, the <strong>antenna</strong> can also be set up at<br />

exposed locations.<br />

• All metallic parts are electrically connected to the mast flange and thus offer high protection against<br />

electrostatic charges and lightning strokes.<br />

• Good resistance to atmospheric conditions is ensured by using materials such as plastic,<br />

aluminium and stainless steel.<br />

• The balance and the good front-to-back ratio of the <strong>antenna</strong> patterns allow the direction of an<br />

incident signal to be roughly determined.<br />

• Use as a transmitting <strong>antenna</strong>.<br />
