bout the time you read
this, it will be some 90
days before christmas!
Where did the summer go? Already,
Halloween candy and thanksgiving
harvest wares are being moved aside
for the holidays. the merchants are
certainly hoping for a brisk holiday
shopping season. so are we!
And, of course, there
is ‘Grosse Pointe’ — the
neighborhoods, the
churches, the homes, the
institutions and the lake —
that make living here feel
so ‘right.’

yet, let’s not forget to enjoy
Halloween and thanksgiving along
the way to the big day, Dec. 25.
All Hallows eve is a good holiday
in that there is little pressure — other
than finding or making the right
costume for your little goblins and
witches and whatnot.
on the farm, we had to travel into
town to go trick-or-treating. With the
nearest home 1/2 mile away, trick-ortreating
in the country was not very
profitable.
sometimes if we were lucky, our
parents took us to grandma’s house
in Detroit. Talk about efficient trickor-treating!
I remember being in awe
of my uncle who during the evening
would return to he and grandma’s
home several times to empty a pillow
case full of goodies onto his bed. He
had Halloween down pat!
this Halloween in grosse pointe,
be careful of the kids. It is harder to
see this time of year as dusk turns to
darkness. beware and take care so the
night is a treat not a nasty trick!
the farm was a better place to
celebrate thanksgiving Day. It just
seemed fitting that many of the
thanksgiving meal produce — beans,
squash, potatoes, canned beets, ham

(but not the turkey) were raised
ourselves. It truly made us feel
thankful!
this year, what with the economy
still weighing on everyone’s mind —
and pocketbook — it is even more
important to be thankful for the many
blessings we do have. of course, there
are our families and children without
whom our lives would be sad and
lonely. there are also our friends and
colleagues and neighbors who make
living in grosse pointe so great. And,
of course, there is “grosse pointe” —
the neighborhoods, the churches, the
homes, the institutions and the lake —
that make living here feel so “right.”
And don’t forget to thank and
patronize our many businesses that
are struggling to survive so that when
we need them, they are there. our
businesses make living, working and
shopping in grosse pointe fun and
charming in a way that other suburbs
will never know.
