Obama
warns of
risks over
budget cut
uncertainty
JULIE PACE,
AP White House
Correspondent
WASHINGTON (AP) — President
Barack Obama on
Monday said looming automatic
spending cuts are already
affecting the
economy, while a top administration
official warned
that the nation’s borders
would be less secure if billions
of dollars are yanked
from the budget Friday.
“The uncertainty is already
having an effect,”
Obama said. “Companies
are preparing layoff notices.
Families are preparing
to cut back on
expenses. The longer these
cuts are in place, the bigger
the impact will become.”
Despite the urgent
rhetoric, there was no indication
the White House and
congressional Republicans
were actively negotiating a
deal to avoid the so-called
sequester ahead of the end
of the week deadline. The
last known conversation
between Obama and GOP
leaders was last week and
there have been no in-person
meetings between the
parties this year.
With Congress back
from a weeklong recess,
House Speaker John
Boehner showed little willingness
to move off his
long-held position that the
sequester be offset through
targeted spending cuts, not
the package of cuts and tax
increases Obama supports.
“Mr. President, you got
your tax increase,” Boehner
said, referring to the tax
rate increases that took effect
on Jan. 1. “It’s time to
cut spending here in Washington.”
It’s that time of year for car shows and craft shows. Pictured above is what is known as a ‘Rat Rod’,
typically an old vehicle put together by whatever means available.
Register to win one that will be given away at the Swamp Stomp event to be held Saturday in Galliano.
Car, craft shows highlight
upcoming spring events
Finding yourself just a little bored these days
without football or Mardi Gras? There’s plenty to
do and see just around the corner.
Springtime is a typical time of year for outdoor
events, things like car shows, craft shows,
cook-offs, and the like. And this spring is no different.
One such event to watch out and plan to attend
is the Swamp Stomp, an annual event benefiting
the Make-A-Wish foundation.
The Swamp Stomp, set for Saturday, March
2, is now in its fourth year and will include a custom
car show, drag strip races, a doughnut pit,
live bands and auction, Cajun cooking, vendors,
and a chance to win a Rat Rod.
The event is held at the Bayou Centroplex,
along Hwy. 308 in Galliano. Gates will open at 8
a.m.
Raffle tickets are now being sold with the winner
receiving a 1930 Ford Sedan Rat Rod built by
the Boneyard Kreepers. Tickets are $100 each
with only 200 being sold.
To purchase tickets, or for more information
on this event, call 637-2414, 637-4294 or 637-
6320.
Another event on the near horizon is the annual
car and craft show sponsored by the VFW
Post 8538 and Ladies Auxiliary of Larose.
Car owners and crafters alike are invited and
encouraged to register for this event to be held
Saturday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the
VFW Hall located at the end of W. 25th St. in
Larose (behind LCO School).
CFF, Lion’s Club to benefit from first local Big
Bayou Music Festival
In the spirit of worthy
causes, another local “festival”
has been born. It will be called
the “Big Bayou Music Festival”
and will be held this weekend,
March 1-3, in Houma at the
Evergreen Cajun Center.
Put together by Reed and
Denise Callais, Carl Cortez
(Houma) and Amy Tantillo
(Hammond), the proceeds of the
three day event will go to the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Some of the proceeds will also
go to the Lion’s Club.
“Every year a Swamp Pop
festival is held at the Lamar-
Dixon complex in Gonzales for
Cystic Fibrosis. We’ve been part
of that event, but we wanted to
do something nearer to home,”
said Reed Callais.
He is hoping that a festival
featuring swamp pop, country,
and some rock and roll music
and dancing, along with many
other events will bring together
people from the bayou area who
want to donate to a worthy
cause. The indoor facility was
chosen to protect everyone from
weather changes and feature a
cozy atmosphere.
“This is the first festival of
the season in the
Lafourche/Terrebonne area,
and we are hoping to draw from
6-10,000 people during the
three days,” he said.
Monday, February
Louisiana Department
of Transportation
and
D e v e l o p m e n t
(DOTD) started giving
away 100
GeauxPass toll
tags per day (or
while supplies last)
to drivers opening
a new account. The
promotion, sponsored
by the LA1
Coalition, is aimed at expediting drivers
traveling experience at the LA 1
toll and only available at the Golden
Meadow Customer Service Center.
DOTD offers tips on best
way to use LA-1 in-lane
cash and charge machine
Leeville, La. – The Louisiana Department
of Transportation and Development
(DOTD) wants to remind
travelers and regular commuters at the
LA 1 toll road of the best way to expedite
travel through the gantry.
“We must continue to communicate
with our customers to give them
confidence that they are using the machine
properly,” said Rhett Desselle,
DOTD Assistant Secretary of Operations.
“We monitor the LA 1 toll daily,
so we are on top of any challenges.”
The most efficient way to expedite
the toll process is for motorists, especially
regular commuters, to open a
GeauxPass Toll Tag account. Drivers
can avoid lines or delays in the dedicated
left lane for toll tag users.
Retirees Beware!
Bobby Jindal’s latest attack
on retirees is to do
away with State Income Tax
and add to State Sales
Taxes. Be aware that the
State Income Tax does not
tax Social Security income.
It also does not tax state,
municipal, or parish employees’
retirement income,
or retired teachers income,
as these people do not receive
Social Security income.
Higher sales taxes
would leave these people
with even less money to
spend on necessities. Municipalities,
parishes and
school systems have depended
on sales taxes to
support their services to the
citizens of this state. They
will be greatly hurt by this
increase in state sales tax
collections because citizens
will not likely vote for more
sales taxes or for renewal of
current taxes.
Again Jindal proposes
taking care of the wealthy at
the expense of the majority
meeting. Members are
asked to invited a guest.
The Catholic Daughters
6-A Wednesday, February 27, 2013 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Budget From 1-A
The $85 billion budgetutting
mechanism could
ffect everything from comercial
flights to classooms
to meat inspections.
omestic and defense
pending alike would be
rimmed, leading to furoughs
for hundreds of
housands of government
orkers and contractors.
Also Monday, Interior
ecretary Ken Salazar said
isiting hours would be cut
t all 398 national parks,
ust as they prepare for an
nflux of spring and sumer
visitors.
Many of the nation’s
overnors, who are gathred
in Washington for
heir annual meeting,
oiced frustration over the
mpending cuts, saying
ashington’s inability to
strike a deal had created
widespread uncertainty in
the economy and hampered
economic recovery in their
states.
“The president needs to
show leadership,” said
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal,
a Republican considered
a potential 2016
presidential contender, following
a meeting with
Obama. “The reality is it
can be done. This administration
has an insatiable
appetite for new revenue.”
South Carolina Gov.
Nikki Haley, a favorite of
her party’s conservative
wing, pointed her anger at
both Democrats and Republicans.
“No one should be playing
golf. No one should be
taking vacations,” Haley
said, taking a shot at
Obama’s recent golf outing
and Congress’ latest recess.
“What they need to do is do
what these governors do
every day. We stay until we
get it done.”
Democratic Gov. Dannel
Malloy of Connecticut
concurred. “They need to
get out of that box that sits
under the dome and understand
that this has real implications
in people’s lives,”
he said. “Work with the
president, find a way to get
it done — or if you want,
just turn it over to us governors,
and we’ll negotiate.”
The governors, emerging
from a closed-door
meeting with Obama Monday,
said the president had
assured them the administration
is pursuing solutions,
but offered no
assurances that officials
would find a way ahead out
ahead of the deadline.
Winners will be chosen
from all classes of cars. Preregistration
fee is $25.
Sponsors for the event are
also being accepted at this
time.
A hot Cajun-style plate
lunch, snacks and drinks
will be available for purchase.
A parade of prizes
with proceeds going to
local, district and national
Veterans programs will also
be held.
event, contact Marilyn at
Hall at 693-8600.
So, get out of the house
and plan to take the family
to these events that benefit
two worthwhile organizations.
Festival From 1-A
Daily admission for the
festival will be $10 on Friday
and Sunday, and $15 on
Saturday.
Unlike other local
events such as the French
Food Festival in Larose and
the Cut Off Youth Center
Fair, which have 25-35 people
involved in organizing
the weekend, Callais says
“Big Bayou” will be overseen
by only himself, his wife
Denise, and Cortez and Tantillo.
“It’s been an adventure,
but everything is falling into
place,” he said.
In addition to the
music, the festival will offer
carnival rides, food and
drinks, crafts and vendors,
and a car show on Saturday.
Food will include jambalaya,
hamburgers,
seafood pistolettes, fried
shrimp, and some other
“surprises”, said Callais.
The fight to find a cure
for Cystic Fibrosis is close to
being realized, according to
Callais. He noted that 83%
of all money raised by the
CF Foundation goes directly
into research, the highest
percentage of any group
raising money to fight disease.
He and his cohorts are
hoping that in the future the
success of this event will
lead to the group’s ability to
funnel money into other
needed charities like
Alzheimer’s or Diabetes research.
“We’re trying to get the
word out so people can
make a choice to come,” said
a hopeful Callais.
Evergreen Cajun Center
in on LA Hwy. 24, about a
mile south of State Police
Troop C.
Anyone wishing to learn
more about the festival or
State promotes
Citizens rebates
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) —
Louisiana taxpayers are
leaving tens of millions of
property insurance rebates
unclaimed each year.
Insurance Commissioner
Jim Donelon said
Thursday the reason is that
nearly two-thirds of property
owners are foregoing the rebates
for the Louisiana Citizens
Property Insurance
Corp. assessment.
Donelon said at the end
of 2012, more than $255
million remained unclaimed.
He says property owners
have a limited time to claim
the rebates. The option to
claim the rebate for the 2009
assessment expires after
Dec. 31.
The rebates for 2009 to
2012 can be claimed on
property owners’ Louisiana
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) —
The amount of debt
Louisiana carries for each
state resident rose again
over the last year.
A report to the state
Bond Commission on Thursday
showed Louisiana carried
a debt load of $1,336 for
every man, woman and child
in the state as the books
were closed for 2012. That’s
an increase of $18 per person
from the previous year.
to finance construction projects,
As deadline looms,
governors join White
House to condemn
automatic cuts
WASHINGTON (AP) — With
the deadline for action less
than a week away, exasperated
governors are joining a
White House push to intensify
pressure on Congress to
prevent a looming budget
crisis.
Both Democrat and Republican
chief executives,
gathered in Washington for
the National Governors Association
annual meeting,
warned of widespread economic
fallout should Washington
lawmakers fail to
reach an 11th-hour compromise.
“It’s senseless and it
doesn’t need to happen,”
Maryland Gov. Martin O’-
Malley, a Democrat, said
Saturday. “And it’s a damn
shame, because we’ve actually
had the fastest rate of
jobs recovery of any state in
our region. And this really
threatens to hurt a lot of
families in our state and
kind of flat line our job
growth for the next several
months.”
Indeed, some governors
expressed pessimism that
both sides could find a way
to avoid the automatic
spending cuts set to begin
March 1, pointing to the impasse
as another crisis between
the White House and
Congress that spooks businesses
from hiring and hampers
their ability to construct
state spending plans.
for whatever comes,”
Brockton police say the boy
and told the dispatcher he
was calling to report his
mother because he did not
2-B Wednesday, February 27, 2013 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
Colonels to start 2013 football season
with tough road game at Oregon
The Nicholls State University
football program announced
its 2013 schedule
on Wednesday, February
20 th , which will pit the
Colonels against three FBS
programs for the second
straight year including national-title
contender Oregon
and in-state rival
Louisiana-Lafayette, along
with five home games at
John L. Guidry Stadium.
“I feel like our 2013
schedule will be the most
challenging scheduled in
Nicholls football history,”
said Nicholls head football
coach Charlie Stubbs, who
is entering his fourth year
at the helm of the Colonel
program. “All three of our
FBS opponents are excellent
programs, so it will be
a great opportunity to compete
and improve as we’ll
play in tough environments
that will prepare us for the
Southland Conference.”
The Colonels will open
the 2013 campaign with
their second consecutive
trip to the Pacific Northwest,
taking on the Fiesta
Bowl Champion Oregon
Ducks on Aug. 31. The
Ducks are coming off a 12-
1 season as they finished
the season ranked No. 2 in
the nation in both Top 25
polls.
“Oregon will be the
toughest team that we’ve
played in program history,”
Coach Stubbs said. “They
will most likely be ranked
No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation,
so we know it’s a huge challenge.”
Following the Oregon
game, Nicholls will play two
familiar foes – Western
Michigan (Sept. 7) and
Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept.
14). The meeting with Western
Michigan will be the
third in the last four years,
while the Colonels will bat-
“Kalamazoo has been a
great atmosphere the last
couple times that we have
been there. Even with a
new coaching staff, it will
be a great opportunity to
play a team from the Mid-
American Conference”
Stubbs said. “And
Louisiana-Lafayette, they
are an excellent program
that’s headed in the right
direction. We played them
tooth-and-nail two years
Before heading into
Southland Conference play,
Nicholls will make their
Guidry Stadium debut on
Sept. 21 against Langston,
followed by another home
game versus Arkansas Tech
(Sept. 28). Langston, a
NAIA school, went 6-4 last
season while Arkansas
Tech, a NCAA Division-II
program, posted a 5-6
record in 2012.
After a bye week, the
Colonels host Northwestern
State on Oct. 12 for their
SLC opener. For the rest of
the month, Nicholls will
play at Stephen F. Austin
(Oct. 19) before taking on
McNeese State (Oct. 26) in
Thibodaux.
In November, Nicholls
will have consecutive games
in Texas with contests at
Lamar (Nov. 2) and back-toback
FCS national runnerup
Sam Houston State
(Nov. 9). The Colonels will
play their final home game
on Nov. 16 against Central
Arkansas before the Thursday-night
season-finale at
Southeastern La. (Nov. 21)
in the River Bell Classic.
Nicholls will begin its
spring schedule on April 9.
MEMORIALS
In Memory Of
LEON
CHARPENTIER
(aka) Boo Boo
Born: Sept. 24, 1977
Died: Feb. 27, 2010
Life is but a stepping
stone place, a pause in
what is to be a resting
place, along the road to
sweet eternity.
We all have different
journeys, different paths
along the way, we all
were meant to learn
something, but never
meant to stay.
Our destination is a
place for greater than we
know, for some the journeys
quicker, for some
the journeys slow. And
when the journey finally
ends, will claim a greating
peace together with
the Lord.
