Council
refuses
to roll
forward
millages
By Buster Avera
Contributing Writer
As promised by some
parish Councilmen, the
Lafourche Parish Legislative
Body voted not to roll
forward any of the millage
requests before them at
Tuesday’s special meeting.
Two Fire Districts, the
Council on Aging, and the
Library Board each asked
for a roll forward—a higher
millage than necessary to
generate the same revenue
as they received for 2011.
And each was voted
down by the Council, which
granted them only a maximum
adjusted millage
rate—one which would generate
the same revenue as
the previous year.
According to the Home
Rule Charter, a favorable
vote of six members is required
to roll forward a
millage.
Although the two Fire
Districts, both in the Thibodaux
area, were given some
consideration by the Council,
their requests for higher
rates were turned down.
Levee lift to begin
from Delta Farms
SLLD reminds landowners of upcoming construction
By Buster Avera
Contributing Writer
The South Lafourche Levee District (SLLD) is making its
final plea to all landowners in the East Larose area before it
begins another lift of the Delta Farms to Clovelly Farms portion
(Section F) of the levee system.
In a letter sent last month from General Manager Windell
Curole, SLLD is notifying landowners that the right of way,
acquired in the 1980’s has been cleared and marked and excavation
will begin soon.
“Sometime in November we will have a contractor on site
excavating material up to the marked right-of-way line,” says
Curole.
All of the dirt in the right-of-way will be transferred to
the levee side of the borrow canal and placed on the levee to
heighten it and further enhance flood protection, according
to the letter.
SLLD also reminds landowners that certain improvements
in the right of way, such as dog pens, docks, or other
buildings/trailers, should be removed immediately.
Tuesday’s ballot
By: Doug Cheramie, II
Contributing Writer
In addition to a full slate of local,
regional and state offices, voters Tuesday
will also decide the fate of nine
proposed amendments to the
Louisiana Constitution.
Proposed amendment one deals
with the Medicaid Trust Fund and
would add the Medicaid Trust Fund for
the elderly to the list of protected funds
that are exempt from adjustment if a
deficit to the fund is forecast.
Proposed amendment two would
provide that the right of each citizen in
the state to keep and bear arms shall
not be infringed.
Proposed amendment three would
require that any proposed legislation to
change laws relating to retirement systems
for public employees be prefiled
and publicly listed no later than 45
days prior to the beginning of the regular
legislative session.
Proposed amendment four would
Amendment 8 means
job growth for the
bayou region
On November 6th,
Louisiana Bayou Region
voters face key decisions in
federal, state and local elections.
The ballot also contains
important proposed
amendments to the
Louisiana Constitution, including
one that could significantly
improve our
state’s ability to create new
jobs with both existing businesses
and in competing
with other states in attracting
new industry.
This particular Proposed
Amendment I’m
speaking of is Amendment
No. 8. A vote FOR this
amendment would encourage
businesses to invest in
Louisiana and our region by
providing a property tax exemption
to competitive projects
in target industries,
such as corporate headquarters,
data and technology
centers, and logistics
and distribution facilities.
Louisiana and the region
now loses many of these
projects to states that offer
a lower effective property
tax rate, regardless of the
type workforce or quality of
life they have to offer new
business prospects.
To give us an edge on
the competition, the Legislature
approved a new Property
Tax Exemption for
Competitive Projects this
year, with Gov. Bobby Jindal
signing and legislation
into law as Act 871. Voters
can complete the final step
in making Louisiana more
competitive for jobs by supporting
Proposed Amendment
No. 8 on Election Day.
When it comes to deciding
who gets the tax benefit,
the decision making process
remains local but more inclusive.
New play entitled ‘Spill’ set
for this Sunday at playhouse
The Bayou Playhouse
will be hosting a reading of
the new play Spill, by nationally
recognized playwright
Leigh Fondakowski
and artist Reeva Wortel.
The play is about the effects
of the Deepwater Horizon
oil spill on South
Louisiana and was written
from actual interviews conducted
with members of the
Bayou community. There
will also be projections of
full-sized portraits of the interviewees.
The reading will
be at the Bayou Playhouse
Sun., Nov. 4, at 2:30 p.m.
Fondakowski and Wortel
conducted interviews in
coastal Louisiana from
March 2011 to April 2012,
talking with people across
the political spectrum, in-
Letters and Opinions
untary for each parish, with
agreement needed from
parish governments, municipalities,
sheriffs, school
boards and assessors. Participating
parishes would
enjoy greater tax revenue as
Louisiana wins these projects.
Companies that qualify
would be taxed on the
first $10 million or 10 percent
of their investments,
whichever is greater, meaning
local governments and
schools would gain new
funds. The remaining investment
would be tax-exempt
no more than 10
years.
By making Louisiana
more competitive, we’ll
make our state much more
capable of attracting the
jobs we want for our children
and grandchildren. We
will offer this incentive only
to companies in target sectors
that make a minimum
capital investment of $25
million and create a minimum
of 50 jobs. Many projects
will be much larger as
we move along with this advantage.
There are several
statewide news publications/organizations
and
communities supporting
this amendment, just look
them up in their current or
upcoming issues. It is
hoped that bayou region
residents do the same, supporting
an amendment that
would be a real “game
changer” for us economic
developers and the communities
we serve.
The lives of the people
SPILL not only recounts
the dramatic story of the
tragedy on board the Deepwater
impact of the oil
spill on the estuary and marine
life, but also takes a
close look at the people, the
history, the culture, and the
environmental crisis of
coastal erosion facing
southern Louisiana.
“Tragedies are a part of
“part of the
human experience. But people
continue to amaze and
of 5241 Hwy. 1 in Raceland,
a registered Tier 3 sex
deputies found he had altered
his license in an attempt
to conceal his status
as a sex offender.
As part of the annual
Blue Light Special, every
streets of Lafourche Parish
to help ensure the safety of
those partaking in Halloween
of this effort was added
to ensure they are complying
with the aspects of
4-A Sunday, November 4, 2012 THE LAFOURCHE GAZETTE
2012 would not be granted
Amendments as they sent a letter to the
Council at the last minute
withdrawing their request
for an increase to 2.0 mills.
The Council voted
unanimously against rolling
forward and granted the
COA its adjusted maximum
of 1.98 mills.
The Library’s roll forward
request was a more
contentious debate. Mrs.
Lynette Fossum, the Library
Board of Control President,
argued against the charge
by many Councilmen that
her board already has an
excessive fund balance.
“We have $9 million in
the bank, but we have unresolved
things,” she said, referring
to ongoing problems
with the Thibodaux Library’s
Proposed amendment
five would require the forfeiture
of public retirement
benefits by any person convicted
of a felony related to
the public office or employment
held while committing
the crime. The effective date
for this proposal would
apply to any persons hired
or elected to office on or
after January 1, 2013. Any
forfeited benefits would then
be applied to the unfunded
accrued liability of the individual’s
retirement system.
Proposed amendment
six would allow the City of
New Iberia to grant exemptions
from taxes on property
annexed by the city after
January 1, 2013.
Proposed amendment
seven would adjust the
number of seats on educational
boards such as the
LSU Board of Supervisors
and the Board of Regents to
15, with two members from
each of the state’s six congressional
district and the
remainder to be appointed
from the state at large.
Currently, two members
from each of the state’s
seven congressional districts
make up the composition
of these boards, with
one member selected from
the state at large.
Proposed amendment
eight would authorize the
granting of ad valorem tax
exemptions to eligible businesses
that undertake a facility
expansion or business
expansion. Act 871 of the
2012 regular session of the
Louisiana Legislature spells
out the criteria for the exemption,
contingent on this
amendment passing on November
6. Eligibility for the
exemption would be limited
to those projects for a new
or expanded facility with a
capital expenditure over
$25 million and with the expectation
that at least 50
jobs will be created.
Proposed amendment
nine would require that
public notice in a newspaper
being given three times
instead of two the notice of
intent to introduce a bill
creating a special district to
aid in crime prevention.
The notice must also note if
a fee would be required in
the creation of the district.
Council From 1-A
District 7, in a letter to
the Council, asked for the
increase in order to upgrade
its equipment, but had no
representation at Tuesday’s
meeting.
Councilman Phillip
Gouaux spoke in support of
District 7’s request.
“This is a group established
for our protection. I
would think we would support
their request,” he said.
But Councilman Jerry
Lafont, noting that two of
District 7’s board members
are tax exempt, was less favorable
in his opinion.
“It is easy to raise taxes
when you don’t pay taxes,”
he said.
The roll forward failed.
The vote was 4-2, with Lafont
and Lindel Toups voting
against. Jones, Delatte,
and Arnold were absent.
Similarly, when Fire
District 4’s roll forward millage
was considered, Councilmen
were not willing to
grant a higher millage for
2012.
“We have $2000 in the
bank,” said District 4 Board
Chairman Kerry Alley. “We
are in a partnership with the
Thibodaux Fire Department.
They own, operate, and
maintain all our equipment.
They are in the process of
buying a new truck for us.
That is why we ask for the
increased revenue. It will
equal about $6000.”
Councilman Lindel
Toups said the Thibodaux
Fireman’s Fair breaks revenue
records every year. “I
can’t vote for a roll forward,”
he said.
The vote was 3-3. Lorraine,
Lafont, and Toups
voted against the roll forward.
WASHINGTON (AP) - For the
Nicholls student athletes’
graduation rate at all-time high
THIBODAUX — Nicholls
State University’s student
athletes are graduating at
some of the highest rates in
the state, according to statistics
released by the National
Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) last
week.
The Graduation Success
Rate (GSR) report
shows that 68 percent of
Nicholls student athletes
who began college in 2005
earned their degrees within
six years. That’s an all-time
high for Nicholls and a twopoint
increase over the previous
year’s rate.
Among Louisiana’s 11
public universities with Division
1 athletics, Nicholls has
the fourth-highest overall
GSR — tying with Northwestern
State University and
only trailing the significantly
higher-funded Louisiana
State University, Louisiana
Tech University and Mc-
Neese State University.
“I am very proud of our
continued success in improving
the graduation rate
of student athletes,” said
Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert,
university president. “For
Nicholls athletics to rank
among the top GSRs in the
state — despite the fact
that we are one of the lowest-funded
athletics programs
— is a great
accomplishment and
speaks volumes about our
student athletes, coaches,
staff and faculty.”
Designed to more accurately
predict the academic
success of athletes, the
GSR measures the proportion
of student athletes who
graduate and includes incoming
transfer students, a
regular occurrence in college
athletics, in its calculations.
When broken down by
individual sport, Nicholls
reported the highest GSRs
in the state and in the
Southland Conference for
men’s tennis (100 percent
graduating) and softball (90
percent). Among Southland
schools, Nicholls also ranks
first in men’s cross country/track
(80 percent), third
in men’s basketball (71 percent)
and third in volleyball
(86 percent). Additionally,
which measured the graduation
“It is no coincidence
Raceland felon caught with narcotics, firearm
A known felon was arrested
after he was caught
with drugs and a firearm
during a traffic stop on
Monday, October 29. Ricky
J. Trosclair, 25, of 2861
Highway 1 in Raceland,
faces several new charges
following Monday’s arrest.
Through investigation,
the Lafourche Parish Drug
Task Force learned
Trosclair possibly had drugs
in his possession, and he
also had an active warrant
for his arrest for violation of
parole and a suspended driver’s
license.
At around 10:45 a.m.
on Monday, narcotics
agents spotted Trosclair
driving a black Lincoln MKZ
in the Raceland area.
When agents initiated a
traffic stop and approached
Trosclair, he gave agents a
false identity.
Louisiana Department of
Probation and Parole was
called to the scene and
Mayor
Joey
Bouziga
Candidate for
re-election - #63
My Dear Friends,
I come before you once more seeking your support in my bid for
re-election as your mayor. Thirty-one years ago you honored me
by electing me as one of your councilmen. I served you as Councilman
for nineteen years and have served as your mayor for the
last twelve years.
The thirty-one years of experience in municipal government and
the successful accomplishments of my administration qualifies
me to continue serving you as mayor. Under my leadership the
administration for the town has worked together to achieve many
goals.
Projects totaling $19,303,582.00 are listed below:
- Administration $2,218,986.00
- Street and Drainage Improvements $4,589,078.00
- Pump Station repairs and upgrades $977,300.00
- Park and Pool upgrades and repairs $725,500.00
- Police overtime grants $51,189.00
- Sewer Projects (Phase III & Phase IV) $3,344,158.00
- Street Resurfacing (Road Sales Tax) $7,397,371.00
In 2004 the Town of Golden Meadow was selected the Cleanest
City in Louisiana for its population. One additional project for
the Town is the sale of the Natural Gas Department. By selling
the gas system we have not only saved $5,000,000.00 in funds to
refurbish the system, but have brought savings of up to fifty percent
to the citizens who purchased natural gas.
I have endeavored to administer the Office of Mayor with honesty
and integrity. I am proud of the improvements in our town these
past years and am excited about what the next four years can
provide for all of us.
I ask for your continued support and consideration for my reelection
as mayor based on my past performance, credibility, and
experience administering municipal government.
With deep appreciation,
I remain,
NEWS IN BRIEF
La. seat belt use
at record high
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -
The use of seat belts in
Louisiana has reached a
record high of 79.3 percent
this year. It’s a factor officials
say is contributing to
the state’s declining highway
death rate.
The 79.3 percent rate is
an increase from last year’s
77.7 percent, which itself
matched a previous all-time
high.
Preliminary crash statistics
for 2011 indicate that
Louisiana’s highway death
toll declined for the fourth
consecutive year. Prior to
the beginning of the decline
in 2008, the number of traffic
fatalities had increased
most years since record
keeping began.
Lt. Col. John LeBlanc,
executive director of the
Louisiana Highway Safety
Commission, said the numerous
programs sponsored
by various agencies
are playing a role in increased
seat belt use and
the decreased number of
lives lost in crashes.
Judge tosses
woman’s “too fat
to fly” lawsuit
MICHAEL KUNZELMAN
Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A
federal judge on Wednesday
dismissed a lawsuit filed
against Southwest Airlines
by a New Orleans woman
who claims a gate agent
told her she was “too fat to
fly” and couldn’t board a
flight last year without buying
two tickets.
In her order, U.S. District
Judge Susie Morgan
said she dismissed Kenlie
Tiggeman’s suit because
she missed a deadline for
responding to Southwest’s
request for the case to be
tossed.
Morgan said the airline’s
request “appears to
have merit,” but she dismissed
the suit without
prejudice, which means
Tiggeman can ask for the
case to be reopened.
Tiggeman filed the lawsuit
herself in a state court
before it was transferred to
the federal court in New
Orleans. She declined to
comment on Morgan’s ruling,
referring questions
about the case to a publicist.
Tiggeman was interviewed
about her claims on
NBC’s “Today Show” after
she sued the airline earlier
this year, claiming its em-
The verdict
A defendant was on
trial for murder. There was
strong evidence indicating
guilt, but there was no
corpse. In the defense’s
closing statement the
lawyer, knowing that his
client would probably be
convicted, resorted to a
trick.
“Ladies and gentlemen
of the jury, I have a surprise
for you all,” the lawyer said
as he looked at his watch.
“Within one minute, the
the courtroom door.
The jurors, somewhat
stunned, all looked on eagerly.
“Actually, I made up the
Shark falls from sky
onto Calif. golf
course
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO,
Calif. (AP) - Golf club employees
in Southern California
came to the rescue
when a shark dropped out
of the sky and flopped
around on the 12th tee.
San Juan Hills Golf
Club operations director
Melissa McCormack says a
course marshal found the
leopard shark Monday afternoon
and brought it to
the clubhouse. It had puncture
wounds where it appeared
a bird had snagged it
from the Pacific Ocean,
about five miles away.
They stuck the approximately
2-pound shark into
fresh water before somebody
remembered it came
from the sea, so they got
some sea salt from the
kitchen and mixed it in.
Another employee
rushed the shark to the
ocean where McCormack
says it was very still for a
few seconds before twisting
around and speeding off.
Skeleton found
when historic Conn.
tree uprooted
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -
New Haven police say superstorm
Sandy has revealed
a skeleton beneath
the town green that may
have been there since Colonial
times.
Police spokesman David
Hartman says a woman who
was with other bystanders
looking at a fallen oak tree
called police Tuesday after
she saw bones in the upturned
roots.
Hartman says the tree
was planted on the green in
1909 on the 100th anniversary
of President Abraham
Lincoln’s birth. He says the
remains likely belong to one
of thousands of people
buried there in Colonial
times. The remains will be
evaluated by the state medical
examiner.
Katie Carbo, who called
police, tells the New Haven
Independent she saw something
in the tree roots, and
found the bones when she
removed some dirt. She
says the skeleton “should be
given a proper burial.”
School bus, truck
crash in Pa. without
drivers
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (AP) -
Police don’t plan to cite the
drivers of a truck and
school bus which crashed in
western Pennsylvania.
But only because neither
vehicle had a driver
when they wrecked.
Police in Patterson
Township tell the Beaver
County Times
(http://bit.ly/UBPOwQ) the
incident happened just before
10 a.m. Tuesday when
the parked bus began to roll
down a hill. Police aren’t
sure why that happened,
because the driver had engaged
the parking brake.
The bus rear-ended a
parked truck, which also
began rolling down the hill
alongside the bus, until the
truck flipped onto its side.
The bus continued on,
shearing off one utility pole
and hitting another before
rolling to a stop a few feet
from the porch of a home.
Nobody was hurt.
Foul-mouthed
parrot seeks new
LONDON (AP) - Everyone
has a few faults. In Beaky’s
case, he swears (a lot) and
he bites.
Not good qualities for a
parrot seeking a new home.
Still, honesty is the best
policy, so the Royal Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals has decided to
come clean about his shortcomings.
Supervisor Angelina
Lusher said Wednesday that
anyone who takes Beaky in
will have to put up with
some rude language. The
agency also says he tends to
bite people until he bonds
with them.
Beaky is a chattering
Lusher says Beaky
needs interaction with peo-
Halloween-colored
lobster caught off
Mass. coast
BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts
fisherman has caught
a creepy-looking lobster
that’s colored to match Halloween.
The New England
female lobster has an orange
side and a black side, with
the colors split perfectly
down the middle.
Marine officials say
such coloration is estimated
million lobsters.
The fisherman who
caught the seasonally colored
crustacean in a trap
last week is from Beverly, a
The rare lobster is
known as a split. Aquarium
officials said Wednesday
splits have been caught in
Maine, Rhode Island and
Nova Scotia in the last 10
years.
Saints learn how opposing
defenses must’ve felt
METAIRIE, La. (AP) - The
New Orleans Saints are
learning how opposing defenses
must’ve felt the past
few years.
Picked apart.
Run over.
Beaten down.
The Saints’ defense is
on pace for a truly historic
season, and that’s not a
good thing. They have already
become the first team
since at least 1950, maybe
ever, to give up more than
400 yards in seven straight
games. On average, they’ve
surrendered 50 yards more
per game than the NFL’s
next-worst team. If this
keeps up, the defending
NFC South champions will
obliterate the record for
most yards allowed in a
season.
Not surprisingly, the
Saints (2-5) are in a truly
desperate state heading
into Monday night’s game
against Philadelphia (3-4),
knowing they must turn
things around, and quickly,
if they want to have a shot
at a fourth straight playoff
appearance.
“It’s very frustrating,”
linebacker Scott Shanle
said Thursday. “Everybody
is trying to put their finger
on what’s wrong. How can
we change it so we’re more
effective? You get millions
of different people with millions
of different suggestions,
whether it be
teammates, coaches, family,
friends. Everybody
thinks they have the answer.”
But don’t expect a
major overhaul. According
to interim coach Joe Vitt,
there’s only so much the
team can do to turn things
around, and it’s not exactly
eye-catching stuff. Better
tackling. Improved fundamentals.
More awareness of
what the other team is trying
to do.
“If you have dramatic
change, radical change,
that’s when the panic sets
in,” Vitt said. “The players
can smell the match burning
before the match is ever
lit. We’ve just got to play
better, coach better, execute
better.”
Those sort of comments
can’t be of much solace to a
fan base that already was
reeling from the bounty
scandal that cost former
defensive coordinator Gregg
Williams his job and re-
PAUL NEWBERRY
AP National Writer
sulted in head coach Sean
Payton being suspended for
the entire year. Williams
was replaced by Steve Spagnuolo,
who has caught
much of the blame for
what’s gone wrong this season.
And, boy, have things
gone wrong.
In the very first game,
rookie Robert Griffin III and
the Washington Redskins
ran wild in the Superdome,
shredding the Saints for
459 yards in a 40-32 upset
that was an ominous sign
of what was to come.
The yards just kept on
coming. Carolina and
Kansas City won their only
games against New Orleans,
ripping off 463 and
510 respectively. Green Bay
put up 421, San Diego 427.
Tampa Bay, hardly an offensive
juggernaut, tore
through the Saints for 513.
Last Sunday night, Peyton
Manning and the Denver
Broncos looked like they
were going against a scout
team, piling up 530 yards
in 34-14 blowout.
That averages out to
474.7 yards per game,
which is 50 yards more
than the next-worst team
on the list, the Buffalo Bills
(424.6). The Saints are on
pace to give up 7,595 yards
for the season, which would
easily take down the record
of 6,793 set way back in
1981 by the Colts (when
they were still in Baltimore).
STATS LLC, which has
records dating back to
1950, says this is worst
seven-game stretch that it
can verify. Given the limited
state of offenses before
then, it’s highly likely that
no team in NFL history has
ever been this bad.
All over the Big Easy,
the Saints faithful are
grumbling about Spagnuolo’s
scheme, which abandoned
much of the blitzing
that Williams did with such
abandon, and berating a
group that did its part the
last three years in support
of Drew Brees and a recordsetting
offense.
Sure, Brees was the
star of the show, running
up and down the field with
opponents in futile pursuit,
but there’s no way the
Saints go 37-11 during that
span and win a Super Bowl
championship without
stopping the other team
every now and then.
Just look what’s happening
now.
Brees and the Saints
know they have to put up a
bunch of points to have any
chance of winning, and
when the offense stumbles,
as it did in Denver, things
can get downright ugly.
“You get what you deserve,”
linebacker Jonathan
Casillas said, referring to
the criticism that has
reached a fever pitch. “It’s
going to keep coming if we
don’t improve. We are all
are very prideful guys in
here. We all want to do better.
We don’t want to be
playing as bad as we’re
playing, both statistically
and out there on the field.”
Brees and his offensive
teammates are careful not
to criticize the defense, always
turning those sort of
questions to look at their
own shortcomings. The offense
is certainly not without
its faults, most notably
an NFL-worst running
game.
“Our job on offense is
to score one more point
than them,” Brees said.
“We’ve won games around
here 14-9. We’ve won
games 40-to-30-something.
The way I look at it is we’re
a 30-to-40-a-game offense.
Regardless of what’s happening
on the defensive
side of the ball ... we have
the attitude on offense that
we should score each time
we get the ball. If we don’t,
it’s not good enough.”
Certainly not the way
the defense is playing now.
Notes: The Saints resigned
WR Greg Camarillo,
who has been on and off
the roster all season. They
cleared a spot by waiving
TE Daniel Graham, who
missed last week’s game
with an injured left knee.
RB Darren Sproles (hand)
did not practice Thursday.
WR Courtney Roby (left
shoulder) was also out.
What
a
Life!
By: Rev. Wilmer L. Todd
Americans have a
sacred right, duty and
privilege to vote
This Tuesday, November
6, we will have the opportunity
to cast our ballots in an
election with national and
local consequences. I think
the Presidential elections are
too long and drawn out. Too
much time and money are
spent on them. My solution
is to get rid of the Electoral
College and have a true national
election. The candidates
will have to address
everyone, not just the people
in “swing states.”
Religious people have to
decide what are the moral
issues involved in the election
and then follow their
consciences about who will
be best to carry out these
values. Let’s pray to God for
the wisdom to choose the
right candidates for the various
offices.
As Americans, we have
a right, duty and privilege to
vote. If we really believe in a
democratic society, then
voting should be a top priority.
In every presidential
election, about half the eligible
citizens cast ballots. In
recent times a slim majority
of those voting have decided
most of the elections. That
means that a small minority
of American citizens elects a
president. That’s sad! Every
eligible citizen should vote.
The Catholic Bishops
Raceland Aux. Unit 349
upcoming activities
The regular monthly
meeting of the Raceland
American Legion Auxiliary,
Unit 349 was held at the
Post home with President
Rosalie Knobloch presiding.
Membership Chairman
Iris Robichaux reported that
215 members had paid their
dues so far and encouraged
the others to do so as soon
as possible.
The Unit donated $100
to the New Orleans VA Hospital
donation to Habitat for Humanity
to help build homes
for the needy.
Van Dunn, VA&R
Chairman, reported that
she is still collecting cotton
bags to give to the veterans
at the Reserve Veterans
The Make a Difference
was held in New Orleans on
October 27 near the Veterans
packed hundreds of boxes of
clothes to give out at the
function. The homeless veterans
were given clothes,
non-perishable food, dental
and medical attention. After
all the veterans get the
clothes they need the homeless
of New Orleans are then
allowed to come get clothing.
The Unit sent money to
the Second Harvest Food
88 people for Thanksgiving
and also gave McDonald gift
cards to two local children
whose father is serving in
the armed forces overseas.
The Unit paid its Partnership
Renewal dues to
Special Olympics, LA.
Americanism Chairman
Cindy Thibodaux reported
that the theme for this
year’s Americanism Essay
Contest is: “What Freedom
Do I Enjoy Most?” She will
soon be working on this
project with the students in
all the public and catholic
Pres. Knobloch invited
members to attend the Veterans
along with a meal and a
Doris Lagarde,
Publicity Chairman
have outlined seven basic
principles and moral issues
that we should consider
when we vote:
1) The Right to Life and
the Dignity of the Human
Person. Direct attacks on
innocent human beings are
never morally acceptable.
This would include attacks
from abortion, euthanasia,
human cloning, and destruction
of human embryos
for research. We
should also oppose genocide,
torture, unjust war,
human trafficking, and the
death penalty. We should
align ourselves with those
who pursue peace and help
overcome poverty, racism,
2) Protecting Families
and Community. The family
is the fundamental unit of
society. We must not undermine,
Each of us has a right to religious
