3.2. Survey block design All potenti al rhino habitats (both inside and outside the protected areas) were divided into blocks based on physical demarcati on using a topographic map (scale 1:25,000) and fi eld knowledge. Reconnaissance surveys were also conducted in the more diffi cult areas to refi ne the blocks and plan for the sweeping operati on. For Bardia NP, the area where rhino are known to exist, around the Karnali fl ood-plain and the corridor forest along the Geruwa river connecti ng Bardia NP with Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary (WS), India was divided into 5 blocks (Figure 7). A 2-day rapid survey of the Babai valley was also planned to confi rm the reported absence of rhino in the valley.
