Labor Day
Labor Day is a national holiday honoring workers all over the United States. In the late
1800’s Peter McGuire thought that workers needed a holiday for all of their hard work but
why would he choose September? September is midway month through the long stretch
between 4th of July and Thanksgiving. The first observance on this holiday was held in
NYC on September 5, 1882 when 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square
in New York City, holding the first-ever Labor Day Parade. Participants in the parade took
an unpaid day-off to honor the workers of America. In 1887, 5 states were first to declare
it a state holiday: Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. In
1894, Congress passed a law making Labor Day an official holiday.
Keeping Kids healthy during the start of
School
With school starting and families on the go, it is hard to get a healthy
meal for the entire family. One way to start off good is to rise and dine
together. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so why not
spend it with your family. Research shows that kids that eat breakfast
are less overweight and do better in school than those who don’t eat
breakfast. You do not have to fix a full course meal for the morning
meal, something easy but healthy. Complex carbohydrates is one of the
beneficial part of your breakfast because they produce a long-lasting
supply of glucose for the body and brain. So if you don’t have time for
the sit down formal breakfast here are some simple meals that are quick,
easy, and healthy.
*Whole-grain toast topped with reduced-fat cheddar cheese and a cup of fruit
*1/2 whole-wheat English muffin with 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese and banana
*Cooked oatmeal with applesauce swirled in topped with raisins and chopped almonds
and 8 ounces of low-fat yogurt.
*Egg and pita sandwich: 1 egg scrambled in 1 teaspoon of olive oil stuffed into
whole-wheat pita pocket and topped with salsa
*Breakfast parfait: layer 1 cup of low-fat yogurt, 1/2 cup crunchy whole-grain cereal and
1 cup of fresh chopped fruit or whole berries.
Exercises for Children
Not just eating healthy is important for children but physical activity is
essential. It may be starting to get cold outside but that doesn’t mean that
they can’t stay active. Physical activity not only strengthens muscles,
bones and joints, it gives children confidence while having fun. Unlike
adults that only need 30 minutes of activity a day, children need 60 minutes
of daily activity. Simple games such as hopscotch, tossing a ball back and
forth and dancing are great ways for kids to be active. Also don’t force your
children to physically active when you are sitting around doing nothing.
Parents need to be a role model, a physically active role model. Not sure
what kind of activities to do with your child, here are some ideas.
*Plan active weekends that include biking, hiking, skating, walking or playing ball.
*Offer to join you child in his/her favorite physical activity.
*Limit inactive behavior such as television and computer time. If you watch
television, during commercials, due marching, jumping jacks or stretching.
*Keep TV’s out of children’s rooms.
*Give your children gifts that encourage physical activity - sporting equipment,
Frisbee, any kind of active games.
