VILLAGE ADMINISTRATOR’S corner
MANY TIMES, WE walk through our busy day with barely a glance at
our surroundings. Life is funny that way. We think we know what is
going on around us but do we really look at stuff? Some days, I leave
my house to head out for work and I think to myself, did I even stop
for a moment to really look at the kids before I left today? Yes, I see
them in the house, I may even talk to them as I am doing a multitude
of other things, but, do I really look at them? You may get that
same feeling some times when you drive. Suddenly, you find yourself
several miles down the road from the last point that you really remember.
Normally, the reaction is to get scared. Did I really just drive
that far without really remembering what I was doing? Unfortunately,
that is the result of our busy lives. In a perfect world, we would slow
down and pay a little bit more attention, especially to those important
people around us.
Let me share a couple pieces of gratitude for things that I have
noticed recently as I have tried to pay more attention to the smaller
things in life. First, I really appreciate working here in this Village. I
think this community and the people who live here, are quite special.
I love to ride on the donated Segway and drive around the Village to
meet and talk with people. I like the positive feelings I get by helping
people. Just today, a resident was so happy after our phone call that
it made me really happy just being able to make her day with the information
I gave to her. There are many more examples I could share,
but let me talk about one other thing I am really aware of: Maple Bluff
has some of the best people working for the Village!
I make that statement as I review our Village Staff. The people who
work here are some of the most conscientious, hardworking, caring,
thoughtful, and committed people I’ve ever been around. They care
about their jobs and making sure they are doing good work on behalf
of the Village. In many communities, the staff lives where they work,
so they have a vested interest in the work they do. That is not the case
here; very few of our staff members have direct ties to the Village. But
that said, I have found that it really does not matter. We all care for
the Village as if we did live here and I have found our elected officials
and most residents, treat us just as though we were their neighbors.
The positive feelings really seem to go in both directions.
One of my jobs is to make sure that as our staff changes, new people
that we hire come in with the same hard working, positive attitudes
we are all used to. We want new staff to adopt the values and morals
that the Village expects. As I work with the Village Board, we are
planning for staff changes. I am anticipating that over half of the full
time Village staff will be retiring within the next ten years or so. That
In the Northgate Shopping Center
is a lot of institutional knowledge of our Village that will no longer
be here. Recently, some of those changes have begun. Sandy Wilke,
Clerk/Treasurer for the past fourteen years recently resigned to move
into retirement. Also, Rick Rogers, who has worked with the Public
Works Department for the past fourteen years, has gone on a leave
for a medical issue that will likely not allow him to come back to
work. With the loss of these two employees, we have begun the process
of evaluating our needs. We are considering options for replacements
or, for job reassignments. Please trust that with the guidance
of the Village Board, we will make the best decision for the Village. I
would like to thank both Sandy and Rick for their long time service
to the Village!
One other thing I want YOU to start paying more attention to.
That is, your own personal safety and that of your property. We continue
to emphasize that you need to lock cars and garages to protect
yourself from thievery. We had many residents hit numerous times
the past couple months. Don’t worry about what street they hit, don’t
worry about what they took in those past incidents. Just worry about
taking care of your property and your family. Lock your doors, don’t
keep valuables in your cars, be aware of your surroundings and if you
do that, that will be the best attention that you can pay to protect
yourself.
Dear Residents,
There’s nothing like a Wisconsin October! As a life-long Wisconsin resident one of the
best days of every year is when I pull out the sweatshirts for the first time. For me, it
symbolizes a special season full of opportunities to make memories. There are football
games spent under blankets on cold bleachers and football watching parties packed
with everyone’s favorite comfort foods! October is my favorite month of the year due
in part to the baseball and football seasons overlap this month.
If you’re not a sports fan there are outdoor opportunities, Halloween costume shopping/making,
fall foliage tours and the foods that make our homes smell of cinnamon
and spice.
I’d love to hear about what makes fall special in your home. If you’ve got trick-ortreating
photos to share, shots of the season’s colors or your favorite recipe of the season
please contact me at holly@ncpublishers.com.
As neighbors in one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful cities, October in Madison is sure
to be a month of making memories in our homes and in our neighborhood. I’d love
to share your memories with your neighbors!
Enjoy all October has to offer! If you see me in the stands at Camp Randall cheering
on the Badgers at this year’s homecoming
game against Michigan State on Saturday,
October 27th make sure to say, “Hello!”
Happy fall,
HALLOWEEN TRICK OR TREATING HOURS
OCTOBER 31, 4:30-6:30pm
After 6:30pm, please turn off
your porch lights and do not answer
the door for trick or treating
children. Due to a large crowd of
trick or treaters last year that were
disrespectful and often disorderly,
we will be deploying extra staff
this year.
The thefts from vehicles have continued, this includes thefts from
vehicles that are parked in closed garages. Keep in mind that now the
thieves are only a few steps from potentially entering your home. We
have been asked what streets are at risk - our response is ALL of the
streets. There have been thefts of this nature the whole length of the
Village.
I cannot stress enough the importance of taking valuables out of
your vehicles and locking your vehicles even when they are parked inside
your garage. Lock your garage doors, don’t leave them open – an
open door is an invitation.
If you have bicycles, register them with the Village PD. We then
have a record of the serial number. We can’t enter stolen property information
without serial numbers.
Other scenarios to consider:
• A vehicle is entered at a football game, the garage door opener,
GPS and some cash is taken - but it gets worse. When the vehicle
owners returned home; their home had been burglarized. The
thieves had everything that they needed; cash for gas money to
get to the home, directions on the GPS unit, and the garage door
opener to gain entry.
• A woman’s purse is stolen. Her cell phone was in the purse. Her
husband, who is listed under contacts as ‘hubby’, receives a text
message that she has forgotten the PIN for one of their financial
COUPON
Planned Maintenance
Agreement
$ 195
(a $ 35 Savings)
transaction cards. He texts her back with the PIN. By the time they
actually have an opportunity to speak, the account is maxed out.
These are situations that have actually happened to people! Times
are changing, we need to change with them to stay safe and secure
in our homes.
Not only are the times changing, but also the seasons. Give yourself
extra time in your travels. Roadways covered with wet leaves can
be very slippery. On those mornings that your windshield is covered
in frost, give yourself enough time to have a clear windshield. Driving
while peering out a softball-sized clear spot in your windshield is asking
to be involved in an accident.
State Patrol has started a publicized project about texting or emailing
while driving. This is an offense that you can be pulled over and
cited for. The number of individuals behind the wheel that do this
every day are playing roulette with their lives and the lives of others.
In one of the breakout sessions at the Governor’s Highway Traffic
Safety Conference, all the participants were asked to list their top three
concerns about unsafe driving behaviors. From about a dozen choices,
the top 2 concerns by a very wide margin were texting/emailing while
driving and speeding. Is sending that text worth the $100+ ticket and
4 points on your driving record? For a probationary driver, after the
first citation the points are doubled administratively by the Dept. of
Transportation. So, if a probationary driver is stopped for speeding
and texting the speeding citation is 4 points, the second citation the
points will double to 8. BAM! You’ve got 12 points on your driving
record and you just lost your license.
If you have an emergency, call 9-1-1. If you need to speak to an
officer call Dispatch at 255-2345. If you call the Village business line,
it may be HOURS before the on duty police officer gets the message.
The business line should be used for requesting on-street overnight
parking and vacation check requests. Leave a message at extension 113.
If you call the Village Center you are delaying a response. For calls
that come here, we still have to call the Dispatch Center to have an
incident number created. For the officers to take the time to do that
causes delays in our response time to your needs.
Buying LOCAL
Just Got Closer to Home
THE MERITS OF buying goods locally can’t be overstated. It’s good for the earth, good for
the local economy, and allows you to directly support your community. As we approach
the holiday gift-giving season, perhaps you’ll want to check out some items made by a
couple of Maple Bluff artists and a handful of others from the Madison area. It doesn’t
get more local than that!
This second annual Artisan Sale brings local artists’ goods together for a day of preholiday
shopping fun, and convenience since the sale is being held right in the Village of
Maple Bluff. You are invited and welcomed to visit the sale on Saturday, November 10
taught in the Wisconsin school system for nearly 25 years and creates jewelry, drawings,
photo greeting cards, and so much more. An artist her entire life, Mary Ann also commissions
paintings, co-authored a book, and teaches private art lessons. She’ll have an
array of items on hand for sale at the event and invites you to come and meet some of
your neighbors and support artists from the area, like Vicki DeWitt. Vicki is Mary Ann’s
neighbor and has lived in the Village of Maple Bluff for about 18 years. She’s been a knitter
for 13 years and will be selling scarves, hats, and mittens made from the finest yarns.
“This annual sale is a fantastic place to find unique, reasonably priced, gifts. And it
supports your local artists, which makes it a win-win event, said Mary Ann. “Please come
Fire Prevention Week
The reality is that
when fire strikes,
your home could
be engulfed in
smoke and flames in just a few minutes. It is important to have a home
fire escape plan that prepares your family to think fast and get out quickly
when the smoke alarm sounds. What if your first escape route is blocked
by smoke or flames? That's why having two ways out is a key part of any
escape plan. This year’s fire prevention week theme, “Have 2 Ways Out!”,
focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice.
Open House
Notes from the Department of Public Works
A SUMMER OF extreme heat and drought like
conditions will likely not be missed by many. I
for one am looking forward to the cooler days
and evenings that the autumn season provides
to get a chance to catch up on projects or maybe
take a break and get away for a while. None the
less, there will be football weekends and yard
work to perform, so find a good sturdy rake and
take care of business.
As you collect the lawn and garden debris and
place it out near the street for collection, please
remember to place material in like piles. The
leaves should be free of all other debris. Sticks
and branches and woody material should also
be free of lawn and garden debris. To mix these
items up may prevent us from collecting in a
timely fashion - or until you properly separate
materials as needed.
Following these guidelines will help prevent
damage to collection equipment or the personnel
operating the equipment. Also, be sure that
material is NOT placed in the street where it
can be carried (whole or in part) into the storm
water system that is directly connected to the
lake. Avoid placing material near mailboxes,
poles, trees or parking a vehicle that will prevent
us from collecting. These suggestions are
small classes
big results
all very important and help us perform a more
complete and timely service to everyone.
Yard waste, leaves and brush will be collected
thru the end of November and/or early
December. Winter conditions can and do arrive
at this time, so do not delay in getting yard
waste out and available for collection early. We
are able to make village wide collections each
week up until the week of Thanksgiving. To
wait until then or later is a gamble you take, we
will do what we can with consideration of the
seasonal changes.
You will likely see department staff inspecting
storm and sanitary sewer systems this time
of year. There will also be some preventative
maintenance performed. Some of these infrastructure
features are on easements that require
accessing side and/or back yards in order to inspect
and/or perform maintenance.
Refuse and recycle collections are going very
well. Remember that placement of the recycle
cart requires clearance for the mechanical arm
of 3’ all the way around. With our ability to
begin yard waste collections at the beginning
of the week, the terrace and curb line is usually
less crowded.
We have had some recent street maintenance
done on Lakewood/Roxbury consisting of paving
small sections. There will also be some crack
filling done in the next few weeks.
The Marina Project should be nearing completion
soon. I’m looking forward to seeing the
area freshened up.
Please, water your trees! Young and old, small
and large. IF the weather fails to provide, continue
to water at least once a week until the
temperatures drop and frost begins. Consider
mulching, if you have not already.
Thanks! Call with questions or concerns.
Meet Four Generations of
a Maple Bluff Family
Submitted by: Sandy Thomas
OVER THE YEARS, Grandma Olson’s house was a highly trafficked spot. Many neighborhood
children have sat at her table enjoying milk and cookies and listening to Grandpa Olson crack
his jokes. Grandma Olson’s grandchildren would easily escape to her home when they were
not happy with mom and dad. Her love and generosity even extended to family and neighborhood
pets. Numerous times, Grandma would call to inform us that our golden retriever,
Maggie, had arrived on her porch looking for treats. We could not even walk Maggie past
grandma’s house without her expecting a stop to nosh on something good.
Every morning during the school year, Sara, Katie and Michael would stop by Grandma
and Grandpa’s house on the way to the school bus stop. They’d take the daily newspaper down
to their house and spend time chatting with them. Grandma would always keep a watchful
eye on the clock, and out the window, ensuring her grandbabies would never miss the school
bus. When it was time, she’d always say, “Okay, time to get to your bus, grandma will watch
you until you’re on. Have a good day at school and Grandma loves you.” Grandpa would always
follow with, “You be good today, you hear?” As
Grandma would send us off to the school bus, we’d
undoubtedly turn around from time to time to see if
she was still watching us. Without fail, she’d always be
waving out her front door and when we were on the
school bus and driving away, she was still there waving.
Every Easter there was an Easter egg hunt in their
backyard. Grandpa would fill the plastic eggs with
nickels, dimes and quarters. And then of course
Grandma would slip a dollar bill into a few, just for
the big WOW factor of us finding one with a whole
dollar bill in it - we felt rich in that moment. Then
we’d search her house for our hidden Easter Baskets.
Grandpa collected tennis balls from the balls hit
over the country club court fence. We’d help him
scavenge the yard for them, and we’d put them in a
big Rubbermaid bin in his shed. Whenever we needed
some tennis balls, we knew right where to go.
A few years ago, our family started a Christmas Eve tradition of
kickball in the snow at our local park with hot chocolate and a bonfire.
The family breaks out into two teams, “The Nutcrackers” and
“Stocking Stuffers”, and we play nine innings to declare the yearly
winner. The winning team has the privilege of signing the losing
team’s t-shirts with funny quips.
“Maple Bluff has been a special place for all
of us over the years. We have fond memories
of Fourth of July parades and fireworks,
neighborhood block parties, sledding and
skiing on the golf course, swimming at the
beach, riding bikes, gathering at neighbor’s
homes, and watching this special neighborhood remain untouched
by the rapidly evolving world around us. We have long-time
friends that still reside here and now have their children moving
back to raise their own families. Every day is a reminder of
how lucky we are to be a part of this special neighborhood.”
How Low Will They Go?
Mike Bacsi, your Maple Bluff neighbor and senior
mortgage lender at Johnson Bank shares a few thoughts
on the state of home financing this month.
Mortgage rates* have dropped to a level that is hard to believe - a
41-year low! Hereʼs how you can take advantage of the low rates:
• Lower payments mean you can “move-up” and buy your
dream home. Just a few years ago the 30-year rate was
6.00%. Late summer 2012 the rate was 3.55%. A mortgage
payment on that $300K loan would be $443 less per month!
• Refinance from a 30-year to a 15-year, saving thousands of
dollars in interest. For example, a $300K balance on a 30year
fixed at 4.00% refinanced to a 15-year fixed at 2.9% will
save $145,286 in interest over the term of the loan.
• Consider construction financing for major renovations
(something that has become less available from other banks.)
Johnson Bank is a Wisconsin-based, familyowned
business. Local, elite-level service is
our strength. Please let me know if I can
be of assistance!
* Rates are subject to change. Ask Mike for a specific quote and APR.
