BBn technologies Boomerang
the Boomerang shot detection
system pinpoints the source of
incoming small arms fire from the
shooter. Boomerang is available to
u.S. military, law-enforcement
agencies, municipalities, and to
other approved u.S. domestic and
foreign entities. Government
contractors can incorporate
Boomerang into their systems or
platforms.
Boomerang uses passive acoustic
detection and computer-based
signal processing to locate the
shooter. BBn has successfully
eliminated most system false alarms
caused by road bumps, door
slams, wind noise, tactical radio
transmissions, vehicle traffic,
firecrackers, and urban activity.
Features and Benefits
• Boomerang shot detector is able to operate successfully in urban terrain on
moving vehicles
• Boomerang algorithms also suppress return fire alerts: Boomerang is
engineered not to alert when outgoing shots are fired from Boomerang’s
position
• In military environments, Boomerang gives individual soldiers immediate
awareness of hostile fire locations and, when networked, can also provide unit
leaders with the situational awareness needed to coordinate team responses
to hostile fire
Boomerang indicates the azimuth
of incoming small-arms fires by
actuating a light to show the clock
direction and announces that
direction using a recorded voice.
Boomerang indicates the range and
elevation on an leD screen display
on which the lighted displays can
be dimmed.
Boomerang is currently employed
by u.S. forces in Iraq and
afghanistan.
above: Scaneagle ready to go from its launch/Retrieval trailer. right: Scaneagle in flight.
the Scaneagle is a joint production
unmanned aircraft System (uaS) by
the Boeing Company and Insitu Inc.
the program is based on the Insitu
SeaScan unmanned aircraft, coupled
with Boeing’s expertise in the field of
aircraft systems engineering. the
Scaneagle has already posted more
than 350,000 hours of combat flight
time and has proven itself to be
exceptionally reliable, with a record
of greater than 98 percent mission
readiness. the Scaneagle is saving
the lives of coalition defense forces
worldwide with all-weather remote
reconnaissance and target tracking
with exceptional loitering capabilities.
is achieved autonomously
from a catapult system. landing is
achieved through a SkyHook
approach in which the Scaneagle is
captured by the 50-foot-high (fully
VS-e212
Boomerang uses passive acoustic detection and computer-based signal
processing to locate the shooter. When mounted on a vehicle, the system
operates when the vehicle is stationary or moving. Boomerang uses a
single mast-mounted, compact array of microphones to detect incoming
fire. Boomerang detects incoming supersonic small arms fire for bullet
trajectories passing the mast, and for shooters firing at maximum
effective weapons’ ranges. It detects and reports incoming fire and the
relative shooter position (including elevation) quickly.
All ShotSpotter GLS are comprised of three components; a network of
acoustic sensors, the ShotSpotter Location Server, and the ShotSpotter
PSC display software and user interface. When an explosive discharge
occurs within the coverage area, the system detects, locates,
identifies, and classifies the sound in seconds. The information captured is
immediately relayed to the ShotSpotter PSC. Information from a detected
discharge is sent to VSOC Virtual Shield for processing and displaying.
