2 QUESNEL CARIBOO OBSERVER THURSDAY, MAY 22, 1969
by Fete Miller
The Jaycees have redeemed
themselves.
Normally, the expression,
"No shirt too young to stuff'
applies to the ambitious club
of under 35s, but in Quesnel
on Monday they pulled off someting
pretty damn good.
It was billed as a beer and
wine festival Pig and Whistle
session. The club rented the
Legion Hall, hauled in 250 cases
of beer and many jugs of wine
and asked people to have fun.
Judging by the turnout, a lot
of people did have fun. There
was gambling, (Heavens!) and
some crown and anchor fans
actually lost 20 or 30 thousand
dollars. In the funny money the
Jaycees sold, this could have
amounted to as much, as $3.
It started at noon, the same'
time as the Elks' Kiddies day
at Le Bourdais Park, and the
place wasabouthalf full by three
in the afternoon. At eight in
the evening, the place was jammed
with parents and kids. Yes,
kids.
Somewhere, there appears tobe
a lovely loophole in our stupid
liquor laws and clubs, including
our local Jaycees, have found it.
Mom and Dad, usually burdened
with the cost of a baby sitter,
can now take the caln to a beer
festival and have a good time
while the little ones dance; sing
and make merry the way only
six and seven year-olds can.
Stupid? Far from it. If things
like this continue, we might
find ourselves becoming human'
beings again. All of a sudden
, it's not naughty to throw back
a pint, sing along and enjoy
ourselves.
Something like this on a regular
basis would probably outdraw
every pub in town.
And remember, all the profits
go to Jaycee community i
projects.
The talk now is about doing
it again during rodeo time. One
Jaycee figures the club could put
up a big tent at the rodeo
grounds and throw the party
there.
Let's hope this happens.
* * *
Uncle Ben has done it again.
Ben Ginter, the Prince
George millionaire who wears
cowboy boots, has come up with
a new addition to the line of
beverages.produced at his Tartan
Brewery. This time it's malt
liquor — lighter than beer but
with a bit more kick, alcoholwise.
If s called "Uncle Ben'sMalt
Liquor" and the can even has
a protrait of Mr. Ginter sitting
in front of a waterfall.
If you recall, Ginter made
the breakthrough into canned
beer in Western Canada and the •
major breweries followed suit.
How long will it be until those
same breweries go into the malt ,
liquor business and the prices ,
go up again?
FESTIVAL OF SPORTS
One of the most important
things about the planned British
. Columbia Festival of Sports
is that every community of any
size in B.C. will benefit, says
the President of the B.C. Sports
Federation.
"It means that in towns large
and small right across the province,
amateur sports events of
some kind will be taking place
during the month of May," said
Dr. Robert C. Hindmarch.
"It is this local participation
that is so important if
we are really to develop the
potential of our young people
. and to encourage participation
by all'members of the community
in some form of recreational
endeavour."
Hindmarch was commenting
on an announcement by the Minister
of Travel Industry Kenneth
Kiernan, that an annual Festival
of Sports is to be held throughout
British Columbia starting in
May 1970 to encourage participation,
by British Columbians,
in all forms of sporting activity.
The Festival administration
will be financed through a grant
from the new Sport and Fitness
Fund set up by the government
during the last session of
the legislature. An estimated
$750,000 will be available annually,
from a S10 million fund,
to assist amateur sport and fitness.
Promotion of the Festival
will be done by the provincial
Department of Travel Industry.
Hindmarch said the B.C.
Sports Federation will have important
roles to play both in
the organization of the Festival
of Sports and in the distribution
of monies allocated under
the Sport and Physical Fitness
Fund.
"You could say that amateur
sport is at last coming of age
in this: province," he said.
"Hundreds of young people and
adults will benefit."
Hindmarch said the Festival
of Sports will give a tremendous
boost to the B.C. Sports
Federation as the co-ordinating
agency for amateur sport in
British Columbia.
"Now, at last, we have something
that we can get our teeth
into", he said. "While the
• Our lakes are quickly being
lost to us as recreational areas
and places of beauty because of
pollution.
This and other pollution problems
were discussed at the first
seminar on pollution held May
14, in the Helen Dixon Activity
Room. "
John McKelvie, who is very
concerned about local lakes said
that nothing was being done to
save them from pollution.
"Why has no action been taken
as a result of the letters which
I wrote over a year ago to the
local M.L.A. Bob Bonner?"
asked McKelvie.
"Never give up", answered
Dr. W. G. Meekison, Cariboo
Helath Officer and guest speaker
at the seminar. "Sometimes
pressure must be put upon the
government for results,'' he
added.
McKelvie said he felt that
first tiling should be treated
first, otherwise, there were so
many fine details to be done that
nothing was ever accomplished.
"It looks like a bunch of
people waiting for the government
to do something and the
government is waiting for the
people to do something and nothing
gets done," said McKelvie.
"I am concerned about the
farmers who have cattle feed
lots that extend to the water
front and use the lakes as a
fourth fence. Why are these
people not made to fence off
their property?" he asked.
Also criticized by McKelvie
were farmers who have creeks
running through cattle pens, and
into the lake, and waterfront
cottage owners who used the
.lake for sewage disposal.,Legislation
to control this should
be introduced, he added.
Because of a leak of money,
personel and time to make technological
A period of 'no-wind' could
Dr. W. G. Meekison, Cariboo
last week's pollution seminar
at Helen Dixon Auditorium that
there was definitely an air pollution
problem in the area just
north of Quesnel.
"Air pollution is a problem
of the cities and in this case
Quesnel is a city and has the
problems of a city," he said.
. Two Mile Flat is certainly
the No. 1 pollution problem in
the Cariboo right now,"he added.
Should we have an air inversion,
and this area is subject
to them, the problem would definitely
become a serious health
hazard, he added. This would
happen if there were a period
with'no wind. On the other hand,
a wind, while eliminating the
health hazard could create a
