BERLIN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENT
CHAPTER
The Berlin Institute of Technology Student Chapter engaged in
multiple activities throughout 2011, including a job symposium on
June 20. Four guest speakers gave interesting talks on their careers
and working possibilities in the human factors/ergonomics area:
Astrid Oehme (Human Factors Consult GmbH), Steffen Eßers (Apliki
GmbH & Co. KG), Christoph Möhlenbrink (Institute of Flight
Guidance of the German Aerospace Center), and Stefanie Eßers
(Takata AG). Chapter members were delighted that the event was
so well received (70 people attended). As a result of the success
of this event, further job symposia are intended for 2012.
Another goal achieved by the chapter in 2011 was the relaunch
of the Web site, which included new interactive content and information
about HF/E. The updated Web site has been attracting
more than 3,000 visitors each month.
The summer ceremony on July 15 marked the end of the summer
term and featured a short review of our first year as a new student
chapter and an opportunity to inform other students about
ongoing activities.
Given the fascination of aviation psychology and engineering,
20 students toured the Airbus factories in Hamburg on October
28 for National Ergonomics Month. The tour included a factory
inspection and a lecture on the topic of cabin and cargo HF/E highlighting
the company’s virtual reality environment and ending with
questions and discussions.
The Berlin Student Chapter looks forward to an exciting and
successful year in 2012 and hopes to dramatically increase membership.
The chapter would also like to thank HFES for its support!
The chapter consists of 17 students and 1 faculty member.
PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT
CHAPTER
The Penn State Student Chapter completed a number of successful
programs during 2011. In March, the 3rd Annual Bad Design
Competition solicited bad designs in the area of transportation.
Students turned in pictures and essays about poorly designed pedestrian
and motorist routes and other modes of transportation (elevators,
building hallways, cafeteria lines, etc.).
Over the summer the Design Committee conducted a study on
pedestrian behavior at one of the high-risk crosswalks identified
in a competition submission. In April, the chapter hosted a Human
Factors Research Forum, in which students from industrial engineering,
computer science, engineering design, earth and mineral sciences,
and mechanical engineering participated in a research poster
competition and seminar presentation.
In September, the chapter’s adviser hosted a welcome picnic for
returning and new members, offering a relaxed atmosphere for students
to meet each other and HF/E professors. To celebrate and promote
National Ergonomics Month, the chapter organized a tutorial
session at a local high school and presented an HF/E demonstration
to approximately 30 students.
World Usability Day was celebrated by a team of students participating
in the “Milking the Rhino” competition, a video and forum
contest to generate ideas to improve and sustain the lives of villagers
in Kenya and Namibia. The past year was filled with educational and
social activities aimed at improving the HF/E community at Penn
UNIVERSITY OF UTAH STUDENT CHAPTER
The chapter focused on advertising its existence in 2011 and
employed many techniques for inviting people to attend meetings.
All chapter meetings were advertised by posting flyers, sending
e-mails, and making announcements in relevant classes. Every meeting
saw new people join the chapter through these efforts. Another
attraction was a visit by Thomas Vanderbuilt, author of the New York
Times bestseller Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It
Says About Us). He spoke about his interests and about the contributions
of cognitive psychology research to applied settings.
Social activities were held to foster interaction among members.
At the end of the spring semester, the chapter held a party to meet
and greet other student members. Attendees played Wii games while
