Several <strong>chapter</strong> members <strong>and</strong> a faculty member took a field trip<br />

to the Center for <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Factors</strong> Engineering in Health Care, where<br />

Rollin (Terry) Fairbanks serves as director. Another highlight came<br />

at the 55th Annual Meeting when the <strong>chapter</strong> proudly received<br />

Outst<strong>and</strong>ing Student Chapter Award silver-level recognition.<br />

The <strong>chapter</strong> consists of 25 <strong>student</strong>s <strong>and</strong> 3 faculty members.<br />

UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO STUDENT CHAPTER<br />

During 2011, the University of Waterloo Student Chapter concentrated<br />

its efforts on increasing membership <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong>ing the<br />

reach of its activities throughout the campus. Members hosted a<br />

few invited talks <strong>and</strong> social events to promote the expansion <strong>and</strong><br />

dissemination of HF/E knowledge. Members also represented the<br />

U. of Waterloo at the 55th Annual Meeting in Las Vegas <strong>and</strong> the<br />

2011 <strong>Human</strong> <strong>Factors</strong> Inter-University Workshop in Buffalo.<br />

The goal of the <strong>chapter</strong>-hosted talks was to foster engagement<br />

from the audience <strong>and</strong> promote interaction between <strong>student</strong> members<br />

<strong>and</strong> prominent researchers. Speakers included Lisette van<br />

Gemert <strong>and</strong> Nienke Nijhof (eHealth Research Centre, U. of Twente)<br />

<strong>and</strong> Mathias Gorges (Electrical & Computer Engineering in<br />

Medicine Research, U. of British Columbia).<br />

The <strong>chapter</strong> consists of 43 <strong>student</strong>s <strong>and</strong> 4 faculty members.<br />

UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON STUDENT<br />

CHAPTER<br />

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Student Chapter held<br />

many events in 2011, beginning with a kickoff meeting to introduce<br />

the organization to <strong>student</strong>s on campus. A happy hour was<br />

held at a local restaurant for members to network in an informal setting.<br />

To engage incoming industrial <strong>and</strong> systems engineering (ISyE)<br />

freshman, members gave a presentation during an Introduction to<br />

Industrial Engineering class to introduce <strong>student</strong>s to HFES <strong>and</strong><br />

describe membership benefits <strong>and</strong> planned activities. Two guest<br />

speakers gave presentations during the spring semester: Ji Soo Yi<br />

(Purdue U.) spoke about information visualization, <strong>and</strong> Donald<br />

Fisher (U. of Massachusetts Amherst) visited campus <strong>and</strong> talked<br />

about his research on transportation safety. The semester concluded<br />

with a coffee-break presentation by an outgoing PhD <strong>student</strong>,<br />

who gave tips on applying for positions in academia.<br />

Over the summer, members attended a meeting of the Chicago<br />

Metropolitan Chapter to network with other HF/E professionals <strong>and</strong><br />

to learn more about work at Abbott Labs. The <strong>chapter</strong> hosted an<br />
