Several chapter members and a faculty member took a field trip to the Center for Human Factors Engineering in Health Care, where Rollin (Terry) Fairbanks serves as director. Another highlight came at the 55th Annual Meeting when the chapter proudly received Outstanding Student Chapter Award silver-level recognition. UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO STUDENT CHAPTER During 2011, the University of Waterloo Student Chapter concentrated its efforts on increasing membership and expanding the reach of its activities throughout the campus. Members hosted a few invited talks and social events to promote the expansion and dissemination of HF/E knowledge. Members also represented the U. of Waterloo at the 55th Annual Meeting in Las Vegas and the 2011 Human Factors Inter-University Workshop in Buffalo. The goal of the chapter-hosted talks was to foster engagement from the audience and promote interaction between student members and prominent researchers. Speakers included Lisette van Gemert and Nienke Nijhof (eHealth Research Centre, U. of Twente) and Mathias Gorges (Electrical & Computer Engineering in Medicine Research, U. of British Columbia). The chapter consists of 43 students and 4 faculty members. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON STUDENT CHAPTER The University of Wisconsin-Madison Student Chapter held many events in 2011, beginning with a kickoff meeting to introduce the organization to students on campus. A happy hour was held at a local restaurant for members to network in an informal setting. To engage incoming industrial and systems engineering (ISyE) freshman, members gave a presentation during an Introduction to Industrial Engineering class to introduce students to HFES and describe membership benefits and planned activities. Two guest speakers gave presentations during the spring semester: Ji Soo Yi (Purdue U.) spoke about information visualization, and Donald Fisher (U. of Massachusetts Amherst) visited campus and talked about his research on transportation safety. The semester concluded with a coffee-break presentation by an outgoing PhD student, who gave tips on applying for positions in academia. Over the summer, members attended a meeting of the Chicago Metropolitan Chapter to network with other HF/E professionals and to learn more about work at Abbott Labs. event with the Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity (PEOPLE) program and interacted with middle- and high-school girls to engage their interest in engineering. Members gave a presentation during the Engineering Summer Program to expose high-school juniors and seniors to the fields of industrial engineering and human factors/ ergonomics. The fall semester began with hosting a booth during the UW-Madison Student Activities Fair to attract more undergraduate students. Shortly thereafter, the fall kickoff meeting enabled undergraduates, faculty, and alumni to interact in lively discussion and an ice-breaker game. During the 2011 Annual Meeting, members attended the annual student/faculty/alumni UW-Dinner. After the Annual Meeting, the chapter created an annual HFES Bad Design Competition in collaboration with the Introduction to Human Factors course and announced it during National Ergonomics Month. A T-shirt design contest gave students the opportunity to create a shirt for the entire Industrial and Systems Engineering Department. In November, members hosted a booth during the ISyE Advising Day to expose more students to the field and to allow undergraduates to question graduate students about typical HF/E academic paths. In addition, Paul Micheli, an interaction designer at Pharmacy OneSource, visited and talked about interaction design in health care and job opportunities at Pharmacy OneSource. In addition to chapter events, members created a new Web site to announce events, host photo albums, and allow members to post on the chapter discussion board. This chapter consists of 18 students and 1 faculty. VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE AND STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER The Virginia Tech Student Chapter was very active in 2011. Student interest in professional development, current research, and career opportunities was galvanized by several seminars with speakers, including Miranda Capra (HumanCentric), Enid Montague (U. of Wisconsin), Steven Feldman (Wake Forest U.), Christopher Brill (Old Dominion U.), David Kaber (North Carolina State U.), Jose Bauermeister (U. of Michigan), Frank Buczek, Jr. (NIOSH), and Christian Johnson (GE). The chapter also helped to organize lab tours for new students and visitors and provided human factors–related activities for a Kids Tech event for high-school students. Members organized social and service activities including an alumni dinner at the 2011 Annual Meeting, socials with graduate recruits, a chapter movie night, a potluck dinner, a spring picnic, several happy hours in the summer, and a holiday party. The chapter also provided a mentorship program to match new students with current HF/E students. Tours were held at the Smart Road at Virginia Tech Transportation Institute and 94 Ralph H.
