The chapter’s NEM celebration concluded with a field trip to the Holleman-Niswonger Simulator Facility at Purdue Airport, where members observed the power of simulation technology for training pilots and facilitating experiments in aviation human factors. SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER The SJSU Student Chapter hosted a number of events during the year, including invited talks, field trips, and socials. The first tour of the year was to the Electronic Arts campus in Redwood City (also known as EA Games). Attendees saw the facilities and heard a history of the company, then a games user-experience researcher gave a tour of the labs and described how usability testing is conducted. Chapter members also had the opportunity to visit the LinkedIn and Google facilities in Mountain View. The chapter hosted its first large-scale event and invited students and alumni to attend the First SJSU Human Factors and Ergonomics Alumni Symposium. Speakers included Jamie Kravitz, Cassy Rowe, Jeff English, Shima Kazerooni, and Brent White, who gave presentations on such topics as mobile design and eye tracking. The event ended with a Q&A panel with alumni. A highlight of the year was attending the 2011 Annual Meeting in Las Vegas and being part of the Host Committee, which opened up opportunities such as developing the daily newsletter and hosting the Student Lounge. For National Ergonomics Month, the chapter hosted Amy Breaux, an SJSU HF/E alumna who spoke about her recent ergonomics consulting projects with VSI Risk Management, and Dan Kelso, a professional ergonomist who works for Apple. The chapter held a number of social events, including beginningand end-of-semester events, a “welcome back” summer barbecue, and a holiday party including dinner and bowling. TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER In 2011, the Texas Tech Student Chapter was very active. Members traveled to Houston for a one-day conference, where many of them gave presentations. Members attended a design conference, “Big gifts, deep needs,” to learn about the benefits of pro bono design from presenters John Carry and Courtney Martin (author and editor, respectively, of Feministing.com). The chapter participated in Texas Tech’s celebration of Arbor Day by helping to plant flowers across campus and joined in a Red Cross-sponsored event to raise money for the people of Japan who were affected by the 2011 tsunami. On October 17, Adam Probst (Office of Patient Safety, Baylor Health Care System) presented a talk about the impact of HF/E in health-care. Following his visit the chapter arranged a tour of the state-of-the-art Health Science Center at Texas Tech. To wrap up 2011, the chapter set up lab tours in the Industrial Engineering and Psychology Departments, which enabled students to present their work to their peers and to learn about the work of other students. TUFTS UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER During National Ergonomics Month, the Tufts University Student Chapter hosted an alumni speaker, Blade Kotelly, who talked about the process of design. This event was attended by both members of the chapter and by freshmen and sophomore students in the Introduction to Engineering Psychology program. This event was a great opportunity to promote interest in human factors to undergraduates who have not yet selected their major. The chapter also held a Collegian-Alum Networking Dinner in which the current job market was discussed. Alumni from different companies gave advice and guidance to undergraduates at this wellattended event. Members went on an overnight retreat to Cape Cod, where they discussed issues with user interfaces and the pros and cons of various software, and had a chance to bond in a nonacademic setting. Working with the Tufts Career Services office, the chapter created a résumé booklet for distribution to local companies seeking interns and employees, which was very successful.
