Homework
Tips
Kids have to go to school all day and learn
according to a schedule and then they come
home and all they really want to do is relax and
have fun. Homework is something that a lot of
kids have problems with, after all it does infringe
on their free playtime. It can also be hard for
parents as they try and get them to settle down
to doing it after a long day at school. There are
a couple of things parents can do that may help:
After school snack: Have a healthy snack your
child can have when they are picked up from
school, kids can be tired and hungry after
school and something to eat can get the
afternoon off to a good start. For example some
fruit or crackers and cheese, peanut butter on
whole grain bread (sunflower seed butter or
hummus would be an alternative for those with
allergies) . If they attend after school care and a
snack is not provided then be sure to give you
child an extra snack in their bag that they can
eat. Sweets are not a good idea as due to the
high sugar content it may give them energy for
a while but it is used up quickly and they may
then have a sugar slump which won’t help
energy levels for homework.
Quiet place: Pick a quiet place for homework
away from the distraction of tv, computers or
radio. For younger children it may be that they
will need to sit at the kitchen table while a
parent helps them and/or if a parent needs to
make dinner but still needs to be available to
help the child.
Time: Many children find working for extended
lengths of time difficult and they can get tired
and distracted. Set your child a time to spend
on a page of homework, maybe using a sand
timer or kitchen clock. They can see the start
and end time and
this gives them
something to work
towards.
Print some ‘Break
Tickets’: A break
ticket is exactly
what it says, it is a
ticket you can give
your child that they
can use at any time
during the 15 mins
(or whatever the
time you decide is)
to take a break from
homework. They
give you the ticket,
take their 5 min
break (again you
decide the time) and
