Foreword<br />

An ancient Greek myth tells the story of King Sisyphus.<br />

The king was sentenced by “the gods” to roll a stone up a hill<br />

forever. Each time he got near the top of the hill, the stone<br />

rolled back down to the bottom and he was required to start<br />

over again rolling the stone back to the top of the hill. No matter<br />

how long or how hard he worked at the project, he was<br />

doomed to failure.<br />

Albert Camus, the French existentialist, claimed that all of<br />

life is just like that: futile and pointless. We work and think that<br />

we have goals, but we are doomed to lives of futility. About one<br />

hundred twenty-five years before Camus, the American Henry<br />

David Thoreau said that most men live lives of quiet desperation.<br />

Even William Shakespeare, in the sixteenth and early seventeenth<br />

century, claimed that life was a “tale told by an idiot,<br />

full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”<br />

Is there a <strong>Christian</strong> response to this pessimistic world view?<br />

Can the <strong>Christian</strong> supply a positive answer to those who seek<br />

purpose and meaning in life? The answer should be a wholehearted<br />

“yes!” But, sadly, many <strong>Christian</strong>s act and think as<br />

though life were governed by chance or luck rather than by the<br />

sovereign Creator-God of the universe. It is not simply that we<br />
