ALTHOUGH THE public meeting last
Wednesday night offered a fine opportunity
for people to vent their frustrations and ex^
press their concerns, it did little to answer
some ojf the more difficult" questions that remain
about the controversial Place St. Laurent
development.
And, to be quite frank, the event didn't
seem to be structured to do that.
Although the 600 or so residents who
came out to the meeting were given free reign
to express their outrage and concern - or, in a
very few cases,, their support - those at the
centre of the controversy. Mayor Wallace and
council, were originally going to get exactly
the same three minutes to respond to the flurry
of allegations and questions as everybody
else.
Fortunately, moderator Ron Campbell
had the good sense to bow to the will of the
meeting and allow Wallace a bit more time to
make his case. Still, love it or hate it, Wallace^'s
submission provided at best a mere
thumbnail sketch of the situation.
It's pretty hard to have a civilized debate
in a venue such as was evident at the Legion
that night, so we won't be too hard on the organizers.
They didn't know how many people
would show up and they did the best they
could to cope. Still, besides whipping up opposition
to the PSL development, it doesn't
appear that much was accomplished.
We can probably expect, some .real an=—
swers when the Parks report is released in the
next couple of weeks. Then, and only then,
will we be dealing with all the facts about
what happened here. At that point, we should
be able to have an intelligent debate about
where to go from here.
IT IS encouraging indeed to see the wide
variety of political parties and independents
lining up to contest the looming provincial
election in this riding.
Democracy is only strengthened when
there is a solid level of participation on both
sides of the ballot box - those who are voting
and those who are running.
Quite apart from this^ we are also pleased
to see that this coming vote will not be a cookie-cutter
copy of the last election.
Is there anyone'else out there who wants
to run?

bringing us the bills, I
thought it might be timely
to do a couple of articles
on money and its implications
in our lives.

BACK BY popular demand, Streetnix is scheduled
to perform at the Seniors' Gentre on February 9, 2001.
The Quesnel Children's Concert Society have once
again landed this excellent a cappeila ensemble for the
entertainment of Quesnel audiences.
For those few who are not familiar with the fourmember
band, Streetnix hales from Saskatoon, Saskatchewani
but have expanded their notoriety around the
world.

their credit, Streetnix uses cutting-edge technology and
