ALTHOUGH THE public meeting last
Wednesday night offered a fine opportunity
for people to vent their frustrations and ex^
press their concerns, it did little to answer
some ojf the more difficult" questions that remain
about the controversial Place St. Laurent
development.
And, to be quite frank, the event didn't
seem to be structured to do that.
Although the 600 or so residents who
came out to the meeting were given free reign
to express their outrage and concern - or, in a
very few cases,, their support - those at the
centre of the controversy. Mayor Wallace and
council, were originally going to get exactly
the same three minutes to respond to the flurry
of allegations and questions as everybody
else.
Fortunately, moderator Ron Campbell
had the good sense to bow to the will of the
meeting and allow Wallace a bit more time to
make his case. Still, love it or hate it, Wallace^'s
submission provided at best a mere
thumbnail sketch of the situation.
It's pretty hard to have a civilized debate
in a venue such as was evident at the Legion
that night, so we won't be too hard on the organizers.
They didn't know how many people
would show up and they did the best they
could to cope. Still, besides whipping up opposition
to the PSL development, it doesn't
appear that much was accomplished.
We can probably expect, some .real an=—
swers when the Parks report is released in the
next couple of weeks. Then, and only then,
will we be dealing with all the facts about
what happened here. At that point, we should
be able to have an intelligent debate about
where to go from here.
IT IS encouraging indeed to see the wide
variety of political parties and independents
lining up to contest the looming provincial
election in this riding.
Democracy is only strengthened when
there is a solid level of participation on both
sides of the ballot box - those who are voting
and those who are running.
Quite apart from this^ we are also pleased
to see that this coming vote will not be a cookie-cutter
copy of the last election.
Is there anyone'else out there who wants
to run?
MONEY, MONEY
money. Now that we have
purchased some Christmas
thrills and the mail is
bringing us the bills, I
thought it might be timely
to do a couple of articles
on money and its implications
in our lives.
One quote I read
said: "Money is a terrible
master^ but a great
servant."
So the question to
pose is what is money to
you and I - a masteror a
servant.'
Money becomes our
master when we do not
have control over it, but
rather we let it control us.
How ;.: we hand 1 e our
money affects our lives
Ohen we believe thatrnoney
is the answer. .We
think that if we just had.
more money our problems
would disappear.
This is not true^ considering
the fact that riches
don't help thejwealthy to
be better people.
I can: receive money,
: but it will not make me a
better person. Likewise, if
I give presents to some
one,- they won't help
make that person, better.
Indeed, if he likes the gift
1 give he will be appreciative
and sweetei-, but it.
will only be for a short.
^ Seneca, the Roman
"Money has never yet
. Considering these
truths, why have we let
money be our master.'
The one way you
know money is your master
when you are up to
your ears in debt.
The subject of finances
is also a cause of
many marriage conflicts.
Many times it is not "till
It is my encouragement
today to make you
YOUR BIRTHDAY
Wednesday, January 31,2001
What fires up your ambitions in the year ahead is your
sincere desire to provide more for those in love. This
noble motivation will contribute to a-lot of success.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) Although you may have
all kinds of grandiose plans for today, it isn't likely
you'll accomplish much. You could scatter your forces to
the point where you'lf start a lot but finish nothing.
Aquarius, treat yourself to a birthday gift. Send for your
Astro-Graph predictions for the year ahead by mailing
$2 and SASE to Astro-Graph, cVo The Quesnel Cariboo
Observer, P.O. Box 1758, Muitay Hill Station, New
York, NY 10156. Be sure to state your Zodiac sign.
PISCES (Feb. 20^Mar. 20) If you persist in visualizing
obstacles instead of solutions, that marvelous
imagination of yours will work against you today. You'll
find what you envision.
ARIES (March 21-Apra 19) It may be all too easy
today for an acquaintance who has a convincing tale of
woe to impose upon your generous nature. Check out the
truth before opening your wallet.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Don't make any moves
that are not in line with your highest standards and ideals
today, because you will be closely scrutinized by those
who can't wait to trip you up,
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Uncharacteristically, you
might think you're making aU the sacrifices today while
others are reaping all the gains. Don't start feeling sorry
for yourself: It solves nothing.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) If you're too much a
pushover today, sentiment could become hard on your
purse. Emotion should not be allowed to rule how you
handle your financial resources.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) A smooth-talking character
could confuse the issues today in order to attetnpt to get
you'to think as she or he wants you to. Don't be too
easily swayed by others. Think for yourself
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Tend to all your hard jobs
first today and get them out of the way eariy. If you
don't, they will hang over your head, threatening to put a
noose around your neck.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) You're such a nice person
that you can easily become hoodwinked into believing
something is so when it isn't. Be careful today that
you're not ripped off
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) There will be tirijeflimrts
on people's willingness to help you today, so once you
get a nod from someone, don't drag your feet. Get on it
pronto.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov, 23-Dec. 21) Just because you're
very perceptive and can easily see the faults in others
doesn't mean you have to share what you know with
.other|i. today. Keep your critiques to yourself
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Don't kid yourself
into believing you need something immediately when
you really don't: These Spendthrift urges can create all
kinds of financial complications for you today:
