The creation of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes (Royal Academy of F<strong>in</strong>e<br />
Arts) was first promoted by Felipe V <strong>in</strong> 1744, but it was his son, Fernando VI,<br />
who signed the Royal Decree of Foundation <strong>in</strong> 1752 for the perfection and<br />
study of the noble arts of pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g, sculpture and architecture. It was built<br />
between 1724 and 1725 by architect José Benito Churriguera as a palatial<br />
home for the banker Juan de Goyeneche. It was refurbished and improved<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1773 by Diego de Villanueva to house the Academy. The museum houses<br />
an important collection of pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>gs (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g 13 works by Goya), sculpture<br />
and other works of art from a variety of different European schools.<br />

Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted.<br />
One member of the customer service staff has any knowledge of Spanish Sign<br />
Language (SSL).<br />
GUIDED TOURS<br />
Public guided tours with limited places take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and<br />
Fridays at 11:00. Tours do not take place <strong>in</strong> August.<br />
Guided tours for groups can be arranged with prior notice.<br />
