92 THE CASUARINA TREE<br />

for what purpose it was called <strong>and</strong> at <strong>the</strong> appointed<br />

hour <strong>the</strong>y assembled. They were more cheerful than<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had been for a week <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y chattered with a<br />

gaiety which was <strong>on</strong>ly subdued by a mannerly reserve.<br />

The c<strong>on</strong>sul, an, eye-g<strong>la</strong>ss in his eye, said that<br />

he had gat<strong>her</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>m toget<strong>her</strong> to discuss <strong>the</strong> questi<strong>on</strong><br />

of <strong>the</strong> fancy-dress ball <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> following day.<br />

He knew <strong>the</strong>y all had <strong>the</strong> deepest sympathy for<br />

Mr. Gal<strong>la</strong>g<strong>her</strong> <strong>and</strong> he would have proposed that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y should combine to send an appropriate message<br />

to <strong>the</strong> deceased's re<strong>la</strong>tives; but his papers had been<br />

examined by <strong>the</strong> purser <strong>and</strong> no trace could be found<br />

::1 of any re<strong>la</strong>tive or friend with whom it was possible<br />

j<br />

to communicate. The <strong>la</strong>te Mr. Gal<strong>la</strong>g<strong>her</strong> appeared<br />

to be quite al<strong>on</strong>e in <strong>the</strong> world. Meanwhile he (<strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>sul) ventured to offer his sincere sympathy to <strong>the</strong><br />

I<br />

doctor who, he was quite sure, had d<strong>on</strong>e everything<br />

that was possible in <strong>the</strong> circumstances.<br />

"Hear, hear," said <strong>the</strong> passengers.<br />

They had all passed through a very trying time,<br />

proceeded <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sul, <strong>and</strong> to some it might seem that<br />

it would be more respectful to <strong>the</strong> deceased's memory<br />

if <strong>the</strong> fancy-dress ball were postp<strong>on</strong>ed till New<br />

Year's eve. This, however, he told <strong>the</strong>m frankly<br />

was not his view, <strong>and</strong> he was c<strong>on</strong>vinced that Mr. Gal<strong>la</strong>g<strong>her</strong><br />

himself would not have wished it. Of course.<br />

Ii it was a questi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> majority to decide. The<br />

i<br />

doctor got up <strong>and</strong> thanked <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sul <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> passen<br />

<strong>on</strong> Christmas day as though nothing had happened.<br />

He (<strong>the</strong> doctor) told <strong>the</strong>m in c<strong>on</strong>fidence that <strong>the</strong><br />

captain felt <strong>the</strong> passengers had got into a rat<strong>her</strong> morbid<br />

state <strong>and</strong> thought it would do <strong>the</strong>m all good if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had a jolly good time <strong>on</strong> Christmas day. Then<br />

<strong>the</strong> missi<strong>on</strong>ary's wife rose <strong>and</strong> said <strong>the</strong>y mustn't think<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly of <strong>the</strong>mselves; it had been arranged by <strong>the</strong> Entertainment<br />

Committee that t<strong>her</strong>e should be a<br />

Christmas tree for <strong>the</strong> children immediately after<br />

<strong>the</strong> first-c<strong>la</strong>ss passengers' dinner, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> children<br />

had been looking forward to seeing every<strong>on</strong>e in<br />

fancy dress; it would be too bad to disappoint <strong>the</strong>m;<br />

she yielded to no <strong>on</strong>e in <strong>her</strong> respect for <strong>the</strong> dead <strong>and</strong><br />

she sympathised with any<strong>on</strong>e who felt too sad to<br />

think of dancing just <strong>the</strong>n. Her own heart was very<br />

heavy, but she did feel it would be merely selfish to<br />

give way to a feeling which could do no good to any<br />

<strong>on</strong>e. Let <strong>the</strong>m think of <strong>the</strong> little <strong>on</strong>es. This very<br />

much impressed <strong>the</strong> passengers. They wanted to<br />

forget <strong>the</strong> brooding terror which had hung over <strong>the</strong><br />

boat for so many days, <strong>the</strong>y were alive <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />

wanted to enjoy <strong>the</strong>mselves; but <strong>the</strong>y had an uneasy<br />

noti<strong>on</strong> that it would be decent to exhibit a certain<br />

grief. It was quite anot<strong>her</strong> matter if <strong>the</strong>y could do<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y wished from altruistic motives. When <strong>the</strong><br />

II c<strong>on</strong>sul called for a show of h<strong>and</strong>s every<strong>on</strong>e, but<br />

Mrs. Hamlyn <strong>and</strong> <strong>on</strong>e old <strong>la</strong>dy who was rheumatic,<br />

r\ held up an eager arm.<br />

"The ayes have it," said <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sul. "And I venture<br />

to c<strong>on</strong>gratu<strong>la</strong>te <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>on</strong> a very sensible<br />

decisi <strong>on</strong>."<br />

It was just going to break up when <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong><br />
