<strong>Georgia</strong> Southern <strong>University</strong> invites nominations and applications for the position <strong>of</strong> Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Political Science with an emphasis in justice studies. <strong>Georgia</strong> Southern <strong>University</strong><br />

(www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>System</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong> and a Carnegie<br />

Doctoral/Research <strong>University</strong>, is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>Georgia</strong>’s premier universities. A residential university serving<br />

nearly 20,000 students in fall 2010, <strong>Georgia</strong> Southern is recognized for providing all <strong>of</strong> the benefits <strong>of</strong> a<br />

major university with the feeling <strong>of</strong> a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers more<br />

than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels<br />

through eight colleges. In 2011, <strong>Georgia</strong> Southern was named the fourth most popular university in the<br />

country in the U.S. News & World Report's "Top 20 Most Popular Universities." The nearly 700 acre<br />

park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and<br />

Hilton Head Island.<br />

Within this setting, the Justice Studies Program is an interdisciplinary program that provides a<br />

comprehensive examination <strong>of</strong> justice, crime, and the law. The program <strong>of</strong>fers a bachelor’s degree<br />

(B.S.J.S) and enrolls over 350 majors. The Department <strong>of</strong> Political Science also houses degrees in<br />

Political Science and Public Administration. Graduate level teaching in the Master <strong>of</strong> Public<br />

Administration or the interdisciplinary Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Social Science program is expected.<br />

Position Description. Reporting to the chair, the Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Political Science with an emphasis<br />

in justice studies position requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities as well as a terminal<br />

degree. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a variety <strong>of</strong> required and elective courses in the<br />

Justice Studies program and an occasional graduate course. He/she will also be expected to advise<br />

students and assist in the governance <strong>of</strong> the program as well as pursue an active research agenda. The<br />

position is a 9-month tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with<br />

qualifications and experience.<br />

Required Qualifications:<br />

• Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Justice Studies, Criminology, Political Science, Sociology, or related<br />

field by August 1, 2012<br />

• Some teaching experience<br />

• Commitment to excellence in teaching and research<br />

• Effective communication skills<br />

Preferred Qualifications:<br />

• The field <strong>of</strong> specialization within Criminal Justice is open; however, teaching and/or research<br />

interests in violence, victimology, juvenile delinquency, issues <strong>of</strong> crime and justice, community<br />

and rural justice, and/or criminal justice policy are preferred<br />

• Ability to teach graduate and undergraduate research methods<br />

• Active research agenda and record or willingness to engage in funded and applied research<br />

Screening <strong>of</strong> applications begins October 15, 2011, and continues until the position is filled. The position<br />

starting date is August 1, 2012. A complete application consists <strong>of</strong> a letter addressing the qualifications<br />

teaching evaluations and sample syllabi; and three letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation. Other documentation may<br />
