The more than 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Streetcommunity near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.Within this setting, the Department of Writing and Linguistics—comprised of Creative Writing,Professional and Technical Writing, Linguistics, and Writing Studies—offers the Bachelor of Arts inWriting and Linguistics and is responsible for the delivery of First-Year Writing and for some English asa Second Language courses. The Department also offers a Minor, an Interdisciplinary Minor, and anInterdisciplinary Concentration in Linguistics. It plans to offer an online graduate certificate inTESOL/Applied Linguistics starting fall 2013. In addition, the Department is an active participant in theOnline Bachelor of General Studies program housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.Writing and Linguistics is home to the University Writing Center and the Georgia Southern WritingProject, a site of the National Writing Project. The Department hosts the annual Student Success inWriting Conference and co-hosts the Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy. In 2012,the Department hosted the international Writing Across the Curriculum Conference and in 2013 will hostthe annual conference of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The ideal candidate willcontribute to the growth and development of the Linguistics area and to the online graduate certificate inTESOL/Applied Linguistics, along with other Department programs and activities.Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Writing and Linguistics, the AssistantProfessor of Writing and Linguistics position requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities aswell as a terminal degree. The successful candidate will teach three courses per semester with primaryassignment in ESL and Applied Linguistics (second language teaching and learning; English as anInternational Language). This candidate is able and willing to teach graduate and undergraduate coursesin Applied Linguistics as well as First-Year Writing. S/he is expected to advise students in the Writing &Linguistics major, the linguistics minor, and the graduate online certificate in TESOL/AppliedLinguistics. Peer-reviewed research publications are to be delivered in accordance with the standards ofthe College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences to obtain at least ‘research-active’ classification. Serviceon university committees is to be performed commensurate with the expectations of academic rank. Theposition is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate withqualifications and experience.Required Qualifications:• Earned doctorate in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or Linguistics by August 1, 2013• Scholarly agenda in the area of TESOL/Applied Linguistics

• At least one year of part-time college-level teaching experience (graduate assistant teachingexperience is permissible)Preferred Qualifications:• Evidence of demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level or two or more years ofcollege-level teaching• Peer-reviewed publications in TESOL/Applied Linguistics or Linguistics• Experience developing and teaching online courses and programs• Experience teaching first-year writing• Experience teaching English in an international context, preferably outside the U.S.A. and anglophoneCanadaScreening of applications begins October 1, 2012, and continues until the position is filled.
