A residential university serving more than 20,000 students, <strong>Georgia</strong>Southern is recognized for providing all <strong>of</strong> the benefits <strong>of</strong> a major university with the feeling <strong>of</strong> a muchsmaller college. Founded in 1906, the University <strong>of</strong>fers more than 100 campus-based <strong>and</strong> online degreeprograms at the baccalaureate, master’s, <strong>and</strong> doctoral levels through eight colleges. In 2012, <strong>Georgia</strong>Southern was named one <strong>of</strong> the top 10 most popular universities in the country by U.S. News & WorldReport. The more than 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Streetcommunity near historic Savannah <strong>and</strong> Hilton Head Isl<strong>and</strong>.Within this setting, the Department <strong>of</strong> Writing <strong>and</strong> Linguistics—comprised <strong>of</strong> Creative Writing,Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>and</strong> Technical Writing, Linguistics, <strong>and</strong> Writing Studies—<strong>of</strong>fers the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> inWriting <strong>and</strong> Linguistics <strong>and</strong> is responsible for the delivery <strong>of</strong> First-Year Writing <strong>and</strong> for some English asa Second Language courses. The Department also <strong>of</strong>fers a Minor, an Interdisciplinary Minor, <strong>and</strong> anInterdisciplinary Concentration in Linguistics. It plans to <strong>of</strong>fer an online graduate certificate inTESOL/Applied Linguistics starting fall 2013. In addition, the Department is an active participant in theOnline Bachelor <strong>of</strong> General Studies program housed in the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Liberal</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>.Writing <strong>and</strong> Linguistics is home to the University Writing Center <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Georgia</strong> Southern WritingProject, a site <strong>of</strong> the National Writing Project. The Department hosts the annual Student Success inWriting Conference <strong>and</strong> co-hosts the <strong>Georgia</strong> International Conference on Information Literacy. In 2012,the Department hosted the international Writing Across the Curriculum Conference <strong>and</strong> in 2013 will hostthe annual conference <strong>of</strong> the Council <strong>of</strong> Writing Program Administrators. The ideal c<strong>and</strong>idate willcontribute to the growth <strong>and</strong> development <strong>of</strong> the Linguistics area <strong>and</strong> to the online graduate certificate inTESOL/Applied Linguistics, along with other Department programs <strong>and</strong> activities.Position Description. Reporting to the Chair <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Writing <strong>and</strong> Linguistics, the AssistantPr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Writing <strong>and</strong> Linguistics position requires teaching, service, <strong>and</strong> research responsibilities aswell as a terminal degree. The successful c<strong>and</strong>idate will teach three courses per semester with primaryassignment in ESL <strong>and</strong> Applied Linguistics (second language teaching <strong>and</strong> learning; English as anInternational Language). This c<strong>and</strong>idate is able <strong>and</strong> willing to teach graduate <strong>and</strong> undergraduate coursesin Applied Linguistics as well as First-Year Writing. S/he is expected to advise students in the Writing &Linguistics major, the linguistics minor, <strong>and</strong> the graduate online certificate in TESOL/AppliedLinguistics. Peer-reviewed research publications are to be delivered in accordance with the st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>of</strong>the <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Liberal</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> to obtain at least ‘research-active’ classification. Serviceon university committees is to be performed commensurate with the expectations <strong>of</strong> academic rank. Theposition is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment, <strong>and</strong> the salary is competitive <strong>and</strong> commensurate withqualifications <strong>and</strong> experience.Required Qualifications:• Earned doctorate in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or Linguistics by August 1, 2013• Scholarly agenda in the area <strong>of</strong> TESOL/Applied Linguistics
• At least one year <strong>of</strong> part-time college-level teaching experience (graduate assistant teachingexperience is permissible)Preferred Qualifications:• Evidence <strong>of</strong> demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level or two or more years <strong>of</strong>college-level teaching• Peer-reviewed publications in TESOL/Applied Linguistics or Linguistics• Experience developing <strong>and</strong> teaching online courses <strong>and</strong> programs• Experience teaching first-year writing• Experience teaching English in an international context, preferably outside the U.S.A. <strong>and</strong> anglophoneCanadaScreening <strong>of</strong> applications begins October 1, 2012, <strong>and</strong> continues until the position is filled.
