Fairtrade Directory Asense of community has been central to The Co-operative since we started in 1844. Our support for UK communities now takes many forms – from investing in local community projects and local membership events to backing local cooperatives, such as co-operative schools. The Community Fund is our grant scheme that helps local communities throughout the UK. Since we started the initiative in 1997, thousands of clubs, community groups and self-help organisations have benefi ted. Fairtrade Directory Community Fund Awards in County Durham The past year has seen over 50 community groups receive support from The Co-operative Membership Community Fund. These have included: Over £30,000 has been given out by the Co-operative Community fund in the past 12 months throughout County Durham. Recipients have ranged from rugby teams to play groups and youth clubs to brass bands. Peterlee Pumas, Peterlee Given £850. This rugby league club have male junior teams, a female team and hold regular ‘touch rugby’ sessions. Based in an area of high deprivation the club exists to encourage emotional and physical well being among children and young adults. Phoenix Funsters, Hartlepool Given £690. The group promotes active citizenship, working with young people to carry out community activities and volunteering opportunities. The group have a wildlife pond and vegetable plots within a local farm. 15
