‘Fairtrade’ applies to goods with the FAIRTRADE
Mark. Ethically sourced goods that don’t carry the
Mark are described as being ‘fairly traded’.
Some products cannot carry the FAIRTRADE
Mark, as no agreed criteria exist for them. These
fairly traded products include handicrafts, paper,
soapstone, wood and metal items. It is best to buy
such items from BAFTS registered shops (British
Association for Fair Trade Shops) as they vet their
suppliers. This Directory lists some BAFTS shops/
outlets using BAFTS suppliers to help you.
Dear Reader
Cllr Neil Foster
3 Monmouth Place, Bath BA1 2AT
www.socialpublishingproject.com
It is my great pleasure
to welcome you to
the second County
Durham Fairtrade
Directory, which has
been produced thanks
to the collaboration
of the Durham Cooperative
Membership
Committee, Durham
County Council and
Durham City Fair
Trade Partnership.
As well as articles about Co-
operative Membership activities and local Fairtrade matters, this edition
brings you a whole host of cafes, shops, independent local retailers,
restaurants, museums and attractions who are proud to serve or sell
products with the FAIRTRADE Mark.
In less than 20 years, there are now over 4,500 products with the
FAIRTRADE Mark. This certifi cation is your guarantee that each product
has been independently verifi ed by the Fairtrade Foundation, and gives
a better deal to marginalised producers in developing countries.
This Directory also lists outlets where fairly-traded goods such
as handicrafts, paper and household items can be found, which are
outside the current guidelines of the FAIRTRADE Mark. I do hope that
you enjoy this publication and will join us in supporting Fairtrade within
County Durham. Look out for our mobile website which will be available
soon to bring you all this information at your fi ngertips!
Cllr Neil Foster
PLEASE NOTE: Every effort has been made to ensure that entries in this Directory are accurate,
however, we cannot guarantee that all information is correct. We recommend that you contact the
establishment beforehand to check details of products held. A listing in this Directory is not an
endorsement of that establishment by Co-operative Membership or Durham County Council.
