MONEY MATTERS
Community will be asked
to Determine Level of
Programming and
Services for Lake
“Do you support the continued reduction of staffing
and programs or do you support passing an operating
issue to continue to serve our students at our current
levels?” That is the question that will be asked of the
community as the district plans for 2013 and beyond.
The preliminary district budget is approximately
$28.4M. Anticipated revenue for this fiscal year is
$28.2M. With costs for almost all budgetary items
expected to increase substantially in the near future,
the deficit spending pattern will increase dramatically
from year to year. The district is prepared to continue
to reduce programming and services if the community
does not support additional operating revenue.
Preliminary recommendations may include reduction
or elimination in busing for high school students,
participation fees for athletic, music and extracurriculars
and elimination of academic elective
offerings not required by the Ohio Department of
Education. There have already been many reductions:
for the fourth year, all buildings and departmental
budgets have been reduced by 6%, resulting in a 24%
decrease and 20 staff members have not been replaced,
with both of these actions resulting in close to $2M in
savings to the district. A total staff reduction of
approximate 30 has been achieved through retirements
and attrition, and budget cuts have been in addition to
other reductions such as elimination of field trips and
release days for professional development outside of
the district.
In addition, certified and classified staff has agreed
Nichols to Succeed Moffat
as Lake’s Treasurer
Nicole Nichols, a Lake High School graduate, has
been named by the Lake Local Board of Education to
succeed Bob Moffat as District Treasurer. Moffat,
who will retire in December of this year, has been
with the District for 20 years.
Nichols is currently serving as the Treasurer of the
Stark County Area Joint Vocational School District,
responsible for the receipt, distribution, investment
and reconciliation of all funds. Prior to her service
with the JVS, Nichols was an audit manager for the
State of Ohio with responsibilities including
budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting, as
well as research and resolution of technical
to concessionary contracts with a freeze on step
increases in salary for the past three years, and a focus
on reduction of substitute usage and overtime has
resulted in additional savings.
Beginning this fall, Lake has reduced the number of
bus stops that it operates. The District has 29 busses
that traveled approximately 1,450 miles per day last
year. With the reduced number of stops, busses will
now travel approximately 800 miles per day, a
difference of 650 miles, translating to a savings of
more than $85,000 per year. State minimums could be
put in place next year, eliminating bussing for grades
9-12 and further reducing the number of stops for
grades K-8. Other changes could include a pay to
participate fee for all extra-curricular activities and
additional staff and service reductions.
The district is currently operating at budget levels
below 2007-2008. “We are budgeted for
approximately $300,000 less than what we spent in
2007-2008, so we are very happy with our stewardship
and focus on being conscientious with our resources”,
says Jeff Wendorf, Lake’s Superintendent. “We have
always been fiscally responsible, but reductions in
funding from the State of Ohio as well as decreased
local revenue will force us to begin to eliminate some
of things that we have taken for granted like bussing
for all students, athletic and arts programming that are
no cost to our families, smaller class sizes and
academic elective course offerings. We will be
counting on the community to direct us as to how they
want to proceed with these reductions. Presenting our
budget and our possible reductions in programming is
not a threat. It is simply the reality of having to
operate with $1.5M less in our budget. We feel
strongly that our students need the level of
programming and support that they are currently
receiving in order to continue to be prepared for
higher education and the workforce.”
accounting and audit related issues.
Ms. Nichols earned her Bachelor of Business
Administration with an accounting major and finance
minor, from Kent State University. She achieved her
School Treasurer’s License through Ashland
University. In addition to her work, Nichols was
recognized by Leadership Stark County Signature
Program’s 24th class, the Ohio Auditor of State with
an award for exemplary financial reporting in
accordance with GAAP, and with the 2004 Auditor of
State Distinguished Service Award.
Ms. Nichols resides in Hartville with her husband
and twin daughters, who attend Hartville Elementary
School. She is involved in the PTO and the Lake
Youth Softball program.
A loss of revenue for Lake
The CAT is an annual privilege tax measured by gross receipts on business activities. This tax applies
to all types of businesses and was enacted to replace the Tangible Personal Property Tax (TPP) and the
Corporate Franchise Tax. According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, “The stated purpose of the
CAT was to fund “the needs of the state and its local governments”. Originally, all of the money was
used to replace school and local government TPP revenues. That has changed so that now monies are
placed into a General Revenue Fund and redistributed. Now, schools receive 52.5% of revenues,
decreasing to 35% next year. Because the funds are redistributed indirectly, taxes raised from a particular
district’s businesses are placed into the general fund for redistribution and not necessarily given back to
the district from which they were raised. Why is this important? Case in point, Lake loses revenue each
year to Jackson and North Canton, both which receive monies raised from Lake Local School district
businesses. Last year, Lake received $240,401, down from $832,712 in 2011, compared to $2,572,240
received by Jackson and $1,873,354 received by North Canton. Lake is projected to earn $0 in 2013.
DISTRICT HAPPENINGS
Lake’s Digital Student
Enrollment Climbing
For the past four years, Lake High School has seen
the number of students enrolled in on-line classes climb.
Lake works with Florida Virtual School to offer its
students opportunities for classes from online personal
fitness to advanced placement and honors core courses
like Government, Chemistry, English and Algebra.
With more than one-third of students in higher
education taking at least one online class, and 65% of
higher learning institutions stating that online learning is
a critical part of their long-term strategy*, introducing
this method of learning in high schools across the
United States is becoming more and more important.
“We believe that it is important for our students to
be prepared for continued studies and be able to take
classes that are not only challenging but that fit their
schedules and their areas of interest. Many taking our
online classes are students that are adding classes of
interest or taking electives that may not fit in their
schedules. While we continue to have some online
opportunities that may help struggling students, most of
our digital students are high achieving and collegebound”,
says John McAllister, Lake’s Director of
Instruction.
At Lake, there are students taking one on-line class,
and some taking the majority of their schedules online.
There are many ways to communicate with teachers,
including Skype, text, email and phone and most classes
have an on-line discussion board that allows students to
interact with each other through prompts and questions
chosen by the instructor. “I really like that I have
flexibility with my Marine Science Honors class”, says
junior Preston Mackert. “I have a really intense training
schedule for my hockey and taking classes online helps
me budget my time. I think that my classes are at least
as challenging if not more so and I have the opportunity
to learn from other students as well as great
communication with my teachers”.
Since 2009, the district has seen an increase from 68
to 174 enrollments in online classes, with 31 classes
now offered, up from 12. The Stark County ESC
convenes a group of Digital Directors from its member
districts monthly to share best practices and collaborate.
While all Lake Students have the opportunity to take
their online classes with Lake teachers, other districts
partner with Lake to have students take classes not
offered through their district. For example, Lake has
several students from another district taking Latin
through its program.
Lake’s American History, US Government and
Economics teacher Mike Hooper has this to say about
the online curriculum: “I like digital learning because it
gives the students the flexibility to complete required
learning on their own time schedule and since the
learning takes place outside of school, it also requires
the students to learn self-discipline. They must be
responsible for keeping current with the assignments. I
feel that a lot of the students who take on-line courses
will be going to college and they will then have some
experience in taking an on-line course and being
responsible for turning their work in on time.”
PUBLIC NOTICE
The Lake Local School District and the Ohio
Department of Education are trying to identify
children with disabilities, birth through age 21, who
may be in need of special education services.
For children birth to age 3, a disability means an
established condition known to result in a delay or
a documented developmental delay.
For children 3-5 years of age, a disability means
that a child has a documented deficit in one or
more of the following areas:
• communication,
• vision,
• hearing,
• motor skills,
• social/emotional functioning,
• self-help, and/or,
• cognitive skills.
For school-age students, a disability means that a
student has been identified as having one or more
of the following disabilities that adversely affects
his/her progress in the general education
curriculum:
• multiple disabilities
• deaf-blindness
• visual impairments
• speech/language impairments
• orthopedic impairments
• emotional disturbances
• cognitive disabilities
• specific learning disability
• autism
• traumatic brain injury
• other health impairments
The Lake Local School District offers evaluation
for all children with suspected disabilities free of
charge. Once the school district is notified about a
child who is suspected of having a disability, the
child’s parent(s) are contacted and informed of their
rights as required by the Individuals Education
Improvement Act (IDEIA) and the Operating
Standards for Ohio’s Schools serving Children with
Disabilities.
If you know of a child who is suspected of having a
disability, contact Gary Kandel, Director, Special
Services, at 330.877.4293, or via email at
kandelgary@lakelocal.org. Further information
Yellowstone Class Trip
This year will be a special year for a few juniors at Lake HS because a new science
class will be offered on Yellowstone National Park. The class will meet after school
starting in November on Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 8:30 until May. Several Lake
Staff members will play a role in the teaching of this class and they are Mrs. Mendenhall,
Mr. Sommers, Mr. Urbanek and Mr. Wolfe. Topics covered will include the history of the
park as well as the unique geology, natural history, flora, fauna and thermal features.
Since camping, backpacking and fly fishing are going to be an important component of
the trip students will be given the basics for each of these topics as well. In July of 2013,
a trip to Yellowstone National Park will allow for the knowledge and skills to be put into
action. While the class is supported by LHS it will not be funded by the district. Each
student will have a considerable time and monetary investment in the class. There are
plans for fundraisers to help reduce the costs for students. In addition, Mr. Urbanek has
contacted various outdoor venders and suppliers for either free or reduced costs on specific
items such has dehydrated camping food, camping equipment or fly fishing materials. So
far most of the contacted venders and stores have been very helpful and willing to discount
needed items.
Interested students (juniors only) have to complete an application process. The
applications are in the Yellowstone class folder under the Science Departments
eClassrooms site on the Lake Local web page. In addition to the applications, there is an
informative power point as well as the tentative course syllabus and YNP itinerary.
Interested parents can e-mail Mr. Urbanek at urbanekken@lakelocal.org
National Friends of Libraries Week
The Lake Community Branch Library will be spending the entire week of October 21-27,
2012, celebrating its Friends of the Library group. The Friends of the Lake Community Branch
Library are celebrating their 10th year anniversary this fall. Currently over 200 community
members contribute annually to the Friends and 56 of these contributors actively volunteer their
time to assist the group with fundraising efforts that include the annual used book sale held
every June.
“Our library would be much poorer without the Friends,” said Library Branch
Manager Jen Welsh. “I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the
services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends.”
“The library has always played such an important role in my life” said Friends
president Nancy McKnight. “This is an especially busy time for our group this year as we are
actively working to pass #Issue 42. This Levy for Stark County District Library is crucial to
maintain our excellent library services. The levy funds currently represent 40% of the Library’s
budget.”
We encourage you to vote YES on Issue #42.
HARTVILLE ELEM.
CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS & EVENTS
Third Grade News
The Hartville Elementary third grade
students have gotten off to a fantastic start this
school year! Students are reviewing their
phonemic awareness skills through the
“Phonics Dance” and are participating in
numerous listening activities during our “Brain
Break!” For example, the game “Ships and
Sailors” goes along with the skill of following
directions.
At the beginning of the school year the
students are learning about citizenship and
responsibilities. Hartville Elementary third
graders are taking action and displaying great
citizenship skills by helping others. They are
advocates for the Ronald McDonald House of
Charities. The students are making posters,
performing skits, and reminding other students
to SAVE their POP TABS! The pop tabs help
the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Students are also learning about
government jobs and roles, exploring science
through numerous experiments, and are
practicing their typing skills on the computer.
In a few weeks, guest speakers will come in
and talk to them about their roles in
government. Students took part in the Oil Spill
experiment. Let’s make it a great school year!
Second Grade News
The second grade classes at Hartville were
introduced to the Scientific Method by “Saving
Fred.” The students worked in groups following
the Scientific Method steps to 1) Ask a
question, 2) Make a hypothesis, 3) Complete the
experiment, 4) Collect data, and 5) Show the
results of what they learned. Each group was
given a “boat” (cup), gummy worm (Fred), life
preserver (life saver), and paper clips. They had
to develop a strategy to save Fred, after he had
capsized, using their materials without touching
any of the tools
except the paper
clips. The
second grade
students
discovered there
were several
different plans
that worked to
rescue Fred!
The scientific method will be implemented by
the students throughout September during an
apple freshness test, button activity, a making
colors experiment, a hard boiled or raw egg
examination, and an ice cream making
procedure.
First Grade News
The first graders at Hartville Elementary
are diving into the first grade curriculum with
enthusiasm and excitement! The students are
excelling in reading, writing, math, science,
and social studies.
The first graders were excited to take the
plunge into the reading curriculum with our
leveled take-home book program, poetry
notebooks, and word wall word activities.
They also love singing songs from the word
family songbook and learning new strategies
at their instructional levels in guided reading!
It’s amazing how much first graders have
already learned in math. Skip counting, tally
marks, calendar activities, and number stories
are just a few of the first grade concepts we
are working on. The students love working
with math manipulatives in small groups to
practice these first grade skills.
In social studies, students have been
engaged in learning about fairness, rules, and
good citizenship. The students have been
great examples for one another, showing
excellent behavior and caring for their
classmates each and every day. We also took
time out to remember the tragically historic
events that took place on September 11.
Students wore red, white, and blue to school
and learned about what happened on that day
eleven years ago. We are proud to be citizens
of the United States of America.
In our next science unit, students will learn
about needs and wants, as well as food
sources. They can’t wait to learn about where
different foods come from. We will be using
apples as an example, learning about apple
trees and Johnny Appleseed. Our unit will
culminate with an apple party where we will
celebrate our learning by making applesauce
and other apple treats.
In October, we look forward to hosting a
variety of exciting activities including a
firefighter presentation, Grandparents’ Day,
and Halloween parties.
UNIONTOWN ELEM.
CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS & EVENTS
News from
Kindergarten
The beginning of kindergarten was a success
at Uniontown! All of the Kindergartners enjoyed
playing in multi-sensory centers such as sorting,
play-doh, puppet making, creating patterns, and
building.
News from First Grade
It has been a fantastic start to the school
year! The students are settling in to the first
grade routine. The first graders harvested
vegetables from the science garden that last
years’ first graders planted. Several science
garden volunteers helped the students pick the
vegetables. The students worked in groups with
science garden volunteers, Mrs. Sladen and Mrs.
Stuyvesant, and parent volunteers, to chop the
vegetables to make chili. Then, Mr. Kreitz, our
custodian, used the chopped vegetables to
prepare chili for the students to enjoy. Everyone
really enjoyed this learning project! Thank you
to Mr. Kreitz, Mrs. Sladen, Mrs. Stuyvesant, and
all of the parent volunteers who made this project
a success.
First grade would
like to welcome Mrs.
Massa to our first grade
teaching team. Mrs.
Massa was a second
grade teacher last year.
We are very glad to have
her in first grade.
Mr. Kreitz and Mrs. Sladen help the first grade
students harvest vegetables in the Science Garden
to use to make chili.
News from Second
Grade
The second grade teachers welcomed the
following new students to our building: Carter
Yarger, Abbey Hance, Brandon Hopkins and
Brittney Walker. We are also excited to have
Mrs. Mengeu and Mrs. Snodgrass join our
second grade team this year.
September was an eventful month for the
second grade students. We started the year off
with our “Have you Filled a Bucket?” program.
The students learned how their kind words and
actions make others feel good. In Social
Studies we focused on the importance of
following rules in our school, home and
community.
The students love going to our science
garden for lessons. They have the opportunity
to observe animals and plants in the science
garden all year as they go through the seasons.
The students have participated in simple
experiments in the classroom and in the garden
as they explore scientific inquiry.
We look forward to the many changes that
will occur in the next few months- changes in
our science garden, changes in our presidency
and changes as we learn new things!
Welcome new second grade students!
News from Third Grade
We are so excited about the 2012-13 school
year! Third grade started the year off with
some new teachers. We would like to welcome
Mrs. Galbraith, Mr. Groholy, and Mrs. Hudson.
They are all fantastic teachers and wonderful
additions to the third grade team.
The third grade teachers worked very hard
this summer to integrate the new Core
Standards into our curriculum. We think the
kids will be very excited about the many
projects and activities we have planned for the
year. It has been a busy start. We have already
had our first guest speaker in to kick off our
Social Studies Unit learning about local
governments. The boys and girls enjoyed
listening to Uniontown Trustee John Arnold
speak about our government.
It is going to be an exciting fun filled year
full of many memorable experiences!
LAKE MIDDLE
CLASSROOM HAPPENINGS & EVENTS
LMS Welcomes its New
Students
On Thursday, August 30, Lake Middle
School hosted a delicious pizza lunch complete
with vegetables, fruit, and dessert, made or
brought in by the staff for all the students who
are new to the district this year. Each of the 14
new 6th graders, 13 new 7th graders, and 11
new 8th graders was personally invited to eat
with their teachers, administrators, and
counselors as a way to become more familiar
with the school and its staff as well as to find
out that he or she is not alone in being new.
Teachers and students also introduced
themselves and shared a little bit about their
educational background. This lunch was a
great opportunity to welcome these students
and help them feel more comfortable here at
Lake Middle School. One teacher commented
about this year’s new students, “It was hard to
tell who was new because you all blended so
wellparticipating
and getting to
know others.”
So glad to
have you as
Magazine Subscriptions
Fundraiser
As a building, Lake Middle School does
one fundraiser each year. This year they
continued with the magazine subscriptions.
Every student was encouraged to sell (or
renew) at least one subscription. The official
sale has ended, however, all are encouraged to
go on-line to the middle school web page
(lakelocal.org/ms) and click on the Great
American link at the bottom of the page and
order and / or renew a subscription if you
haven’t done so already. LMS will get credit
for this subscription. Magazines are a great
way to promote and support reading for our
children and a simple way for anyone to
support our
children at
school. The
monies
raised go
for a variety
of things,
such as
Donny Berns, Kristin Bright, Kre'Sula supplies,
technology,
celebrations, and other things. Mr. Reed,
principal at the middle school said, “This is a
simple yet effective way for us to raise money
to help out, we really appreciate the support we
get from parents, family, and community
members.”
Lake Middle School Fall
Sports
Every year LMS has over 100 students
participate in our fall sports (extra-curricular)
activities. This is a shift for the 7th and 8th
grade students who get to put on the Blue
Streak uniform for the first time and begin
representing not only their respective teams,
but their school and even the community.
Having so many students involved is just one
of the positive things that LMS students
participate in. Recent research suggests that
participation in extracurricular activities may
increase students' sense of engagement or
attachment to their school, and thereby
decrease the likelihood of school failure and
dropping out
(Lamborn et al,
1992; Finn,
1993). Lake
Middle School
is proud of all
our students
and their
accomplishments
and is
encouraged
once again for
the successful fall sports teams. “Watching our
young student athletes dedicate themselves to
excellence both on and off the field is very
encouraging,” Mr. Reed, Principal, LMS.
LMS Gets Treated
On Friday, September 7, Mr. Reed and
Mrs. Lyberger treated students to a cool,
refreshing treat of popsicles. The treat was in
celebration of a great start to the 2012-2013
school year and to help students cool off after a
hot week.
Legal Studies Hosts
Lake Votes 2012
Lake High School’s Legal Studies and the
Emmy nominated Interactive Media programs,
in collaboration with the Lake Township
Chamber of Commerce hosted a voter
education venture
to be uploaded to
Lake TV, YouTube
and
lakechamber.com.
In addition, the
interviews will be
available to
access through
Lake Local
School District’s
and Lake Twp.
Chamber of
Commerce’s
Facebook and
Twitter pages.
This will allow voters to access the interviews
on their own time schedules and watch them
more than once if necessary.
Additional partnerships with Mercy
Medical Center and the Lake Township
Historical Society were vital in directing and
helping the Legal Studies students. Richard
Regula of Mercy Medical came into the
classroom to assist students in articulating the
questions to be asked during the interview
process, and the Historical Society is hosting
Lake Votes 2012 in the One Room
Schoolhouse, at the corner of Lake Center
Street and King Church Avenue.
Candidates running in the following
elections were invited to participate in this
event:
Hartville Mayor
Hartville Council
Lake Township Trustee
Lake Local Board of Education
Canton Municipal Judge
The event provides the community voters
the opportunity to get to know the
qualifications and goals, of each candidate as
an elected official and a representative of their
community; along with their views on current
issues.
This educational venture, called Lake
Votes 2012, features interviews with each
candidate conducted by senior Legal Studies
students. Technical expertise
was provided by Lake
High School
Interactive Media
students.
Lake High School
Health Tech Prep
The Lake High School Health Tech Prep
class is off to another great start this year. The
junior class has already learned a great deal of
medical terminology and will soon be putting
into practice the vital sign skills they learned
when they assist the school nurse with Health
Screenings during September and October.
The senior class will also be assisting with
these screenings. What
a great way to get
practical learning
experience while also
providing a much needed
service to our community!
The senior class attended
their Mercy Health Center
orientation at the beginning of
September and are now job
shadowing every Tuesday and Thursday
afternoon in various health professions in the
Hartville, Uniontown, Green and North
Canton areas. These students will be working
diligently all year to complete their portfolios
in order to receive college credits for the
course.
Our first LifeShare Blood Drive of the
year will be held on September 28 in the
Performing Arts Hall. We are always so proud
of the many students at Lake HS who
selflessly donate much needed blood.
We would like to thank all the local
businesses who have graciously allowed our
students to shadow in their facilities. It is truly
a wonderful experience for these future health
professionals to have as they work towards
graduation, a college education, and eventually
a career in the medical fields.
Lake High School
Spanish Club
The Lake High School Spanish Club has
already begun. With their first meeting on the
12th of September, they have already voted on
representatives and made other important
decisions. As in years past, there are four
members who lead the Spanish Club. The
President, Vice-President, Secretary, and
Treasurer are Robyn King, Lauren Wheeler,
Connor McKenney, and Tyler Milam. The
Club will be getting together within the
coming weeks. There is still room in the club,
for those interested. Representatives have
already promised a more active and involved
year for the Spanish club.
FINE ARTS
Artists at Hartville Go
Cave Exploring!
Artists in Miss Stegner and Mrs. Susa’s first
grade classes set out on a journey of artistic
exploration. Students took a journey of the
imagination as the art room was turned into a
cave! Students used a flashlight to locate cave art
on the walls and ceiling of the art room as cave
sounds played in the background. Students
learned that cave art, painted on the rocky interior
cave surfaces are the earliest and oldest forms of
art yet discovered. They discussed the art word,
TEXTURE, learning to discriminate between
surfaces that
are rough and
bumpy,
slippery and
smooth, and
sharp or
prickly.
Students
learned to
identify
symbols and animals that cavemen and women
saw in their natural environment (horses,
handprints, bison, deer, and animal tracks) and
how these images were transferred to the walls of
the caves using animal tails, sticks, and their own
fingers for brushes. Students discovered that
because many of everyday products were not
invented in prehistoric times, cave dwellers had
to rely on the environment for everything
including food and shelter. Because paint was
not invented, cave people used mud, clay, and
ground berries to create the natural colored
pigments with which they painted. Students were
engaged and motivated by the opportunity to use
their fingers, twigs, charcoal, and oil pastels to
create their own symbolic cave art. Students
learned about the neutral colors, texture, scale,
and symbols in this art lesson. Technology also
played a large role in our exploration of the caves
as students were able to take an amazing virtual
tour of some of the most famous cave paintings
in the world, those of Lascaux in France!
Lake Elementary Hosts Traveling Art Exhibit:
ART BEYOND BORDERS
Little artists at Lake and Hartville Elementary observed and explored a new traveling exhibit, Art
Beyond Borders. The exhibit, hosted and sponsored by the collaboration of Lake Local Schools and,
non-profit community organization, Arts In Stark, was admired and analyzed by students for two
weeks. The display featured twenty-four artists from twenty-four different countries who were pulled
together in this collection to help promote art as our universal language. As teachers, our hope is that
students will begin to discover how we all have something in common: the desire to express ourselves
with art. Our year-long art partnership with Arts in Stark will help raise student awareness of the
imperative roll the arts play in all aspects of education and our daily lives.
As we begin to investigate and understand how art defies the hands of time, and the barriers of
language and economics, we look forward to many more delightful art engagements throughout the
year. Uniquely tailored to inspire and communicate acceptance, our upcoming, featured events will
cultivate an atmosphere of peace and understanding among students and our community as a whole.
ATHLETIC NEWS
Volleyball:
The Lady Streak volleyball teams are strong
contenders again this season in the Federal League.
Our varsity team has a great mix of veteran and young,
but skilled student-athletes. The JV squad and
freshmen team are also playing quite well with the
Middle School teams (4 squads) setting their sights on
successful season.
Starting in early October, all of the teams will be
preparing for tournament play. Again this season, the
Girls OHSAA Division I Volleyball Sectional/District
will be hosted by Lake High School. The dates of the
tournament will be October 15-25; specific dates for
the Lake HS matches will be posted on the LLSD
website as well as in the local print media.
Football:
Our football teams continue to play at a high level
of intensity and show much improvement. This fall,
there are over 110 boys on the high school teams
(Varsity, JV and 9th grade) which bodes well for future
successes. In October, the Streaks will host pre-season
Federal League favorite, GlenOak, in our
Homecoming game. A great crowd will be expected
as the team pushes forward for an OHSAA play-off
spot.
Boys Soccer:
This year’s team faced one of the toughest early
season schedules in the history of the boys’ soccer
program at Lake High School. The varsity team went
up against some of Ohio’s best programs in their first
four games and battled right down to the wire in each
contest. As the second half of the season unfolds, look
for this group to really play well as the early-season
challenges should begin to pay off. The boys’ JV and
9th grade teams have been playing very well which
indicates greater success for the future.
The Streaks hope to make another strong run in
the OHSAA tournament which will begin the latter
part of October. Follow the latest news on the team
via the LLSD website.
Girls Golf:
The Lady Streaks fielded one of their youngest
teams this fall with several players in their first year of
competition. However, the team has shown
tremendous growth. For the first time in several
seasons, the Girls Golf program is providing a JV
program as over a dozen girls have shown involvement
in the program.
The first week of October will see the girls in
action during the OHSAA Sectional tournament which
will be played at Turkeyfoot Golf Course.
Cross-Country:
The Boys and Girls cross-country teams are
“burning the courses” early in the season and are
looking for an even stronger finish this fall. Over the
first half of their respective seasons, the teams have
finished strong in all meets with several student-
athletes running personal best times. The boys’ team
has finished in the top two of their first three meets,
winning the Claymont and the Dover Invitationals.
The girls’ team has solidly finished in the top four of
every meet they’ve entered this season.
The Federal League meet will be held at Perry on
Girls Soccer:
The Blue Streak girls soccer team is off to another
great start! Both the varsity and JV teams are playing
very solidly this season. The challenges get greater for
the team during the back half of the season and the
team and coaches are committed to making advances
at the District tournament level this season. There is a
good balance of veterans and youth on this team and
the “best days” are still ahead for these teams.
Boys Golf:
This year’s Boys’ golf team gradually built
momentum making a run at the Federal League
championship; the post-season Federal League
tournament was held on September 29. The OHSAA
Sectional golf tournament was held on October 2nd at
Seven Hills Golf Club (no results at time of print).
The Streaks were hoping to place high enough to send
the team or individuals to Columbus later this month
for the state championships. Good luck “linksters”!
ORCHESTRA NEWS
Orchestra News
By Rachel Lingenhoel and Carly Hunter,
members of the High School Orchestra.
The Lake Orchestra Program is
happy to start out another exciting year
of performances and competitions! As a
school program, we strive to not only
improve the musical abilities of the
students, but to bring music to the
community. All concerts are free and
open to the public; your attendance is
always appreciated!
Upcoming concerts include the 7th
and 8th Grade orchestras Fall Concert
on Tuesday, October 16th. This
performance provides an opportunity for
our students to perform with the string
students from North Canton Middle School. Each year we trade being the host school with North
Canton; this year we will be welcoming those students to perform here, in our Performing Arts
Hall. The concert will begin at 7:00 P.M. and will include a total of six pieces. The Lake and
North Canton orchestras will each play two pieces. Then, the two orchestras will combine to play
the final two selections together. This has been a tradition for over a decade; we would love for you
to come out and support the students.
Looking ahead, we will have Holiday Concerts performed by each group. The High School
Orchestra will perform on Thursday, November 29th. The 5th and 6th graders will proudly play
their holiday best on Tuesday, December 4th. We will wrap up our festive concerts with the 7th and
8th Grade Orchestras on Thursday, December 13th. The concerts will include traditional, popular
and holiday pieces as well as movie soundtracks. All the concerts begin at 7:00 P.M. and will take
place in the Lake Community Performing Arts Hall.
Kindergarten News
The school year is off to a wonderful start in the Hartville Elementary Kindergarten
classrooms! Students enjoyed the book The Kissing Hand, which deals with the transition from
home to school, and many fun activities to go along
with the story, including games, art, and a special
snack! Many thanks go out to our Hartville PTO
volunteers who assisted with Kindergarten screening
and in helping the Kindergarten students find their
way to their classrooms on throughout the first week
of school.
The boys and girls have adjusted well to the
routines of the school day. They are able to manage
their BEE (Bring Everything Everyday) books, to go
through the lunch line using the keypad, and find
their bus. The students are already developing new
literacy skills, such as an understanding of the words “character” and “setting” and learning our
Kindergarten “popcorn words” (so named because they keep ‘popping up’ in the books we
read!). Math skills such as counting and sorting are practiced using hands on manipulatives as
well as the smartboards.
Just for fun, the Hartville PTO sponsored a
“Slushy Day”. The boys and girls really enjoyed
this cool treat to end a very warm week! Students
were also excited to participate in the PTO “Read,
Move, and Groove” fundraiser. Thank you to all of
our Hartville families for your support!
To wrap up an already busy month, the
Kindergarteners will enjoy a bushel of apple
activities. Stories, songs, poems, sorting, pattering,
graphing, and taste tests, as well as cooking, will
create academic experiences and opportunities that
are engaging and exciting for our young learners.
