3.3 CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES AND PLANS<br />
<strong>Middle</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> <strong>Pastoral</strong> <strong>Lease</strong> lies within the Kaikoura Management Unit of the<br />
Nelson/Marlborough Conservation Management Strategy (Department of Conservation,<br />
1996). Relevant priorities for this unit are listed as:<br />
o Control goats in Inland and Seaward Kaikoura ranges.<br />
o Control goats in forest, and fence remnant plant communities to prevent stock damage in<br />
coastal areas.<br />
o Identify and seek protection of areas of significant natural or historic value on pastoral<br />
leases.<br />
o Investigate the distribution and conservation status of reptile and giant invertebrate<br />
species.<br />
o Survey and record archaeological sites.<br />
o Negotiate appropriate access agreements to key areas.<br />
o Maintain wilderness of central ranges and facilitate wilderness climbing experiences.<br />
o Promote and maintain facilities for recreational hunting of chamois and other species.<br />
o Seek controls on land clearance in the coastal area.<br />
o Advocate retention of the coastal scenic corridor.<br />
