1. Be honest to yourself!
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
1 JOHN 1:9
Statement from the interview:
“God wants to meet you in the moment of your deepest shame! Don’t wait too long and don’t push God out of this
issue! Jesus knows your innermost needs and stands by your side when you are at “rock bottom”! At that moment I
understood what “Gospel” means for us!”
2. Don’t walk the path on your own!
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If they fall down, they can help each other
up. But pity those who fall and have no one to help them up!” ECCLESIASTES 4:9-10
Discussion / Reflection
How does the topic “pornography” affect you?
Take enough time to share about this question (maybe in smaller groups).
The following examples should help to also include those who have not directly been affected by the consumption of
porn:
- consume porn at the moment or have done some in the past
- don’t consume porn, but sometimes struggle with “head cinema”
- pornography is not an issue in my life but “egocentric sexuality” (masturbation) hinders me from reaching more to
“divine sexuality”
- my partner is affected and I also suffer from the effects (aftermath)
- (more for women): I don’t know how I should react positively to “stupid” flirtations, glances, etc. How can I keep
away in a Christian loving way?
- In the past I was sexually manipulated or struggled with it in some form.
You as a small group leader don’t have the responsibility to help everything with their problems!
Encourage them to get in touch with the counselling in ICF: http://www.icf.ch/community/seelsorge.html
For those who consume pornography there are some “measures” for the first steps towards divine sexuality
on the following page.
Application and prayer
Take the content from your conversations and bring them before God. What does Jesus say to your situation?
Proclaim God’s thoughts and His forgiveness!
If you have decided to take some “measures”, make some “accountability groups” to encourage each other and help
each other in the further steps.
First steps for a porn-free life:
Are you ready to stand up against your porn addiction and do you want to live a porn-free life?
Do you consume porn? If yes, for how long, how often and with which medium?
e.g. in the last week I consumed porn 3 times on the PC, during each time I was on the internet for about 1 hour.
Tip for SG-leader:
It can be that the SG-participant wants to explain with stories. But it is better to ask for numbers and facts.
What do you do so that you don’t consume porn?
Tip for SG-leader:
It is not about what one used to do nor what would theoretically be possible, but what one actively does at the
moment. It is not a bad thing if somebody says he doesn’t actively do anything.
Important indicator: How much does this measure help in a scale from 1 to 6?
What would be good measures for you? Are there people who have become free from porn consumption? What do
they suggest?
Tip for SG-leader:
- filter for PC/mobile phone
- child protection on TV
- as of … o’clock not usage of PC/TV
- cancel internet for a certain period of time
- be accountable to another SG-participant
- etc.
What is the next step for you?
Tip for SG-leader:
It would be helpful to write this down so you can ask if the participant was able to take this step at the next meeting.
A possible next step could be going to an information evening of porn-free. This could also be interesting for a whole
small group. The information evening takes place on 22 nd August 2012 at 7.30 pm in ICF Zurich.
LOVE IN ACTION
From the 25 th to 30 th of June 2012 hundreds of Christians from many churched in the city of Zurich are going to do
good to the city and its inhabitants via various campaigns. The goal is to make God’s love visible in our city through
practical help.
With your small group think about how you can use your time and know-how. You can either start your own
project or join one of the two “BIG EVENTS” or support a “SMALL EVENT”.
Plan a small group evening on the topic “Love in Action” and use the suitable video or written programme on our
HEARTBEAT for small group leaders
HOW do I deal with my own sexuality?
WHAT is actually awaiting me in heaven?
WHAT does it mean to be a Christian at my place of employment?
WHAT is the true meaning of “worship”?
HOW can I live out God’s love in everyday life?
Just before the summer heat comes, we want to ask ourselves five hot “W” questions which challenge us
as Christians in our everyday lives over and over again. We will look at in which practical ways we can live
and experience our faith in the relationships to our partners, people in our surrounding and to our God.
Our hearts are sure to be warmed on the Sunday when we catch a glimpse of heaven. It will once again
get hot when all football fans in ICF Zurich cheer at the public viewing of the European Championships.
An exciting programme is awaiting you! See you soon & bring your friends, relatives, etc. along!
Preparation:
Test your goals:
(1) The goal of the small groups is to help people strengthen their personal relationship with Jesus and to live in real
fellowship with one another.
(2) Which people in my small group do I encourage to be leaders? Which opportunities to practice do I provide for
them?
(3) What goal do I set for the small group meeting?
Apply these three values to your small group:
Community, experiencing God, multiplication (internal and external growth).
Consider how these three values are put into practice in the next small group meeting.
Pray for your small group:
- Pray for your members and their concerns.
- Pray that each has an encounter with God and that you may all achieve your goals together.
- Consciously submit yourself under God’s leadership so that the evening may take place
according to His will.
Plan your small group meeting:
- Consider what you will delegate (administration, hospitality/food, prayer, worship, input …).
- All should be informed where and when the meeting is taking place. Communication is a matter
Of leadership!
Count on God’s presence:
“For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20
