^ Mining in British
Columbia is on the
verge of extinction and
the present government
is responsible for its
demise, says Don
Carter.
TERESA MALLAM
Observer Staff Reporter
The president of the
Cariboo Mining Associatioii
says that hard rock and placer
mifting will soon "be a thing of
the past" in this province.
He says local miners have
lost all faith in the NDP and
their policy making.
"I honesty thought there
was hope with the new government.
But instead, they've
killed the mining industry.".
The placer miner contends
Petroleum Minister Anne
Edwards is a "fundamentally
weak minister" who has done
nothing to improve the
dilemma faced by miners
across B.C.
As a result, says Carter,
"There's rnore mines closed
down around here' than I've
ever seen in my life."
"We (miners) have to rack
our brains now to think of any
that are still operational."
At a meeting last Monday
of about 40 miners and several
politicians, support was thrown
behind the visiting leader of
the opposition, Gordon Wilson,
as the group's only hope
of future economic recovery.
Carter ^aid the Liberal
leader left the meeting vowing
to become "an advocate of
miners," and one who will
fight for their rights.
Wilson also made it clear,
reported Carter, that he was
Carlatans have
Strong ties: Marnle MacLachlan, Karina Carreck, Fanny Allard, Mare-Noelle Boudreault and J.C.
Dodge are firm believer In a united and prosperous Canada
•EXCHANG
M Quebecers consider
themselves a distinct
society, so distinct that
many want to separate
from the rest of Canada.
CINDY E. HARNETT
Observer Staff Reporter
But a young group of Voyageur
exchange students, living
in the heart of separatist country,
who visited Quesnel last
week, see little difference between
themselves and their
western peers.
In fact, both Quesnel students
Marnie MacLachlan,
Karina Carreck and J.C.
Dodge and Dolbeau students
Mare-Noelle Boudreault and
Fanny Allard thought they
would dislike one another but
upon meeting, were surprised
by how alikfP'gtey really were.
Therein, the two gi*oups
say the federal initiative which
will see 120 students in the
Cariboo-Chilcotin region (30
from Quesnel) exchange with
a geographically and economically
comparable group from
Quebec has already been a
success.
"I hope Quebec will stay
with the rest of Canada, because
I think we are not so different,"
said Boudreault fol
lowing a Rotary lunch held at
the Green Leaf restaurant.
"People have been so nice
since our arrival. Everything is
very different here... from the
street lights to the way you
serve hamburgers (without the
bun being toasted)," she
added.
In reference to the
separatist issue and the idea
Boudreault comments, "II is
up to us, who are the future, to
speak to one another."
The Quesnel group which
recently returned from their
two week cultural exchange
commented on the beauty of
Quebec and noted that while
they observed many culturally
and geographically differences
permeating through jhe streets
of the city, they noticed little
difference between the interests
they shared as people.
Carreck is hopeful that the'
opportunity both groups have
had to meet each other will go
far in enabling tomorrow's
politicians to remember the
similarities of this country's
citizens, respect the differences
and work towards
building a country that accommodates
