"Fuji and Blossom"
by Margaret Babbott
As if I were bent north
when I am southeast.
As if I were copper
when I am pumice.
Tell me what I am,
and I will tell you what I am not.
I am neither sequoia, nor birch;
red tailed hawk nor finch;
abalone nor moon.
Not genius, not sterile, not puerile.
Nor migraine, nor stallion, nor splash.
Not a curled Polaroid of a tomboy in a crabapple
tree, body smack center, back leaning
against the arch of the trunk,
bare feet outstretched like talons,
cocky. One hand covering
her face with a five cent oriental fan,
Fuji and blossom.
