Chapter Three
WHERE THERE’S
SMOKE...
I
remember as a child deciding I was going to
read the book of Revelation and figure out what
it meant. Looking back, I’m not sure where my
motivation came from (other than the prompting
of the Holy Spirit), but I distinctly recall taking out
the big family Bible and opening it to its final book.
This big family Bible—gold-edged pages, gorgeously
illustrated, beautifully laid out—didn’t get a lot of use, and I
thought it would be a good idea for me to not only use it, but
get to the bottom of what some of it meant.
It didn’t take me long to realize that I wasn’t going to figure
out Revelation any time soon. Beasts and kings, locusts and
scorpions, seals and trumpets, plagues...I wondered how
anyone could ever figure it out. But believing that the Bible
really is the Word of God, I knew it had to mean something.
Maybe someday I’d be able to understand.
