What is myki?
myki is Victoria’s new ticketing
system for travel on train, tram
and bus services.
myki is a small plastic card similar
in size to a credit card, which can
be used for travel on trains, trams
and buses across Melbourne and
regional town buses in Ballarat,
Bendigo, Geelong, Moe, Morwell,
Seymour, Traralgon and Warragul.
myki is valid for use on V/Line
trains operating in Zone 1 and 2
to Melton and Sunbury.
In the future, myki will be used on
all V/Line trains and coaches.
How does myki work?
myki uses smart card technology,
which enables it to give the
customer the best fare for their
travel. The customer simply tops
up their myki with money before
travelling.
When the customer boards a train,
tram or bus they must touch on
their myki at the myki readers,
which are located at train station
entrances and in each doorway of
trams and buses.
At the end of each trip, they must
touch off their myki at the myki
readers to get the lowest myki fare.
Melbourne is progressively making
the switch to myki. The existing
Metcard ticketing system can still
be used and will run alongside
myki for a period of time.
What does the change to
myki mean for you?
The Victorian Government has
introduced some new travel
entitlements for people with a
In addition, people receiving a
Disability Support Pension or
Carer Payment Recipients aged
under 60 (DSP/CAR) will receive
their first concession myki free in
the mail.
You may have a Metcard Sunday
Pass, which gives you free
Sunday travel, and you may not
be sure how this will transfer
across to myki.
What type of myki should
you travel with?
In the following pages, there are
details on:
