Regulation 20 Academic Dress
20.1 In this Regulation:
(i) unless the contrary intention appears, 'silk' includes silk substitute,
(ii) a reference to the colour royal blue shall be read as a reference to the colour
royal blue BCC 197 as defined in that edition of that dictionary, and
(iii) a reference to the colour neyron rose shall be read as a reference to the colour
neyron rose BCC 35 as defined in that edition of that dictionary.
(iv) a reference to the colour spectrum green shall be read as a reference to the
colour spectrum green BCC 100 as defined in that edition of that dictionary; and
(v) a reference to the colour guardsman red shall be read as a reference to the
colour guardsman red BCC 126 as defined in that edition of that dictionary.
20.2 The academic dress of the Chancellor shall be a robe of blue ottoman silk, old gold
velvet collar, facing and collar trimmed with gold lace, four gold flashes at the bottom of
each sleeve; blue velvet bonnet with red feather.
20.3 The academic dress of the Pro-Chancellor shall be a robe of blue ottoman silk, facing
trimmed with gold lace, three gold flashes on the bottom of each sleeve; blue velvet
bonnet with gold cord and tassel.
20.4 The academic dress of the Vice-Chancellor shall be a robe of blue ottoman silk, blue
velvet collar, facing trimmed with gold lace and two gold flashes on each sleeve; blue
velvet bonnet with gold cord and tassel.
20.5 The academic dress of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor or Pro-Vice-Chancellors shall be a robe
of blue ottoman silk, blue velvet collar, facing trimmed with gold lace; blue velvet
bonnet with gold cord and tassel.
20.6 The academic dress of the Graduates of the University being Doctors of Science shall
be:
(i) a gown of neyron rose BCC 35 superfine cloth with facing and sleeves lined with
royal blue silk BCC 197, and
(ii) a hood, full shape, of neyron rose BCC 35 superfine cloth lined with royal blue
silk BCC 197 and
(iii) black velvet bonnet with gold cord and tassel.
20.7 The academic dress of the Graduates of the University being Doctors of Philosophy or
Doctors of Engineering shall be:
(i) the masters' gown (Regulation 20.8(i)), faced with 4 inches of neyron rose silk
BCC 35 and

(ii) a hood, simple shape, of old gold cord lined with neyron rose BCC 35,
neckband of neyron rose and
(iii) black velvet bonnet with gold cord and tassel.
20.8 The academic dress of the Graduates of the University being Masters shall be:
(i) a gown of black russell cord with long square-ended sleeves, inverted 'T' arm
opening, old gold cord and button on yoke and
(ii) a hood, simple shape, of old gold cord lined with royal blue BCC 197,
neckband of royal blue.
(iii) a black cloth mortar board with a black tassel.
20.9 The academic dress of the Graduates of the University awarded Fellowship of
Manufacturing Certificates shall be:
(i) a gown of black Russell cord with long square-ended sleeves, inverted ‘T’ arm
opening, old gold cord and button on yoke and
(ii) a hood, simple shape, of old gold cord outer and lining, with the cowl edge
faced inside with 75mm royal blue BCC 197.
(iii) a black cloth mortar board with a black tassel.
20.10 The academic dress of the Graduates of the University awarded Postgraduate
Diplomas or Postgraduate Certificates shall be:
(i) a gown of black Russell cord with long square-ended sleeves, inverted ‘T’ arm
opening, old gold cord and button on yoke and
(ii) a hood, simple shape, of old gold cord outer and lining, with the cowl edge
faced inside with 75mm royal blue BCC 197, and lining faced with 25mm royal
blue and 25mm old gold ribbon.
(iii) a black cloth mortar board with a black tassel.
20.11 The academic dress of the Graduates of the University being Bachelors shall be:
(i) a gown of black cloth with long pointed sleeves (Cambridge design) with the
front am seam of the sleeves closed.
(ii) a hood of simple shape, of old gold grosgrain BCC 114/115 lined throughout as
follows -
(a) Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, Food Production and Rural Land
Use: spectrum green BCC 100.
(b) Faculty of Military Science, Technology and Management: guardsman
red BCC 126.

(iii) a black cloth mortar board with a black tassel.
