Macquarie University Hospital will
consider installing a helipad after a
number of recent emergency helicopter
transfers of patients from emergency
departments of other hospitals.
Hospital CeO Robert Glynn said patients
had recently been transported to the
hospital on three separate occasions due
to life-threatening neurological conditions
requiring urgent surgery.
On the first occasion, on December 17, a
patient was flown in from Wyong Hospital
with the helicopter landing in an adjacent
University carpark, while just last week
one arrived from John Hunter Hospital,
Newcastle, landing in nearby Christie Park.
“The fact that patients are being flown
in to our Hospital because that’s where
they will receive the best treatment,
speaks volumes for the expertise of our
neurosurgeons,” Glynn said. “In all cases
the patients were quickly and efficiently
transferred by emergency ambulance
officers the short distance to the Hospital,
but if patient care will be improved in
any way by us building a helipad, we’ll
definitely consider it.”
