Chip Away The Stone and more. An enormously welcome re-issue of a pair of albums originally released by the Hightone Records in 2000 and 2002. These proved to be the final albums before the band split for a while prior to their triumphant reformation with the release of the Wishful Thinking album of 2009. Red Lickers with a good memory will recall that we provided a hugely favourable review of Wishful Thinking when issued by Proper Records in the UK (PRPCD047), and pleasingly all round it sold in bundles. More recently, we have sold a bundle more as we were able to temporarily offer it at a discounted price in one of our campaign offers (an offer sadly now expired). The good news is that if you have enjoyed Wishful Thinking and albums released by the band subsequently (What Made Bob Holler and, most recently, Rendezvous In Rhythm), the albums included in this ‘two-fer’ are just as good, inspired as the later albums were by the western swing of Bob Wills, the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli and the great American songwriters such as George & Ira Gerschwin, Rodgers & Hart and Hoagy Carmichael. So, for such a ridiculously low price you get two complete albums of 28 great songs, played with technique, verve and spirit and with a fabulous sound throughout. Bargains like this don’t come along every day so get in on this while you can. You won’t regret it. Ask for FLOATM6168 - on offer at a special review price of only £8.45 + p&p if bought before 22 February 2 THE BACKBEAT OF ROCK AND ROLL Famous Flames 3CD - FLAMECD02 Link Wray, The Champs, The Ventures, The Fabulous Wailers, Freddie King, Ray Bryant Combo, James Booker, Paul Gayten, Sandy Nelson, Bill Haley, Little Walter, Dick Dale, Lee Allen and more. There are a bewildering number of compilations being issued these days focused on instrumentals that have variously influenced the development of early rock and roll. Most have their merits but this is on balance my favourite, providing as it does an impressive 94 track portable library of all the late 50s and early 60s instrumental sounds you will need. As with all the best of compilations, this includes a satisfying mix of era-defining numbers and rarer tracks and artists. Thankfully, it also spreads its net sufficiently wide across rock ‘n roll, R&B, jazz and undefinable oddities so that each track offer a departure from the last and your interest never wavers from the start to the end. Of the more familiar numbers you’d expect to be included, it was great to hear again the splendid guitar work-out of Walk, Don’t Run by The Ventures, Johnny And The Hurricanes’ propulsive Red River Rock and I, for one, never tire of hearing Tequila by The Champs. And familiar though it is, it was good to have Dave Brubeck’s Take Five included given the news of his recent passing. There are so many tracks here that it is unlikely that you won’t find plenty to enjoy and thrill whether you have heard them before or not. And, if you bought the label’s previous release (The First Rock And Roll Record - FLAMECD001), you will also know that the presentation is excellent, with a nice 24 page booklet with notes by Dave Henderson of Mojo magazine. I had heard little of Charlie prior to coming to this CD, despite his having an apparent 20 year career as a blues rock singer-songwriter and pianist who has played with Otis Grand, Linda Gail Lewis and others. From the first few bars of the opening track, Greed, however I just knew that I was going to be hooked. Over a dramatic and staccato opening riff are overlayed some fabulous horn charts that sound as though Charlie has struck a deal with Herb Albert to borrow his Tijuana Horn section (a sound I’ve always found exotically irresistible). By the time the boogie riff of Brixton Road had captured my full attention, I knew I wasn’t going anywhere until I’d heard the whole CD. And well worth the time it is too! Great songs, superbly played by a band that effortlessly move from blues based rock, reflective ballads and even a progressive rock closer that is immensely enjoyable (no, honestly!). At one point, the band even totally changes tempo mid-track for a fabulous jazz interlude. All in all a hugely satisfying CD that only suffers a little in that its variety makes it a little difficult to categorise or pigeon-hole. This is for me a plus point and comes highly recommended. A great night, Bloater and The Limits were tremendous (we even had a chat afterwards and found him to be a genuinely nice guy) and the support act was fantastic (John Lewis). A little known dance band led by Lovey (actually George R. Despite the age and the primitive recording apparatus used, these restorations are remarkably clear and thanks must go to the research work of Dick Spottswood for finding them and Richard Weize and Chris Zwarg for re-mastering them. 24 delightful tracks and 28 page booklet.
