RED LICK’S PLAY LISTS
What we’ve been grooving to in our quieter moments!!
JONATHAN RICHMAN: YOU’RE CRAZY FOR TAKING THE BUS (from
‘Vampire Girl ’ on Rounder 6190922). A hoot of a song where
the different transport preferences for touring are played out in
the lyrics, between the band (that chooses the speed and convenience
of flying to and from gigs) and Jonathan who enjoys
the real-life charm of taking the bus, people-watching and seeing
new towns and places. The lightweight rockabilly roll of the
music is just fine but it is the sheer eccentricity of Richman’s
lyrics that sets his world apart. Where else are you going to get a
chorus in a song that apes the roll call of a bus driver on a trip to
Nevada - ’It’s Salt Lake City, everybody off, with Elko, Wells and
Reno down the line’. Genius.
ART BLAKEY: THE WITCH DOCTOR (from ‘Voodoo In America
1926-1961’ on Fremeaux FA5375). Another great track from this
splendid set of blues, jazz, R&B and more that concerns itself
with the role in the life of African-Americans of hoodoo, voodoo,
magic spells, potions, mojos and other superstitions designed to
overcome life’s ills and difficulties. This is how I like my jazz, an
evocative and well-paced transportation to another time and
place where the vibes are hot, the cats are cool and the chicks
are groovy. No, not Hemel Hempstead!
HAMBONE WILLIE NEWBERN: ROLL AND TUMBLE BLUES (from
‘The Return Of The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of’ on Yazoo
YAZCD2203). A superb and early version (1929, if memory
serves) of a song (and riff) that was to go on to become one of
the staples of the repertoire of many blues guitarists through the
years, from Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters through to
Cream and beyond. Even if this hadn’t been the case, this track
would still stand as a beautifully paced, sung and played slice of
country blues. A tragically under-recorded bluesman who thankfully
has been brought back to our attention on this magnificent
set, alongside many other worthy blues, country and folk artists
deserving of bigger and better reputations.
JOHN LEWIS: REASON ENOUGH (from ‘Live In Cardiff’ on Press-
Tone PT001CD). A great song superbly sung and played by one
of the best UK rockabilly acts currently on the circuit. The fact
that John lives local to Red Lick definitely has its advantages,
like the other week when we caught his set as the support act to
Big Boy Bloater in Cardiff. Sterling stuff. You probably recall we
reviewed his latest album a year or so back (The Billy Banks
Sessions) and this went down a storm among those of you who
bought it. This live album preceded The Billy Banks Sessions but
is just as good.
