Observer Reporter
A fourth-place fi nish at the Canadian
Wheelchair Curling Championships
didn’t sit right with Alison Duddy who
threw lead stones for Team BC.
“We had higher expectations,” Duddy
said.
“It was a tough pill to swallow.
“We were devastated.”
It took a bit of time, but Duddy has also
come to appreciate the magnitude of her
accomplishment at the Canadian Wheelchair
Curling championships in Edmonton,
March 20 – 27.
Not many curlers, or other athletes for
that matter, have the opportunity to rep-
resent their province at national championships,
never mind two years in a row.
“I’m honoured to put on my Team BC
shirt and jacket and represent my province,”
she said.
“Besides, a fourth place fi nish at the nationals
is nothing to scoff at either.”
Duddy admitted being on a mission to
win gold this year after fi nishing second
at the national championships last year.
Expectations were also raised given
this year’s Team BC skip, Gary Cormack,
was a member of the 2006 Paralympic
gold-medal team and was defending national
champion along with second Vince
Miele.
Frank LaBounty, throwing third stones
for Team BC, was a two-time Canadian
champion and was on the team, with
Duddy, that fi nished second at last year’s
national wheelchair curling championships.
Team BC fi nished with a record of 6-3
thanks to two wins on the fi nal day of
round-robin action that secured a fourth
place and a spot in the 3/4 page playoff
game.
Unfortunately Team BC fell 6-4 to Team
Manitoba in a game Duddy described as,
“sloppy by both teams.”
Neither team, Duddy said, played their
best curling.
“It was a game of misses,” she added.
Manitoba took an early 3-0 lead against
Team BC taking a single in the fi rst end
with the hammer and then stealing one in
Team BC got on the board in the fourth
another point in the fi fth end.
With the hammer, Manitoba scored
three in the sixth end to take a 6-2 lead.
Team BC countered with two points in
the seventh end, but that’s as close as they
got as they ran out of rocks in the eighth
end.
Given the experience on Team BC,
nerves were not a problem, Duddy said,
adding they were upbeat and positive until
the very last end.
“We didn’t play our best,” Duddy said.
“We just didn’t come through when it
counted.”
There’s always
next year
from A21
Not being able to
play at the level they
knew they could,
made the loss more
diffi cult to accept,
Duddy said.
Manitoba went on
to win the national
wheelchair curling
title, marking the fi rst
time in four years a
team from B.C. does
not hold the title.
The one difference
this year, Duddy
said, was some of
the teams they faced
had been together for
several years.
By comparison, the
roster for Team BC
changes every year.
Duddy recognized
the importance of
having experience
as a team, but at the
same time pointed to
the skill of Cormack
as a skip in knowing
and understanding
the strengths of
his teammates and
playing to those
strengths.
“He was amazing
that way,” Duddy
said.
Nonetheless, the
point has not gone
unappreciated by
Team BC as they
are considering
participating in an
international bonspiel
in Maine in July.
“We’re looking for
ways to play more as
a team,” Duddy said.
In addition to the
curling, the social
aspect of the national
championships
was an uplifting
experience that
included various
social activities,
Duddy said.
Last year as a rookie
and everywhere
you go, that part
is pretty cool”
Alison Duddy, Team BC
on the national scene,
Duddy admits she
was a little reserved.
This year, she was
looking forward
to meeting up with
members of other
teams she had met
last year and enjoying
fully the social aspect
of the national
championship that
included a hospitality
room and a band.
“They treated us
like gold,” Duddy
said of the organizers
and their team of
volunteers.
Every game, Duddy
said, members of
opposite teams were
chit-chatting between
shots, enjoying not
only the competition
but the camaraderie
among competitors.
Of special note
was the camaraderie
of teammate Frank
LaBounty, who
was awarded the
sportsmanship award
for the tournament.
Another important
aspect of the
nationals for Duddy,
is the opportunity to
socialize with other
wheelchair athletes.
“To go to a place
where there are
50 people rolling
around the hotel and
everywhere you go,
that part is pretty
cool,” Duddy said.
The trip to
the national
championships
would not have been
possible without her
sponsors, Clayton’s
Funeral Home,
Regency Chrysler,
Integris Credit Union,
Ultimate Trophies
and Engraving, Make
Traxx Recreation
and Supersave Gas,
Duddy said.
“Sponsor’s are such
a huge part of this.”
With the emotions
of the national
championship
receding, Duddy
is now focused on
resting a tired body
and mind, but soon
will begin to focus
on next season and
another chance
at the Canadian
championships.
“I hope I get to go
back next year,” she
said.
Observer Reporter
Eli Jarvis and Lane
Van De Wetering of
Quesnel have been
selected to move on
to the U17 BC Cup.
Jarvis and Van De
Wetering are two of
only 120 U17 hockey
players chosen
from across B.C. to
participate in the
annual BC Cup.
“I’m just working
hard trying to make
the team,” a modest
Jarvis said at the
North District camp
in Prince George,
April 8 – 10.
Part of the fun in
participating in the
North district camp
was getting to watch
and play with some
of the best hockey
players in the north,
Jarvis said.
Jarvis pointed to
several Cariboo
Cougar teammates,
including linemate
Chase Witala.
Jarvis’ selection
to attend the North
District U17 camp
was well deserved
as the 16-year-old
forward collected 15
goals and 19 assists in
40 games in his fi rst
season with the major
midget Cougars.
“It was a lot of fun,”
Jarvis said.
“I made some good
friends that will last a
lifetime.”
Playing with the
Cougars, Jarvis said,
also afforded him
an opportunity to
improve his skills as
a hockey player and
to learn from older
players.
The pace of the
game was also an
adjustment Jarvis
said he had to make
in the early days of
the season with the
Cougars.
Jarvis’ performance
with the Cougars
not only impressed
BC Hockey scouts,
but also the Quesnel
Millionaires coaching
staff.
With the injury bug
going through the
Mills dressing room
late in the season,
Jarvis was called in to
fi ll in for a game.
“I haven’t decided
yet,” Jarvis said of
where he will play
for the 2011-2012
season.
“I have a lot
of options, but I
The pace of the
game at the U17
North District camp
is something that
also crept up on Van
De Wetering, but
he appreciated the
faster pace of play
and enjoyed playing
with the cream of the
crop of northern B.C.
hockey players.
A Grade 10 student
at Correlieu senior
secondary school,
Van De Wetering is
not new to the BC
participated in the
U16 camp last year.
From that
experience he knows
exactly what he has
to do to impress the
Van De Wetering said
of what he would
have to do to make
the BC Cup roster.
Both of those
elements are already
part of Van De
Wetering’s game and
he admits there is one
SCORPIO: Launch a fresh
idea or new project
Your birthday: Fri., Apr. 22, 2011
There are some strong indications that you could make
an important shift in your thinking in the near future,
which will allow you to open up a number of new
social and commercial opportunities. Things could get
very interesting!
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) -- Listen to what others
have to say, but pay heed to your own thinking as
well. Between the two, you should get the best answer
to a situation that needs resolving.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) -- Tackle your most
important jobs early on, along with the ones you least
like doing. As the day grinds on and wears you out,
you may not be as careful as you need to be for the
more tedious tasks.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) -- Just when you need it
the most, the warmth and sociability you’ll unexpectedly
experience will help restore your faith in mankind.
People will treat you like the winner you are.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) -- People won’t dump their
assignments on you just because they think you’re
weak and won’t complain, but because they’ll see you
are more competent than they are in handling onerous
assignments.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) -- The organizational and
managerial skills you possess are exceptionally prominent.
It won’t be hard for you to nd multiple ways to
put them to outstanding uses.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) -- Your boss might be instrumental
in giving you the opportunity to show your
stuff. Make the most of this chance to do a thorough
job on something that’s dropped in your lap.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) -- If you have a fresh
idea or new project, this is the day to launch it. There
are strong indications that you will be exceptionally
fortunate when it comes to untested endeavors.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) -- You could be
remarkably perceptive when it comes to your hunches
or intuition, especially concerning anything of a material
nature. Act on any strong signals you get.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) -- Even though you
may feel a need to be around certain people, nd some
time for yourself whenever you can. You’ll function
better if you can take a few breaks occasionally.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) -- When you least expect
it, a couple of secret ambitions could be ful lled
in some unusual ways. Make the most of this happy
day.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) -- Owing to the logical,
realistic outlook you’ll have, you will be able to de ne
certain developments very precisely, keeping all negatives
in proper perspective.
ARIES (March 21-April 19) -- It’s quite likely that
as the day wears on, you’ll get the chance that you’ve
been looking for to change certain conditions more to
your liking. In your mind, they’ll be for the better.
LOCAL POLITICS
City hikes taxes, recognizes volunteers
Council
gave three
readings
to our Five-Year
Financial and Tax
Rates Bylaws.
Right now we’re
looking at a total
average tax increase
of 4.1% to most
classes, including
residential.
That equals
about $25 in the
municipal portion
for the average house
assessed at $164,260.
This is based upon
Quesnel’s average
assessment increase of
4.3%.
So, if your
assessment increased
by more than the
average, the tax
increase is more than
the average.
If it is less, then the
tax increase is less.
One part of the tax
rate discussion that
there seems to be
some confusion about
is frontage taxes.
This year, city
council increased
frontage taxes by
about two per cent.
I’ve been hearing
from some people
that they feel the
application of
frontage tax isn’t
Our need
to have a
defi nitive
plan to revitalize
B.C.’s forest sector
has been lost in
the political noise
reverberating around
us just now.
As a result of forest
policy changes, the
pine beetle epidemic
and changes in the
marketplace, B.C.’s
traditional forest
sector is returning
minimal benefi ts
to government and
communities and is
employing the fewest
workers in its long
history as one of BC’s
equitable because
some residents pay it,
while others don’t.
Every person using
the city’s sewer pays
frontage, while about
80 per cent of water
users pay frontage.
There’s a reason
behind the 20 per
cent who don’t pay
water frontage.
When water was
extended to South
Hills as part of the
boundary expansion,
it was understood
that those residents
would not pay
frontage taxes until
the capital costs of
the extension were
paid.
Residents pay parcel
taxes ranging from
$100 to $1,225
per year, with the
majority paying $520.
These funds go
towards paying off
the costs of extending
the water service.
Most will fi nish
paying that debt in
2019 or 2020, with
those on the DVC
system fi nished in
2027.
So regardless of the
decisions that were
made in the past,
we have a bylaw
in place that states
key economic drivers.
The forest sector
no longer generates
enough revenue
for government to
cover the costs of
the oversight of
the industry, never
mind creating any
additional money to
re-invest in our forest
ecosystems.
Fortunately, an
exciting opportunity
exists which can
revitalize the
traditional forest
sector, add whole
new manufacturing
opportunities with
good paying jobs, and
enable us to re-invest
Mary Sjostrrom
MAYOR’S MESSAGE
those residents who
pay parcel taxes in
South Quesnel will
not pay frontage until
the system expansion
debt is paid off.
The bylaws will be
presented for fi nal
readings at the May 3
Council meeting.
Volunteer Citizen
of the Year
We had an amazing
evening at the
Legion on Tuesday
as we celebrated the
announcement of
the 2010 Volunteer
Citizen of the Year.
Dianne Greenwood,
our long-time coordinator
of the Good
Cheer program was
named the winner.
Dianne does a
fantastic job of
raising awareness,
gathering donations
and distributing
goods to those who
need it.
We are very proud
Bob Simpson, MLA
in our forests. This
new opportunity is
also one of the best
ways to truly address
the challenge of
climate change.
In a recent study
commissioned by the
Forest Productions
Association
of Canada, FP
of our 2010 winner.
I also offer
congratulations to the
other nominees, Sheri
Coles, Liz Miller and
Wes Sissons.
When you have a
ballot full of worthy
candidates like this
year’s, it’s got to be
a diffi cult decisionmaking
process for
the committee.
All of them do
amazing things for
the community.
We also gave the
Lifetime Achievement
Award to Janice
Butler, Cathy
Heinzelman and Bev
Pontius.
This trio was
recognized for all they
do to promote theatre
and the arts in our
community, especially
their work with the
Youth Entertaining
Kersley Musical
theatre.
On top of that,
we auctioned off
the amazing fl oral
centerpieces that
were prepared by our
new sponsor, Blumko
Flower Art.
Owner Kobus
Westraadt, raised
more than $580 for
a “blueprint that
would see the (forest)
world in innovation
and give Canada an
advantage in world
markets.” A world
market estimated to
be as much as $200
billion.
The opportunity:
bio-products made
addition to traditional
potential bio-products
include: clothing,
On behalf of
Council, our sincere
thanks go to the
the chair of the
Ron Paull, and his
dedicated team of
former Volunteer
who help make this
Many thanks as
And a huge thank
you to the Cariboo
Tracey Roberts and
her staff for all they
This was a
great evening and
celebration of
volunteerism.
Congratulations
Congratulations
to Coun. Peter
Couldwell who
received his BC
Community
Achievement
Award this week
at a celebration in
Victoria.
This is a welldeserved
award
for Pete, who
products for the
health industry.
The FP Innovations
report concludes
that these new
bio-products are
“best achieved by
integrating their
production with
the traditional
forest industry.” By
coupling this new
industry with bioenergy
facilities, the
job potential can be
improved fi ve-fold.
The benefi ts would
also extend to our
forests, as this new
bio-industry would
allow us to maximize
the use of wood
has contributed
signifi cant volunteer
hours and helped
raise more than $2.8
million for a wide
range of fundraisers,
not to mention
serving in his 20th
year on city council.
He was one of 36
outstanding British
Columbians named
today in Vancouver.
Pete received a
certifi cate as well as
a medallion designed
by B.C. artist Robert
Davidson.
I’m going to make
sure he brings it to
a televised Council
meeting to show it
off!
Earth Day
Challenge
Last week I
mentioned there
would be an Earth
Day Run on Saturday
April 23.
Unfortunately,
there have been
few registrants, so
organizers had to call
it off.
Shiraoi-Sendai
Fundraising
We’re having great
success with our
fundraising efforts to
waste being left in the
bush while enabling
us to manage forest
ecosystems in a way
which could make
them more adaptable
to a changing climate.
BC is best positioned
to take advantage of
this opportunity: we
have the most modern
and effi cient mills,
we’re just beginning
to take advantage of
bio-energy, and our
forests are publicly
owned.
What we need is the
political leadership to
seize the moment.
This week I’ve
written to the Premier
support Sendai, the
sister city in Japan
to our sister city of
Shiraoi.
To date we’ve raised
a little more than
$9,000, which will
go a long way
towards providing
much-needed
everyday items such
as water, noodles and
toiletries.
Thanks to the
people at North Star
Church who held a
concert and raised
a little more than
$2,600.
And thanks to
the Rotary Club of
Quesnel for their
$1,000 contribution.
And thanks of
course to all of you
who are dropping
