6 SHIPYARD HISTORY From paddle steamers to the first passenger ship The first passenger ship of the shipyard: The Triton paddle steamer, year of construction 1874. The freight and passenger steamer Graf Goetzen, year of construction 1914. This MEYER WERFT ship gained worldwide fame in the Hollywood film African Queen. The ship was broken down into parts after being completed and was taken to the African Lake Tanganyika where it was put together again under the supervision of MEYER WERFT engineers. The ship is still in use under the name of Liemba after almost 100 years. The Elbe 1 lightship was completed under the toughest conditions, shortly before the end of World War II. Today the museum ship can be admired in Cuxhaven. The Mauritius was delivered in 1955. The ship transported both freight and passengers. The Mauritius was a reference ship for new international markets, e.g. Indonesia. One of the Frisia ships, which were built by MEYER WERFT for the ferry link to the East Frisian Islands.
Ships which made history right from the start . . . SHIPYARD HISTORY The first MEYER WERFT cruise ship. In 1985 the shipyard successfully entered the field of cruise ship building with the Homeric for the shipping company Home Lines. Never before had a ship of this size been launched sideways.
