The Correlieu Clansmen came up<br />

with one of <strong>the</strong>ir better defensive performances<br />

of <strong>the</strong> year Friday night.<br />

But it was easily <strong>the</strong>ir worst offensive<br />

show<strong>in</strong>g and it resulted <strong>in</strong> a lowscor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

67-53 loss to <strong>the</strong> Williams<br />

Lake Cougars <strong>in</strong> senior boys' basketball<br />

action.<br />

: The. defeat was <strong>the</strong> fourth <strong>in</strong> a row<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Clan, who have now won just<br />

four of <strong>the</strong>ir 11 games so far.<br />

Correlieu led 35-33 at <strong>the</strong> half but<br />

could score just six po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third<br />

quarter, allow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Cougars to<br />

jump to a 57-41 lead go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>al period.<br />

It was.more than enough for <strong>the</strong><br />

w<strong>in</strong>. .<br />

"We came out <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> second half,<br />

after not play<strong>in</strong>g too badly, and just<br />

, stopped," said Clansmen coach Doug<br />

Service. "We've done it <strong>in</strong> every ball<br />

game we've been ahead <strong>in</strong>.<br />

"I don't know what it is. It must be<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g mental."<br />

Williams Lake went ahead early <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> game before <strong>the</strong> Clansmen got<br />

warmed up.<br />

The Cougars led by as many as 10<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first quarter before Correlieu's<br />

shots started f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> range, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Williams Lake lead was soon erased.<br />

But after a decent first half, Cor-<br />

, relieu's offense simply self-destructed<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> third quarter.<br />

Grant Williams and <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

George Spruce K<strong>in</strong>gs may talk a good<br />

game, but <strong>the</strong> Quesnel Millionaires<br />

play a better one.<br />

Williams was full of confidence go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Wednesday night's contest at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Quesnel Arena. He even went as<br />

far as say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Millionaires should<br />

film <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gs so <strong>the</strong>y'd have<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g to study from.<br />

But it was Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George which did<br />

<strong>the</strong> study<strong>in</strong>g and Quesnel which did<br />

<strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> Millionaires came<br />

up with a 5-4 victory.<br />

"I don't th<strong>in</strong>k I would have said we<br />

had <strong>the</strong> talent <strong>the</strong>y do at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> season," said Quesnel<br />

coach Bob .lohnston. "But now I<br />

th<strong>in</strong>k we do. We're play<strong>in</strong>g well, and<br />

we'll cont<strong>in</strong>ue to play well."<br />

The w<strong>in</strong> was <strong>the</strong> seventh <strong>in</strong> a row<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Millionaires and <strong>the</strong> first on<br />

home ice aga<strong>in</strong>st-<strong>the</strong> Spruce K<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

and it gave Quesnel a legitimate<br />

chance of catch<strong>in</strong>g Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George for<br />

first place.<br />

Quesnel now has 37 po<strong>in</strong>ts, four<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> Spruce K<strong>in</strong>gs with 41.<br />

Each team has n<strong>in</strong>e games rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

"I th<strong>in</strong>k we can catch Pr<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

George," said Johnston. "But it will<br />

depend on how we do' aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie. If<br />

you're not careful, ei<strong>the</strong>r one will<br />

show you how to play <strong>the</strong> game."<br />

out of bounds or thrown to Williams<br />

difficulty penetrat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> Cougar<br />

defense.<br />

And after conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Cougars'<br />

number one threat, centre Rod<br />

Schlitt, for most of <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g half,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Clansmen let him loose for 10 of<br />

his 14 po<strong>in</strong>ts on <strong>the</strong> game.<br />

"It seems like as soon as we start<br />

it," said Service. "In <strong>the</strong> first half we<br />

penetrated, we scored from <strong>the</strong> outside<br />

Williams Lake; pressed <strong>in</strong>termittently<br />

although <strong>the</strong> Clansmen beat it most<br />

of ihe time, it seemed to throw <strong>the</strong>m<br />

off enough to keep <strong>the</strong>ir offence from<br />

gett<strong>in</strong>g untracked.<br />

"We made a lot of rookie<br />

mistakes," said Service. "What it<br />

comes down to is lack of experience.<br />

"I still th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>re's a lot of talent<br />

<strong>the</strong>re,' but we just have to put it<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r. We just need some more experience."<br />

David Miller was <strong>the</strong> top threat for<br />

Correlieu with 14 po<strong>in</strong>ts for <strong>the</strong><br />

game.<br />

The Clan's next action is February<br />

6 and 7 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Duchess <strong>Park</strong> Condors<br />

Tournament at Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George.<br />

day.<br />

Most of <strong>the</strong> play was <strong>in</strong> Quesnel's<br />

end, but <strong>the</strong> Spruce K<strong>in</strong>gs had trouble<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ish<strong>in</strong>g off <strong>the</strong>ir plays and could on-<br />

' ly manage goals by Jim Dodds and<br />

Terry Brand.<br />

Kev<strong>in</strong> Hames had opened <strong>the</strong> scor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for Quesnel on a power play when<br />

he directed Dave Purmal's center<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pass past Alan Lor<strong>in</strong>g, but Dodds<br />

tied it m<strong>in</strong>utes later on a slapshot<br />

from <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

Brand gave Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George <strong>the</strong> lead<br />

mid-way through <strong>the</strong> period on <strong>the</strong><br />

power play when he flipped a rebound<br />

over a sprawl<strong>in</strong>g Cliff<br />

Sherstabetoff, but Ken Qu<strong>in</strong>ney tied<br />

it up with just 30 seconds left before<br />

<strong>in</strong>termission.<br />

Qu<strong>in</strong>ney had three great chances<br />

before scor<strong>in</strong>g. First he whistled a<br />

shot off <strong>the</strong> post that Lor<strong>in</strong>g may<br />

have got a piece of, <strong>the</strong>n seconds later<br />

Mike Enemark sent him <strong>in</strong> alone with<br />

a nice pass but Lor<strong>in</strong>g stopped him,<br />

and f<strong>in</strong>ally he took his own rebound<br />

at <strong>the</strong> side of <strong>the</strong> net and slid it <strong>in</strong>.<br />

The goal was exactly what <strong>the</strong><br />

Millionaires needed to wake <strong>the</strong>m up.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> second period Quesnel came<br />

out with one ofits best show<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

<strong>the</strong> season.<br />

"We owned <strong>the</strong> second period,"<br />

said Johnston. "It was just <strong>the</strong> opposite<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George game.<br />

Theire we had a great first period and<br />

a poor second. Here we had a bad<br />

first and a good second."<br />

The Millionaires fired 19 drives at<br />

Lor<strong>in</strong>g and passed <strong>the</strong> puck with<br />

authority. Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George managed<br />

just eight shots on Sherstabetoff.<br />

But thanks to Lor<strong>in</strong>g, Quesnel<br />

managed just one goal <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> period.<br />

Lor<strong>in</strong>g was outstand<strong>in</strong>g as he stop- ,<br />

ped Hames <strong>in</strong> close at least twice and<br />

robbed Jim Sales with a skate save on<br />

a shot tagged for <strong>the</strong> far side.<br />

But he had some help, as Qu<strong>in</strong>ney<br />

rapped ano<strong>the</strong>r shot off <strong>the</strong> goalpost<br />

and Len Sloan hit <strong>the</strong> pipe after he<br />

had beaten Lor<strong>in</strong>g on a breakaway. .<br />

It was Sales who f<strong>in</strong>ally beat <strong>the</strong><br />

Spruce K<strong>in</strong>g goalie when his sho*<br />

from a bad angle found <strong>the</strong> net.<br />

. Brad Crossan tied it for Pr<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

George on <strong>the</strong> power play mid-way<br />

through <strong>the</strong> third with Dave Purmal<br />

off for hold<strong>in</strong>g, but Ken Fenton gave<br />

<strong>the</strong> Millionaires <strong>the</strong> lead aga<strong>in</strong> less<br />

than a m<strong>in</strong>ute later on a backhand.<br />

Mike Enemark scored what proved<br />

to be <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ner on <strong>the</strong> power play<br />

with Pr<strong>in</strong>ce George's Ed Azzara off<br />

for <strong>in</strong>terference and Evan Hynes notchecf<br />

yet ano<strong>the</strong>r power play goal to<br />

make it close, but <strong>the</strong> Millionaires<br />

hung on for <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>.<br />

"We're tickled p<strong>in</strong>k about it," says<br />

The Correlieu boys team f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

Gordon Mattison had <strong>the</strong> next best<br />

Swanson says <strong>the</strong> QSBL had expressed<br />

a desire to play host to <strong>the</strong><br />

tournament as early as November,<br />

when it approached BCABA president<br />

Al Elliot with <strong>the</strong> idea at <strong>the</strong><br />

sport bodies' annual convention<br />

• "We gave <strong>the</strong> president an <strong>in</strong>dication<br />

that we would come back to <strong>the</strong><br />

Quesnel's was one of two bids for<br />

<strong>the</strong> championship at <strong>the</strong> conference,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> only one considered serious-.<br />

Now that <strong>the</strong> first hurdle is over <strong>the</strong><br />

league will start work<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> second:<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Swanson says <strong>the</strong> tournament<br />

budget will run between $8,000 and<br />

$10,000, most of which will be accommodation<br />

costs which <strong>the</strong> host<br />

team must pick up.<br />

In addition, <strong>the</strong> QSBL will be<br />

upgrad<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> field and build<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

"We're consider<strong>in</strong>g a number of •<br />

"Right now we're th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

Esso had f<strong>in</strong>ished and Dick Irv<strong>in</strong>'s<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g head filled <strong>the</strong> screen, he turn-;<br />

ed to <strong>the</strong> bartender. '<br />

"Ya know," he said as he watched<br />

<strong>the</strong> bartender dry<strong>in</strong>g'a glass, "I just<br />

•. can't see how people stand to watch<br />

<strong>the</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ky little hockey teams around<br />

here when <strong>the</strong>y can see <strong>the</strong> pros any<br />

time <strong>the</strong>y want right on <strong>the</strong> tube.<br />

"I mean, like who wants to see a<br />

bunch of amateurs when you can<br />

watch <strong>the</strong> Canucks?"<br />

The bartender said noth<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

, kept dry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> glass,- so <strong>the</strong> young<br />

man went on.<br />

"People around here are always<br />

compla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> lousy support<br />

<strong>the</strong>y get for <strong>the</strong>ir stupid gym teams<br />

and figure skat<strong>in</strong>g teams and basket:<br />

ball teams arid God knows what else.<br />

"Why <strong>the</strong> hell should I get off my<br />

butt to go watch <strong>the</strong>m when I can see<br />

real sports without leav<strong>in</strong>g my liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

room?"<br />

The bartender just shrugged his<br />

shoulders, but <strong>the</strong> old man turned<br />

and spoke.<br />

"Son, I th<strong>in</strong>k you've got someth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to learn about amateur sports.<br />

"You seem to be compar<strong>in</strong>g apples<br />

and oranges, as it <strong>were</strong>. 'You th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong><br />

teams around here should provide<br />

you with <strong>the</strong> same k<strong>in</strong>d of enterta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

as those overpaid charlatans up<br />

• <strong>the</strong>re," and he po<strong>in</strong>ted to <strong>the</strong> TV<br />

"I want to see <strong>the</strong><br />

best football I can"<br />

screen, where <strong>the</strong> Canucks <strong>were</strong> just<br />

return<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> ice.<br />

"Well, why not?" said <strong>the</strong> young<br />

man. "I want to see <strong>the</strong> best hockey<br />

or basketball or football I can.<br />

What's wrong with that.?"<br />

The old man smiled and shook his<br />

head. He looked at <strong>the</strong> young man as<br />

a teacher might- look on a student<br />

who has been given <strong>the</strong> answer but<br />

still does not understand.<br />

"Noth<strong>in</strong>g," he said. "But you're<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> wrong th<strong>in</strong>g if that's<br />

what you seek <strong>in</strong> amateur sport.<br />

"Aniateur sport is not <strong>the</strong> Seattle.<br />

Supersonics and <strong>the</strong> Portland<br />

Trailblazers scor<strong>in</strong>g almost every time<br />

<strong>the</strong>y go down <strong>the</strong> court, never :smil<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

never laugh<strong>in</strong>g, just go<strong>in</strong>g on and<br />

on like programmed computers; it is<br />

<strong>the</strong> Correlieu Nuggets, scor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sometimes, miss<strong>in</strong>g sometimes; but'.<br />

always with <strong>the</strong> frustration and exuberance<br />

only <strong>the</strong> young can show.<br />

"It is Susan Lowe, one of <strong>the</strong> Nugget<br />

substitute players, com<strong>in</strong>g off <strong>the</strong><br />

bench to send a 25 ft. shot, launched<br />

more with a prayer than skill,<br />

through <strong>the</strong> hoop <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Goldpan<br />

tournament.<br />

"It is <strong>the</strong> cheer that went up from<br />

<strong>the</strong> crowd when she made it, and <strong>the</strong><br />

smiles and laughter on <strong>the</strong> faces of<br />

her teammates as <strong>the</strong>y congratulated<br />

her, and <strong>the</strong> gr<strong>in</strong> on her own face<br />

which lasted for five m<strong>in</strong>utes afterward.<br />

"Amateur sport is Al Glendenn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Kamloops Cowboys, barely<br />

able to conta<strong>in</strong> his laughter after his<br />

teammate had just scored on his own<br />

goaltender.<br />

"It is <strong>the</strong> thrill of watch<strong>in</strong>g people<br />

whose <strong>in</strong>tensity and excitement comes<br />

soley from <strong>the</strong> sheer enjoyment of<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> game, not from cash<br />

bonuses for goals scored.<br />

"Do amateur players show <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

devotion to <strong>the</strong> game by sitt<strong>in</strong>g out a<br />

year for more money, like <strong>the</strong> Sonics'<br />

Gus Williams?<br />

"Would Ken Gassoff sit out <strong>the</strong><br />

rest of <strong>the</strong> season to get more beer <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Kangaroos' dress<strong>in</strong>g room?"<br />

The young man looked at him<br />

sheepishly.<br />

"You're lucky," said <strong>the</strong> old man,<br />

"You're young. There is still a chance<br />

for you to learn to understand, I just<br />

hope it isn't too late." '<br />

With that, he got up and walked<br />

away.<br />

And as he walked out <strong>the</strong> door, <strong>the</strong><br />

young man thought he saw a glimmer<br />

of light flash around <strong>the</strong> old man's<br />

head.<br />

He shrugged, took a sip of his beer, •<br />

and turned back to <strong>the</strong> hockey game,<br />

"It is a stiff course and<br />

"They go <strong>in</strong>to everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Poul<strong>in</strong> can have up to 15<br />

children at one given time<br />

but f<strong>in</strong>ds eight to be <strong>the</strong><br />

perfect number with a maximum<br />

for <strong>the</strong> whole week<br />

that means eight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

eight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon<br />

and so on.<br />

Some children come two<br />

days a week, some four<br />

days and some three. A few<br />

come for five and a half<br />

days a week, just <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g. These are <strong>the</strong><br />

children of mo<strong>the</strong>rs who<br />

work part-time.<br />

"The majority of<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>rs who br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

children here don't work,"<br />

Poul<strong>in</strong> expla<strong>in</strong>ed.<br />

"Most of <strong>the</strong>m come<br />

because <strong>the</strong>ir parents want a<br />

place for <strong>the</strong>ir children to<br />

go, to meet and learn to get<br />

along with o<strong>the</strong>r children.<br />

Perhaps <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>rs and<br />

sisters are at school and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y are pretty much alone<br />

at home, except for <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r. If <strong>the</strong>ir bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

and sisters are much older,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y don't have a lot <strong>in</strong><br />

common. This gets <strong>the</strong>m<br />

out and helps <strong>the</strong>m to relate<br />

to o<strong>the</strong>r children <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

age, and it's a. sort of<br />

preparation for<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dergarten."<br />

"They must be three<br />

until five and a half. I have<br />

two children now who are<br />

five. They just happened to<br />

miss out on k<strong>in</strong>dergarten.<br />

December 31 is <strong>the</strong> cut-off<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir birthdays .<strong>were</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

January. I run till <strong>the</strong> end<br />

of June so <strong>the</strong>y will be five<br />

and a half."<br />

The school operates from<br />

Monday to Friday morn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Poul<strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ds she has to take<br />

a half-day off on Friday<br />

afternoon just to get th<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

done that can't be done on<br />

<strong>the</strong> weekend. She likes<br />

children and has always<br />

worked with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Before com<strong>in</strong>g to B.C. a<br />

year ago, <strong>the</strong> family lived <strong>in</strong><br />

Alberta and Poul<strong>in</strong>, who is<br />

a registered practical nurse,<br />

worked <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> childrens'<br />

hospital <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

Poul<strong>in</strong> is quietly patient<br />

yet firm with <strong>the</strong> children<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y respect her.<br />

"If I have two children<br />

who are quarrelsome, I get<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to try and talk it out.<br />

For <strong>in</strong>stance, if one happens<br />

to hit ano<strong>the</strong>r, I will<br />

have <strong>the</strong> one who was hit<br />

say, gee, that really hurt<br />

and I don't want you to do<br />

that to me, and it makes <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r child th<strong>in</strong>k, yes, it<br />

does hurt, when you hit someone."<br />

"Then you have <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

one say, well, I was play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with that toy first, <strong>the</strong>n it<br />

comes back to what started<br />

<strong>the</strong> fight <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place.<br />

They can relate to that<br />

because you are mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>m aware of <strong>the</strong>ir problem,<br />

and it is <strong>the</strong>ir problem,<br />

not yours. From that,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y can work out <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

solution. The child can<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r give up <strong>the</strong> toy or<br />

<strong>the</strong>y might decide to share<br />

it. Then <strong>the</strong>y can't say, <strong>the</strong><br />

teacher always gives you <strong>the</strong><br />

toy. This way <strong>the</strong>y have<br />

worked it out <strong>the</strong>mselves."<br />

"Children don't usually<br />

give <strong>in</strong> if <strong>the</strong>y want<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g, it has to be what<br />

<strong>the</strong>y want or <strong>the</strong>y will let it<br />

go. Sometimes shar<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

alright with <strong>the</strong>m. That way<br />

<strong>the</strong>y get to use <strong>the</strong> toy some<br />

of <strong>the</strong> time because <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r way <strong>the</strong>y <strong>were</strong> not gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to play with it at all."<br />

An average morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

starts at n<strong>in</strong>e. They take off<br />

coats and hang <strong>the</strong>m among<br />

<strong>the</strong> rows of little hooks <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> hallway, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>y put<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>door shoes and •<br />

its freeplay for an hour.<br />

"I will try to have a structured<br />

art activity <strong>in</strong> that<br />

hour," says Poul<strong>in</strong>.<br />

"I'm 46 years old and<br />

have reached <strong>the</strong> crawl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

stage. Now it's time for me<br />

to learn to walk aga<strong>in</strong>."<br />

• These words ard typical<br />

of Turner's courageous<br />

spirit and clear-sighted<br />

ability to come to grips with<br />

a major handicap.<br />

Many diabetics like<br />

Turner have encountered<br />

circulation problems but<br />

serious trouble started when<br />

an abscess on one of her<br />

feet refused to heal and<br />

subsequently <strong>the</strong> leg had to<br />

be amputated below <strong>the</strong><br />

knee.<br />

Eventually, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r leg<br />

experienced similar pro<br />

blems and was amputated<br />

as well. In . addition, she<br />

also suffered several heart<br />

attacks.<br />

When many might have<br />

despaired at so much<br />

misfortune, Turner viewed<br />

<strong>the</strong> situation as a learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

experience.<br />

She expressed<br />

thankfulness that she was<br />

able to th<strong>in</strong>k, clearly and<br />

still be able to do a lot of<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs for herself, unlike<br />

many of <strong>the</strong> patients<br />

around her.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g her stay at St.<br />

Paul's Hospital <strong>in</strong> Van<br />

couver, Turner coped with<br />

<strong>in</strong>term<strong>in</strong>able exam<strong>in</strong>ations,<br />

<strong>the</strong> bedpan blues and<br />

boredom by sharpen<strong>in</strong>g her<br />

wit and <strong>in</strong>dulg<strong>in</strong>g her sense<br />

of humour.<br />

She overcame many<br />

awkward moments by<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g a keen sense of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ridiculous. Turner had a<br />

great deal of praise for <strong>the</strong><br />

excellent care by <strong>the</strong><br />

hospital staff. She especial<br />

ly enjoyed hear<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

friends from Quesnel.<br />

"I had lots of help to<br />

help me through it. I sure<br />

didn't do it alone. The"<br />

THE SCOUTS CLUB held a go<strong>in</strong>g away party for Norma Turner, who left her home <strong>in</strong> Bouchie Lake to receive fur<br />

<strong>the</strong>r medical treatment at G.F. Strong Hospital <strong>in</strong> Vancouver. Her husband'Bob and her son Robbie help com<br />

memorate <strong>the</strong> occasion. Mrs. Turner has had to make major adjustments <strong>in</strong> her life after both lower legs <strong>were</strong> am<br />

putated because of <strong>in</strong>fection. , .<br />

nuises.<strong>were</strong> super people. A<br />

couple of m<strong>in</strong>isters came<br />

and talked to me and our<br />

friends <strong>in</strong> Quesnel sent<br />

cards and flowers. With so<br />

many people like that<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d you, you just don't<br />

let <strong>the</strong>m down," Turner<br />

said.<br />

Turner learned to deal<br />

with <strong>the</strong>' many frustrations<br />

with patience and honesty.<br />

"If handicapped people<br />

get frustrated to <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y cry, let <strong>the</strong>m!<br />

It's better than go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

around with a lump <strong>in</strong> your<br />

throat. It doesn't hurt.<br />

When <strong>the</strong>y're through, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can face <strong>the</strong> situation and<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d ano<strong>the</strong>r goal to<br />

reach."<br />

"I won't say I haven't sh<br />

ed a tear but I learned.to<br />

• carry on. Somedmes people<br />

don't understand that cry<br />

<strong>in</strong>g can be heal<strong>in</strong>g and that<br />

it's better' than lash<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

<strong>in</strong> anger."<br />

Turner's family, her hus<br />

band Bob and son Robbie,<br />

used to her <strong>in</strong>dependent<br />

nature, had many ad<br />

justments to make.<br />

"We really learned to ap<br />

preciate each o<strong>the</strong>r more<br />

and it's nice. They learned<br />

to pull toge<strong>the</strong>r and found<br />

out <strong>the</strong>y could, do a lot of<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs,'* Turner stated. ,<br />

Turner felt that families<br />

need to learn that a han<br />

dicapped person needs to<br />

do th<strong>in</strong>gs for <strong>the</strong>rnselves<br />

and also appreciate <strong>the</strong> ac<br />

complishments.<br />

"Let <strong>the</strong>m do what <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can when <strong>the</strong>y can. If <strong>the</strong>y<br />

want to do it badly enough,<br />

it doesn't take <strong>the</strong>m long to<br />

figure it out~helps keep<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> shape. Keeps<br />

<strong>the</strong>m th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g."<br />

Turner is presently at G.<br />

F. Stfong Rehabilitation<br />

Centre. She'll be <strong>in</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

for her new legs dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

-week and , spend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

weekends at her new home<br />

<strong>in</strong> Maple Ridge with her<br />

family.<br />

When <strong>the</strong>se sessions are<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ished she <strong>in</strong>tends,<br />

naturally, to cont<strong>in</strong>ue with<br />

her <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Scout<br />

and Cub movements.<br />

"There's lots I can do.<br />

This doesn't mean I'm<br />

through with Scout<strong>in</strong>g. I<br />

can help tra<strong>in</strong> leaders. I'm<br />

go<strong>in</strong>g for my ten-year p<strong>in</strong>."<br />

• From page 11<br />

someplace else and come<br />

back and draw ano<strong>the</strong>r two<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es and <strong>the</strong>y are off aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

so it does make a dif<br />

ference.<br />

"It also helps tliem with<br />

<strong>the</strong> basics like colours and<br />

shapes, <strong>the</strong> difference bet<br />

ween small and large. Peole<br />

tend to th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>y just pick<br />

<strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs up but <strong>the</strong>y<br />

need to be told," she add<br />

ed.<br />

"This is where build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

blocks are good. They put<br />

one on top of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

<strong>the</strong>y know <strong>the</strong>y have this<br />

block and this block, but<br />

<strong>the</strong>y may not know that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have two blocks, so<br />

you say, ^ that's nice you<br />

have two blocks <strong>the</strong>re.<br />

When <strong>the</strong>y put on ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

you can say, you've made it<br />

taller,- now <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong><br />

concept of add<strong>in</strong>g more and<br />

it gets taller, or you take<br />

one off and you say it's<br />

shorter. You really have to<br />

do a lot of talk<strong>in</strong>g and hope<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y are at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

where <strong>the</strong>y are ready to ac<br />

cept it." .<br />

Added Poul<strong>in</strong>:<br />

"Someth<strong>in</strong>g I f<strong>in</strong>d excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

is I have a little Japanese<br />

boy <strong>in</strong> my afternoon class<br />

and he does not know very<br />

much English. I f<strong>in</strong>d that is<br />

a real challenge. Everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> children do is excit<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

At this age <strong>the</strong>y may be do<br />

<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> first<br />

time. Like when <strong>the</strong>y heard<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir voice played over <strong>the</strong><br />

tape recorder this morn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for <strong>the</strong> first time. The<strong>in</strong>eyes<br />

get big and <strong>the</strong>y laugh and<br />

it's very reward<strong>in</strong>g. I love it<br />

and it's someth<strong>in</strong>g I'll, do<br />

for a long time."<br />

Reclamadon, from <strong>the</strong><br />

view po<strong>in</strong>t of <strong>the</strong> ecologist,<br />

is <strong>the</strong> most important part<br />

of a m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g operation.<br />

Reclamation should be<br />

important to all of us for if<br />

it is ignored or sloppily<br />

• done it can have disastrous<br />

long-term effects harm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> water we dr<strong>in</strong>k and <strong>the</strong><br />

food we eat.<br />

As Reclamation <strong>in</strong>volves<br />

not only <strong>the</strong> return of <strong>the</strong><br />

land to its former state, but<br />

also <strong>the</strong> foresight to - ex<br />

am<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> possible conse<br />

quences from careless<br />

handl<strong>in</strong>g, we must, as<br />

m<strong>in</strong>ers, take our respon<br />

sibilities regard<strong>in</strong>g reclama<br />

don seriously.<br />

Reclamation, as perta<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>g to placer leases, <strong>in</strong>volves<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spection of designated<br />

placer areas and ascerta<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>g and cod<strong>in</strong>g sensitive<br />

areas.<br />

These areas are color<br />

coded red, green and yellow<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to sensitivity and<br />

it will be discovered that <strong>the</strong><br />

more sensitive <strong>the</strong> are, <strong>the</strong><br />

more str<strong>in</strong>gent <strong>the</strong> laws<br />

govern<strong>in</strong>g such an area.<br />

Sensitivity is composed<br />

of damage that can occur to<br />

a river or stream conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

spawn<strong>in</strong>g beds for trout or<br />

salmon. It also consists of<br />

possible damage to water<br />

used for human consump<br />

tion.<br />

To prevent damage from<br />

happen<strong>in</strong>g, you will, upon<br />

receiv<strong>in</strong>g notification that<br />

your application for a<br />

placer lease has been ac<br />

cepted, beg<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next phase<br />

towards m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g your lease.<br />

You will, after decid<strong>in</strong>g<br />

where and when you will<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> work, fill out a<br />

"Form 1011". This is a<br />

notice of work on a placer<br />

lease form and must be fill<br />

ed out before you may<br />

beg<strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g your lease. It<br />

is also filled out aga<strong>in</strong> at<br />

year-end when you have<br />

completed <strong>the</strong> work on <strong>the</strong><br />

lease.<br />

After send<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> your<br />

Form 1011 you will receive<br />

a work permit and number.<br />

You may not beg<strong>in</strong> work<br />

without it.<br />

You will also be advised<br />

as to your Reclamation<br />

responsibilities for which<br />

you may be called upon to<br />

post a bond show<strong>in</strong>g your<br />

good faith <strong>in</strong> that you will*<br />

reclaim <strong>the</strong> area m<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

when you have f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

your operation.<br />

Bond size depends on<br />

area and water usage and is<br />

returnable, with <strong>in</strong>terest,<br />

when <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spector of m<strong>in</strong>es<br />

is satisfied with your<br />

reclamation program.<br />

In some <strong>in</strong>stances, and<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to cod<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

small-sized operation, bon<br />

d<strong>in</strong>g-may be unnecessary.<br />

An area of half an acre or<br />

less, with a small pump and<br />

m<strong>in</strong>imal-size settl<strong>in</strong>g pond,<br />

may be granted exemption.<br />

The acquisition of a<br />

water permit is your next<br />

step, as you may not use<br />

water from a stream or river<br />

without first apply<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

water rights.<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are three ma<strong>in</strong><br />

categories of water permits<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y are as fpllows:<br />

An approval, allow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

any changes.<strong>in</strong> and about a<br />

stream. This <strong>in</strong>cludes dam<br />

m<strong>in</strong>g and channel<strong>in</strong>g. This<br />

application is forwarded to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Water Rights Branch,<br />

Dept. of Environment,<br />

Water • Resources Branch,<br />

Victoria, B.G. The ap<br />

proval will cost you $20.<br />

You will note on <strong>the</strong> ap<br />

plication that no right of ex<br />

propriation exists under an<br />

approval. Therefore if dif<br />

ficulty is experienced <strong>in</strong> ob<br />

ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g easements it may be<br />

better to apply for a Water<br />

License.<br />

The next form of ap<br />

proval is simply an ap<br />

proval to divert water from<br />

.a stream and is sent to The<br />

Comptroller of Water<br />

Rights. This approval will<br />

cost $50 and is good for a<br />

maximum of six months out<br />

of <strong>the</strong> year. Be sure to state<br />

which six months you re<br />

quire <strong>the</strong> water.<br />

Aga<strong>in</strong> it is po<strong>in</strong>ted out<br />

that no right of expropria<br />

tion exists under an ap<br />

proval so that if difficulty is<br />

experienced <strong>in</strong> obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

easements it may be <strong>in</strong> your<br />

best <strong>in</strong>terest to obta<strong>in</strong> a<br />

Water License.<br />

An application for a<br />

Water License is filed, <strong>in</strong><br />

duplicate, with your local<br />

Water Recorder and is a lit<br />

tle more complicated than<br />

<strong>the</strong> previous approvals.<br />

One copy of <strong>the</strong> applica<br />

tion must also be posted at<br />

<strong>the</strong> site, that is, <strong>in</strong> a con<br />

spicuous place near <strong>the</strong> pro<br />

posed po<strong>in</strong>t of diversion or<br />

dam if any.<br />

Your two copies to <strong>the</strong><br />

Water Recorder must be<br />

submitted with<strong>in</strong> 20 days of<br />

post<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> site. With<strong>in</strong><br />

90 days of post<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> site<br />

you must serve signed<br />

copies on all owners of land<br />

or m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g property that will<br />

be affected physically by'<br />

<strong>the</strong> proposed works or by<br />

<strong>the</strong> operation utilized.<br />

. You must also serve sign<br />

ed copies on all licencees or'<br />

prior applicants whose<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts of diversion are at or<br />

below your proposed po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

of diversion.<br />

It is very important to<br />

follow <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions<br />

given on your application<br />

carefully mak<strong>in</strong>g sure both<br />

sides are completed as well<br />

as submitt<strong>in</strong>g a good sketch<br />

show<strong>in</strong>g your land and <strong>the</strong><br />

po<strong>in</strong>t of diversion. Also be<br />

sure to sign al! copies.<br />

It Is advisable to file your<br />

application with <strong>the</strong> Water<br />

Recorder as soon as possi<br />

ble after post<strong>in</strong>g it on <strong>the</strong><br />

site as <strong>the</strong> date of fil<strong>in</strong>g will,<br />
