Imaging in the summer may require a complex approach to<br />

imaging. Temperatures at night tend to remain fairly high with<br />

an attendant thermal noise, but also tend to fall throughout<br />

the night, making dark-frame subtraction inaccurate. Like<br />

many DSLRs, the EP1 has an on-board noise-reduction<br />

function that performs a dark-frame subtraction with every<br />

exposure. This noise-reduction process is perfect, as each dark<br />

frame is thermally matched and the process is performed<br />

using the RAW format. <strong>The</strong> downside is that each exposure<br />

will take twice as long, making the short summer nights<br />

appears even shorter.<br />

As with all digital cameras designed for terrestrial use, there is<br />

very poor response in the Hα region <strong>of</strong> the spectrum, resulting<br />

in poor nebula-imaging performance. <strong>The</strong> image <strong>of</strong> M27<br />

shows very little red and the nebula is only visible because <strong>of</strong><br />

its strong OIII emission. <strong>The</strong>re are many companies willing to<br />

remove the IR blocking filter from Canon DSLRs and restore<br />

Hα sensitivity for astro imaging. However, I could find nobody<br />

who was willing to operate on the EP1. I turned to Renaud<br />

Landry in Quebec who had performed this modification on<br />

my Canon 20D. I was willing to sacrifice the EPL1 and he<br />

was willing to attempt it.<br />
