The Summit – Hillary’s Enduring Legacy<br />

<strong>On</strong> 29 May 1953 Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay<br />

reached the top of Mount Everest. This year we’re celebrating the<br />

60th anniversary of that historic climb with an intimate exhibition<br />

looking at the ascent and the extraordinary legacy left in Nepal<br />

by Sir Edmund Hillary. Featuring a selection of rarely seen images<br />

and objects from the <strong>Museum</strong>’s collections, the exhibition will<br />

highlight Sir Ed’s philanthropic work for the Himalayan people and<br />

look at the enduring, cross-cultural partnership.<br />

The Bulldog and the<br />

Battlecruiser<br />

In 1913 the battlecruiser HMS New Zealand took a 10-month round-theworld<br />

cruise including two months visiting New Zealand ports. In 2013<br />

<strong>Auckland</strong> War <strong>Museum</strong> and Torpedo Bay Navy <strong>Museum</strong> bring this historic<br />

event alive online in “real-time.”<br />

Join the online travel log on any day to find out where the ship was and<br />

what the day was like. Meet Pelorus Jack the bulldog, ship’s mascot.<br />

Supported by collection objects, images, newspaper accounts, anecdotes<br />

and “breakout” stories we’ll daily build the story of the life and experiences<br />

of the battlecruiser and those who sailed her, and place it all in the wider<br />

context of the times.<br />

The performance is a vibrant and<br />

spine-tingling version of our<br />

most celebrated dance, the world<br />

famous haka. You will then be taken<br />

on a guided tour of our magnificent<br />

<strong>Auckland</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> is open daily from 10AM – 5PM. Children under 15<br />

are free. A $10 donation is appreciated from adults. With proof of address<br />

or My<strong>Museum</strong> card no donation is asked of <strong>Auckland</strong>ers. Charges may<br />

apply for special exhibitions<br />

GETTING HERE<br />

Located on Domain Drive in the<br />

<strong>Auckland</strong> Domain, the <strong>Museum</strong><br />

is a 30-minute walk from town<br />

and a 10-minute drive. The LINK<br />

Bus stops on nearby Parnell Road<br />

every 10 minutes on weekdays and<br />

every 15 minutes on weekends.<br />

The Explorer Bus stops outside<br />

the <strong>Museum</strong> every hour. For<br />

train passengers, the <strong>Museum</strong> is<br />

a 10-minute walk from Grafton<br />

Station (western line) and 15<br />

minutes from Newmarket Station<br />

(western/southern lines).<br />

PARKING<br />

Free parking is available in the<br />

Domain. Secure paid undercover<br />

parking is also available, first<br />

hour free.<br />

COLUMBUS CAFÉ<br />

Columbus Café offers fresh fare,<br />

coffee, tea and has a licence to<br />

LIBRARY<br />

The <strong>Museum</strong> Library is open 10AM<br />

– 5PM Monday – Saturday. Home to<br />

rare and valuable reference material<br />

which is available for the public to<br />

view, the Library was formed in<br />

1867 and has some outstanding<br />

collections relating in particular to<br />

<strong>Auckland</strong>, New Zealand and the<br />

South Pacific.<br />
