The next generation is<br />

to be connected to the<br />
Internet, their phones<br />
and their music, so<br />
features, such as Ford’s<br />
SYNC, are important for the truck market.<br />
We have to emphasize education to<br />
keep up with the changes and the complexity<br />
of new vehicles. In the off-road<br />
market, that means gaining horsepower<br />
and adding aftermarket exhaust while<br />
maintaining ever-more-restrictive emissions<br />
codes. In pickups, it’s fuel economy<br />
and trucks that keep getting lighter.<br />
<strong>SUV</strong>s are featuring more rear-seat entertainment<br />
and smaller sizes yet with three<br />
rows of seats. For retailers, balance is<br />
crucial. You need product on the shelves<br />
to beat the Internet sellers by having<br />
it for the customer right now, but you<br />
can’t overbuy and get stuck with inventory<br />
because the vehicle changed or a<br />
product’s popularity faded. Perhaps the<br />
biggest opportunity is installing items<br />
that the DIYers do not want to do or<br />
can’t do, and the biggest threat is gas<br />
prices going north of $4 per gallon and<br />
how that might affect new-vehicle sales<br />
and the activities of weekend-warrior<br />
auto enthusiasts.<br />
