Osteoporosis is a public health problem affecting
1.4 million Canadians (1 million women and
400,000 men). Menopausal women who don't have
the disease should tal^e 1000 mg bf calcium and
400 units of vitamin D daily For those women with
the disease and elderly, women who can't absorb
enough calcium, the amounts should be ISOOmg of
calcium and 800 units of vitamin D.
About 30% of all prescriptions in Canada are
filled with generic drugs. Generics contain the
same, drug as the brand name drug but are less
expensive. In Canada, we do have safe and
reliable generic drugs.
May is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month. MS
is a chronic progressive disease of the central
nervous system affecting 1 in 1000 Canadians. It starts usually between the
ages of 20 and 40 and affects white women living in northern climates. Those
living in tropical climates have a low risk of getting MS. Worren have a 50%
higher chance of getting the disease than men.
How can you cheat our pharmacy out of sales of non-prescription products
that are some of our biggest "movers'; laxatives? The three magic solutions for
healthy bowels are daily exercise, adequate water consumption and a diet high
in fibre. It's that simple!
But if you do need advice on choosing a laxative, our phamiacists can help!
The CTF says it is not
a "core responsibility of
government to prop up
one NHL team or transfer
revenues between them,"
Who asked them to?
If I want to give a buck
to a sports lottery instead
of spending it on a candy
bar, is' it not the same dollar?
And is it not my right
to spend that dollar any
way I want to? How do
you figure that dollar is a
tax dollar in any way,
shape or form?
Back in January of
2000, when Campbell
would have said just
about anything to become
the premier, he was quoted
in a Liberal press release
as saying:
"Taxpayers shouldn't be
forced to subsidize hockey
players making millions
of dollars a year, while
emergency rooms are
overflowing and students
are without text books in
part because of the scarcity
of government
resources."
Fair enough. But nobody
is being forced to do
anything with this lottery
proposal. If you don't
want to participate, don't
Just for the record,
Milke is quite correct
when he states the average
NHL salary in 1991
was $271,000 U.S.
Today, it is $761,000 U.S.
which works out to $1.2
million Canadian.
Nobody feels sorry
for those guys, including
me. All I'm saying is this
lottery will help save Canadian
teams. If you don't
think that's a worthwhile
cause, cool. That's your
privilege. Don't buy a
ticket and you won't be
What's wrong with
that, Mr. Milke?
It's a coveted minor
hockey award because it
encompasses more than
just what happens on the
ice.
The Fair Play award
is awarded annually to
the Cariboo team deemed
to have performed exceptionally
well both on and
off the ice.
This season, the
Quesnel Keen's Sports
Peewee Thunder, a collection
of 'AA' 12 and 13year-olds,
is the recipient
of the Fair Play award,
voted on by the Cariboo
Minor Hockey Association.
Teams from Williams
Lake, Prince George and
Quesnel are eligible to
compete for the award
Footballers wanted
It's happening in Prince George, but Quesnel players
are welcomed to attend.
A minOr football skills camp is being planed for
Prince George June 8 and 9, and players from as far
away as Dawson Creek are expected to attend.
They'll be trying to catch.the eye of Dave Haynes,
the head coach of the Valley Huskers (Chilliwack) of
the British Columbia Junior Football Association.
Kids between the ages of seven and 18 will be at
the ciamp which is to be held at Lakewood Elementary
Registration and equipment fittings will be required
both days, and newcomers are welcome.
"It's quite an honour
to receive the Fair Play
award because a lot goes
into it," said Keen's team
manager Mike Davis. "It
involves how coaches use
the kids throughout the
year, and also how the
players conduct themselves
off the ice. I know
Dale (head coach Dale
Ferster) and Curt
(assistant coach Curt
Robinson) tried to use
everybody equally and
nobody got special time
on the power play or anything
like that."
Part of the criteria involved
not only the num
ber of penalties assessed
during the season, but
what kind of penalties
they were.
The conduct of the
coaches was also taken
into consideration.
"We made it to the
provincials in Prince Rupert
using the approach
where everybody got
equal ice time and, of
course, we feel we should
have done a little better,"
said Davis. "We came up
a httle short, but that's
hockey. All the teams feel
they could have done better
and we're no different.
But that's hockey. It was
still a very good year for
us."
Games don't necessarily
have to be pitched
on the same day, and kids
can learn about the game
after school
There will also be alternate
There is iio charge for
the tournament, and the
Bad weather halts sub-zero track meet
Competitors had to
battle the elements as well
as each other during the
first track and field meet
of the season.
The first meet was
held, at least partially,
this weekend in Prince
George. It was the aptlydubbed
"Sub-zero Track
Meet."
The meet cOuld not
be completed due to snow
and freezing temperatures,
but several Quesnel
competitors came away
with medals before the
meet was called off.
About 35 Correlieu
Senior Secondary students
went north for the meet,
and four of them earned
double gold medals.
Harley Gilks was first
It's also her passport
The 18-year-old
Quesnel senior at Correlieu
Senior Secondary
School, who modestly admits
to being an honorroll
student, will be off to
the University of Idaho
this fall after accepting a
"I started sending out
Kennelly.
She finished fifth at
the provincial cross-country
last year and placed
15th overall at the nationals,
which is why the
University of Idaho was
Kennelly will pursue
Dunn improves
marathon c]
Sometimes, the numbers
don't lie.
Take the case of
Carla Dunn, for example.
The former Quesnel
cross-country runner took
up running marathons
last year and she has improved
steadily since then.
This week, she was
one of 3480 people
competing in the Vancouver
International Marathon,
and placed 72nd
overall. However, Dunn
was also fifth out of 1504
women and first out of
325 competitors in her
age class.
Dunn's time in Vancouver
was three hours
aud four minutes, seven
minutes better than her
time in the Victoria marathon
last October.
Dunn also had a time
of 3:25 in San Diego in
2001 and finished a training
run in Boston in three
hours and 29 minutes in
Boston last month.
Her next major run
will be in Victoria in October
and Dunn's goal
there will be to break the
three-hour mark.
