“<strong>in</strong>directly form the very basis and authority” for his ethical <strong>in</strong>structions. 20<br />

<strong>Verba</strong> <strong>Christi</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Exegesis</strong><br />

Unfortunately, none <strong>of</strong> the authors consulted for this project (except one) articulate a<br />

methodology for <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Verba</strong> <strong>Christi</strong> <strong>in</strong> the epistles. Lor<strong>in</strong> Cranford’s Exeget<strong>in</strong>g the New<br />

Testament <strong>of</strong>fers three guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> “Appendix E: Guidel<strong>in</strong>es for Exeget<strong>in</strong>g Kle<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Gattungen.” 21 This sem<strong>in</strong>ar member recommends only an addition <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>itial guidel<strong>in</strong>e. It has<br />

been <strong>in</strong>cluded here with the other three to aid the sem<strong>in</strong>ar <strong>in</strong> evaluat<strong>in</strong>g this suggestion.<br />

a. Identify a say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Jesus <strong>in</strong> the epistles us<strong>in</strong>g the follow<strong>in</strong>g criteria: parallels <strong>in</strong><br />

word<strong>in</strong>g, content, mean<strong>in</strong>g, or images.<br />

b. Compare the form <strong>of</strong> the say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the epistolary context with the form <strong>in</strong> the Gospel(s)<br />

if such exists. Look for <strong>in</strong>terpretive alterations that may have been added to the say<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the epistle.<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> synoptic traditions. They rarely cite them as such, apparently because (1)<br />

they know their recipients have already received Jesus-traditions that were deliberately<br />

transmitted separately as a special k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> tradition and because (2) as prophets who<br />

‘have the m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Christ’ and apostles who are conscious <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g his authorized<br />
