This paper has presented an <strong>in</strong>troduction to the role <strong>of</strong> <strong>Verba</strong> <strong>Christi</strong> <strong>in</strong> the letter <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>James</strong>. It has also <strong>of</strong>fered an exegesis <strong>of</strong> <strong>James</strong> 4:<strong>11</strong>-<strong>12</strong> and 5:<strong>12</strong>, which parallel two say<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong><br />
Jesus recorded <strong>in</strong> the Gospels.<br />
The letter <strong>of</strong> <strong>James</strong>, <strong>in</strong> particular, censures the s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> speech. It forbids <strong>Christi</strong>ans to<br />
speak aga<strong>in</strong>st one another. Such evil speak<strong>in</strong>g not only expresses “arrogance and disregard” for<br />
another believer, but it also slights “God’s law and God himself as the one Lawgiver and Judge<br />
<strong>of</strong> all.” 93 In addition, <strong>James</strong> forbids oaths as a means <strong>of</strong> ensur<strong>in</strong>g truth, for “Das Schwören<br />
gefährdet die Wahrhaftigkeit.” 94 May the Lord tame the tongue <strong>of</strong> those who hear and do his<br />
word!<br />
