There’s nothing like the spicy, alcoholic waft from
steaming Christmas puddings to put you in a festive
mood. May’s and Harveys stock great ingredients,
and with one item, it seems you get spiritual sustenance
too. Traditionally, the mash tun of Harvey’s
Christmas Ale gets blessed by clergy! If eight hours
of (pudding related) steaminess in your house is a
bit much, you can buy ready-made puddings and a
host of other good things at the Christmas Farmers’
Market, held on 21 Dec. Order turkeys in advance
– details of both Ersham and Holmansbridge Farms

encourage people to keep Christmas local, Transition
Town Lewes’ food group are producing a leaflet
listing local suppliers. The Nibbler is keeping an
eye out for examples of extra value for your Lewes
Pound, and a pub is leading the way. The Elephant
and Castle are selling half a dozen free-range eggs
for £1.20, or just one Lewes Pound. Beckworth’s
have just started selling cups of fresh, Fairtrade coffee
to take away and have also introduced a sensible
new sandwich system. Another new coffee outlet
in the Cliffe, Moorey’s, should benefit, with all the
other beleaguered traders, from the fact that road
works have gone until the New Year. Hopefully foot
traffic will return in full force. Whilst down there,
take a look at Christmas Hampers both at Bill’s and
the Real Eating Co. And one place the Nibbler has
yet to try, but hears good things about, is the Buttercup
Café in Pastorale Antiques. Expect a review
