THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
Opinion is divided in the Viva office about the joys or otherwise of Christmas shopping. Experience
tells me there’s a gender divide – men prefer the last minute dash, whereas women are
more likely to shop in advance. When I asked my beloved why the men in the long queue outside
Harveys on Christmas Eve didn’t nip in to buy their Christmas beer a couple of weeks before,
he scoffed at me. ‘You’re missing the point,’ he said. Apparently there’s a spirit of brotherhood
in that queue, which is all part of the male Christmas experience. I’m trying to write that
without sniggering. But one thing we all agree on is that if you are going to shop, you should do
it locally. Lewes is a fabulous place for it, so long as you’re on foot. Lots of independent traders,
lots of diversity, and most importantly, plenty of cafes or pubs en route for a reviving cuppa or
a swift half. Our writing team were sent off to have a good rummage in the shops, seeing what
delights could be unearthed amongst Lewes traders. Some were asked to spend only Lewes
Pounds, and all had varying amounts of dosh in their pockets. All manner of things were found,
ranging from footie scarves to sugar mice, even a pretty beaded purse bought by a chap for his
sister. Now doesn’t that warm even the most Scrooge-like of hearts? Bah humbug anyone...?
